Keri Hilson's 'We Need to Talk' marks her return to music after a 15-year absence

Independent18-04-2025

The last time Keri Hilson put out an album, Barack Obama was in the second year of his first term as U.S. president, the iPad was released and Instagram was brand new.
'On some days, I'm like that was just a blink away. But for the most part, yeah, it feels like a long time because I've been waiting. I felt stagnant, I felt stuck for a while, and conflicted,' said the two-time Grammy-nominated artist. 'I'm very much approaching this like I'm starting over because that's how it feels to me. I've lived nine lives since I last released … I'm a whole different person.'
Hilson, the 42-year-old R&B star known for late 2000s hits like 'Knock You Down,' featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo. and 'Pretty Girl Rock,' released 'WE NEED TO TALK: LOVE' on Friday. It's her third album, following 2010's 'No Boys Allowed,' and is the first of a trilogy set for release this year. Led by the sultry single 'Bae,' the nine-track album delves into romance and introspection.
'I feel resolved, both with the art and within about stepping back into the light. So, I think that resolve kind of had to be found before I felt confident enough to release the body of work and also unleash myself to the world again,' explained Hilson, who said she's never stopped recording. 'There were songs in my past that I felt were political moves, songs I didn't really love that I had to sing … I didn't want to feel like that this time around.'
THE DISAPPEARANCE
One of those songs was a leaked remix to her popular 2009 single 'Turnin Me On' featuring Lil Wayne, which peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lyrics included a diss fans perceived to be aimed at Beyoncé.
Hilson, who had yet to drop her introductory album, 'In A Perfect World,' which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 1 on Top R&B albums, claimed that she was forced to sing the lines, 'She can sing / But she need to move it to the left, left,' assumed to reference Beyoncé's 'Irreplaceable.' She says she was threatened her album might not be released if she refused.
Last week, Hilson trended on social media following an interview with iHeartMedia's 'The Breakfast Club' after recalling the incident. While she has talked about it several times in the past, during that interview, the singer publicly named those involved, including producer Polow Da Don who she was signed to. She did not name singer-songwriter Ester Dean. However, after social media users tagged Dean in posts, she later identified herself.
The ending of a decadelong relationship, a lack of control over her career and the intense, never-ending backlash from the BeyHive triggered depression and led to her retreat from music.
THE COMEBACK
During her time away, the Georgia native embarked on a journey of healing that included therapy, journaling and spiritual retreats.
'There were some perspectives that I needed to uncover ... untruths, beliefs that I kind of picked up or inherited about myself,' said Hilson, who shifted to acting.
Her comeback has included very selective press, avoiding what she describes as 'new media' outlets such as social media-driven platforms, saying monetization can reward the promotion of gossip or incentivize the creation of lies. The salacious blog culture of the 2010s was a driving force in fanning the flames of her perceived beef with Beyoncé, who has never publicly commented on the situation.
Hilson 'can definitely operate and navigate within the realm of R&B. She has a fan base,' said Keithan Samuels, founder of the popular website RatedRnB.com. 'Her core fan base has matured … she can navigate within this new era of R&B where there's a lot of diversity and sound.'
THE MUSIC
Crafted with unofficial writing camps and records created throughout the years, 'WE NEED TO TALK: LOVE' finds Hilson delivering vulnerable and flirty lyrics over a wide range of R&B sounds. Writing on all but one song, she avoided current R&B trends that developed during her absence, citing individuality as a key to her early success. She also believes algorithms have created a culture of musical homogeny, rather than creativity.
There are quintessential 'Ms. Keri Baby' songs like the fun, Pop&B styled 'Somethin (Bout U),' but there's also the introspective 'Naked (Love),' and 'Say It,' in which she expresses, 'I won't say I love you / 'til you say you love me.'
'I'm very 'girl boss' in my life, right? When it comes to relationships, I prefer to be a lady. I prefer to be approached. … I prefer for the man to say 'I love you' first. I just prefer for a man to lead,' said Hilson. 'I'm really a damsel – without the distress.'
The bedroom mood is set on the sexy slow jam 'Scream,' while the bright 'Whatever' floats with beautiful stacked harmonies.
'I feel like it's something I would have written for Whitney. And I actually wrote a song for Whitney that she never was able to record,' said Hilson, who began her career as an in-demand writer whose credits include songs for Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. 'This reminds me of a Whitney Houston record, where I think she would be now.'
Samuels of RatedRnB.com says this project is evident of the newfound control Hilson has over her career.
'It's definitely not, to me, an attempt to have this commercial comeback … it feels more personal,' said Samuels. 'The other two albums, I feel like were more catered to what was current then.'
THE FREEDOM
Hilson says she's still open to writing for other artists and giving away songs that may not fit her current musical era. She also has a new Lifetime movie, 'Fame: A Temptations Story,' co-starring Keshia Chanté, premiering April 26 at 8 p.m. EDT. Hilson says acting is now an equal part of her career.
Though Hilson may be cautiously re-emerging musically, fans are welcoming her return. After The Breakfast Club interview, fans flooded her with sympathy and positivity, possibly due to a combination of her finally telling her side of the story in detail, as well as the passing of time. Some fans said they forgot about the incident or were too young to know about it.
'I just control what I can control … I control what I allow to bring me up or down. These are realizations that I've had since I've been away,' said Hilson. 'I feel unburdened … I'm not projecting too much of the past onto now, and all of that is freeing.'

'Matilda cake' launches in Tesco but chocolate fans hesitate over price

A 24-layer sweet treat inspired by Bruce Bogtrotter's cake in the classic children's book and film, Matilda, was launched in Tesco recently, but many fans cannot get past the price Chocolate fans are buzzing after spotting a delicious chocolate cake that resembles the iconic cake from book and film Matilda. We all remember when Bruce Bogtrotter was caught stealing a slice of scary head teacher Miss Trunchbull's chocolate cake - and, as punishment, was forced to chomp through an entire 18-inch cake. The sweet treat has become well-known and many people have tried to recreate their own versions at home. But if you are not a great baker, or simply don't have the time or equipment, brands and bakeries have also recreated their own versions of the famous cake. Leeds-based bakery Baked released a 24-inch layered cake named Bertha in London's Fortnum Mason earlier this year. ‌ And now, Tesco has brought out a 'Matilda cake' that you can pick up in stores nationwide. However, some people are concerned about how much it costs. ‌ Created by Lancashire's Studio Bakery, it is a 24-layer chocolate treat featuring 'scrumptious all-butter sponge made with dark chocolate, layered and covered in luscious chocolate ganache,' according to Tesco's website. It is also said be "fantastic" when served hot, if you warm it up in the microwave for 30-40 seconds. Studio Bakery said: "Our chocolate Matilda cake is a 24-layer love letter to chocolate in all its fudgy, gooey glory. Every slice is hand-cut, hand-finished, and properly decadent, making it perfect for parties, birthdays, or a solo moment of glory with a spoon and zero regrets." The product is said to served 10 people, but many chocolate lovers cannot get past its £16 price tag. It comes after @johns_snackreviews on Instagram shared a post and said: "NEW Matilda Cake by the Studio Bakery! Out now at Tesco for £16!" "16 quid for cake! No ta," commented one. "£16. Is it worth that price?" added another. One other said: "Omg need, but £16?" ‌ Meanwhile, after @newsfoodspotteruk shared a video of the cake online, one commented: "Bruce Bogtrotter is on his way to Tesco." One other insisted it looks "unreal". The product is available online or in Tesco stores. Tesco has been contacted for a comment. In other food news, for everyone who's ever been disappointed by soggy sweet potato fries, a food influencer known as Pinch of Mint has got you covered with a special trick to ensure they come out irresistibly crispy. Plus, Jaffa Cake fans have issued a complaint after spotting a difference in taste of the iconic McVities treats. Will you be rushing to pick up a box of the viral cake? Comment below.

Wynne Evans teary as he says 'I wanted to end my life' over Strictly scandal

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Opera singer Wynne Evans struggled to hold back tears as he opened up about the Strictly Come Dancing scandal that left him feeling suicidal during an emotional interview on This Morning. The 53-year-old Welsh singer has faced a turbulent few months after being dropped by the BBC following an apology saying that he used "inappropriate language" during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. On Wednesday, Wynne emotionally revealed that the "relentless" scandal had pushed him to his lowest point. Wynne said: "I've had clinical depression since 2016, I was diagnosed. I want to talk about it today because I want other people to find strength from that. It took me to the darkest point in my life." (Image: ITV) Choking back tears, he recalled the devastating moment he told his girlfriend, to whom he recently got engaged to: "I remember saying to my girlfriend: 'I have to kill myself, I have to...'" Wynne's voice cracked as he fought to compose himself. He credited his loved ones for their unwavering support during his darkest hour, saying: "I was on the crisis team for a month, and they just looked after me the whole time", reports Wales Online. "My friends, family, and girlfriend had a rota so they could be with me 24 hours a day, sitting up with me because it was just so relentless." Wynne also shared a heart-wrenching conversation with his daughter: "I said to my daughter: 'I'm sorry I brought shame on the family' because even though I didn't do what they said I did, I still brought all these headlines. "She just said: 'Look, dad, I know you, you're just this kind person, and I just want you to know that I can see the video, I've seen it for myself, I know exactly what you said.' They've been utterly brilliant and my girlfriend's been fantastic as well." (Image: BBC) This Morning host, Ben Shephard, also read a statement from the BBC which said: "We provided comprehensive duty of care for Wynne that included support by wellbeing professionals. "He was also provided with direct access to a designated contact at the BBC who was available to assist him at anytime. Plus he has been offered continued support since his contract with the BBC concluded." The interview comes as the Welsh opera singer, known for the insurance advertisements, announced last month that he will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter. Wynne revealed in January that he would be taking some time out from both his radio show and the Strictly tour to prioritise his wellbeing. A spokesperson for the BBC recently said: "Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales, and there are currently no plans to work with him." (Image: ITV) Reflecting on his journey in an emotive post on Instagram last month, he penned: "My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart – thank you. "These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know." He added: "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract, so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. "That show wasn't just work – it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family." Wynne thanked his fans and said he would have an online programme called The Wynne Evans Show, which he called "terrifying". "This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever," he added. (Image: Instagram) "We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again. We have a new home. I'm bringing more presenters soon, and I am sure you'll recognise a few of the faces." He admitted that he was "full of nerves. Full of hope. Full of love. Because when we show up for each other — like we always have — anything is possible." Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called "inappropriate and unacceptable" after The Mail on Sunday reported that Wynne was heard making a remark in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he announced: "I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. "I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. "Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances, and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me." *If you have been affected by this story, you can call the Samaritans for free on 116 123 or visit

'I was in bed with P Diddy when assault video surfaced - here's what he said'

Sean "Diddy" Combs' ex-girlfriend took the stand this week in the rap mogul's sex trafficking trial, testifying about her relationship with the embattled music icon Sean"Diddy" Combs' ex-girlfriend has chillingly recalled how she was in bed with the music mogul when video of his assault of Casandra "Cassie" Ventura surfaced online. Combs, who has been held in jail since his high-profile arrest in September 2024, is currently on trial in New York. The music mogul pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Testifying under the name Jane, she described the atmosphere as "very eerie" upon the release of the notorious 2016 hotel assault video. Jane recounted how she gave Combs "space" while he reportedly scrambled to manage the fallout with his family and associates. "I just remember that they were just trying to come up with some sort of sincere apology post or something regarding the video," Jane disclosed during her testimony. The video, initially reported by CNN, seemingly captures Combs, wearing only a towel, pursuing Ventura towards an elevator at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. The footage suggests Combs then kicked and hit Ventura before hurling an object at her. Following the incident, Combs issued an apology through a now-deleted video. "It's so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life," Combs admitted. "Sometimes you gotta do that. I was f***ed up. I mean I hit rock bottom but I make no excuses. My behaviour on that video is inexcusable." During Combs' ongoing trial, the video has been played repeatedly. Jane expressed her feelings about Combs' subsequent apology, labelling it as "underwhelming". "I felt there was no heart there," she stated in court, voicing her "disappointment" with his public response. Combs faces charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has entered a plea of not guilty. It comes after Diddy and Cassie's former makeup artist, Mylah Morales, took the stand and testified that she saw Cassie with injuries on her face on Grammy weekend in 2010. After a party at Prince's house, Morales and Cassie went to a hotel room. Diddy later came into the room and asked where Cassie was, Morales testified. She said Combs went into the room where Cassie was and closed the door. Morales said she heard yelling and screaming. 'I was just frantic and I didn't know what to do,' Morales said. She added that Cassie was 'distraught' when Combs stormed out. 'She had a swollen eye and a busted lip and knots on her head." She took Cassie to her home to recover for a few days. She revealed a doctor friend checked Cassie over after the incident. When they recommended she got to the hospital, Cassie refused and they did not call the police. Morales said she didn't phone the police because she feared Combs and feared for her life.
