Unless you've been living under a rock, you know Sunrise on the Reaping is quickly becoming one of the most exciting upcoming book adaptations thanks to all the casting reveals across the past month. The movie isn't coming out until 2026, but as we anticipate Haymitch's Hunger Games during the Second Quarter Quell, I figured it might be helpful for the fans to see all the major connections to the original Hunger Games movies to look forward to, since this movie takes place just twenty-four years before Katniss's games.
Let's get into it, but some (definitely not all) SPOILERS are ahead. So, if you want to go into the book or movie completely blind, bookmark this for later.
Haymitch is the central character of this prequel as the movie follows him at the age of 16, when he is reaped for the Second Quarter Quell from District 12. Early in the Sunrise on the Reaping book, we learn a young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada has been cast, and looks a lot like Woody Harrelson) has a girlfriend named Lenore Dove, who will be played by Whitney Peak.
Lenore Dove hasn't been seen in other Hunger Games movies, but she's got a few connections to some familiar characters. Her cousin is Burdock Everdeen, who is Katniss's dad and is speculated to be a second cousin to Lucy Gray Baird from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the female District 12 victor Snow mentored, played by Rachel Zegler. Covey member Tam Amber was also in Ballad and is Lenore's adoptive uncle as well.
After Ballad told the story of Coriolanus Snow at eighteen, Sunrise will feature him once again, this time at the age of 58 and played by Harry Potter's Voldemort actor, Ralph Fiennes. He will be the President at this point, and Haymitch brushes shoulders with him on quite a few occasions after he becomes a tribute.
When they meet in the book, Snow's past with District 12 and the Covey is hinted at in a way that allows the audience to connect the teen and older versions of the character. There are many more details regarding Snow and Snow's relationship that are delved into, but we'll leave it here to avoid the big spoilers of the story.
When we first meet Haymitch in the original Hunger Games movies, he is accompanied by Effie Trinket, who is District 12's escort and advisor from the Capitol. Elle Fanning has been perfectly cast as a younger version after the book features her origins in the game.
Effie's sister, Proserpina, is part of the District 12 prep team during Haymitch's games, and she helps out after the original stylist didn't show up when she needed her. I can't wait to see Effie and Haymitch interact for the first time after Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks played the characters so well.
Following Stanley Tucci's iconic performances as Hunger Games host, Caesar Flickerman, Kieran Culkin has been cast as a younger Caesar. From previous books, we know that Caesar has been the host for around forty years when Katniss met with him, so Sunrise will see him about midway through his career at a time when he has to interview twice the number of tributes. More than anything, Caesar is usually used for comedic effect, so we're curious how Culkin will approach the role.
Philip Seymour Hoffman famously played the role of Plutarch Heavensbee starting in Catching Fire, when he became the Head Gamemaker of the 75th Hunger Games and secretly was a commander of District 13's rebels in the Second Rebellion. As we learn in Sunrise, Plutarch was a cameraman for the Capitol during Haymitch's games, and yes, secretly a rebel. Jesse Plemons is set to play Plutarch this time around, who interacts a lot with Haymitch throughout the storyline.
You may remember Jeffrey Wright in Catching Fire as Beetee Latier during the 75th Hunger Games when he is reaped again. The character is coming back for Sunrise with Kelvin Harrison Jr. taking on the role, and oof, this is a rough one. After Beetee, who hails from District 3, is the winner of the 34th Hunger Games, he also serves as the mentor to Wiress, who ends up being the victor of the 49th Hunger Games.
But, in the Second Quarter Quell, his involvement is because his son Ampert is reaped, and he's assigned to mentor him as punishment for an attempt he made to sabotage the Capitol's communication systems. Imagine having to watch your own son die in the Hunger Games? I'm not ready.
Speaking of Wiress, she is set to be played by Stranger Things' Maya Hawke after Amanda Plummer played her in Catching Fire. Wiress is fresh off of winning the 49th Hunger Games when she is chosen to mentor the District 12 tributes, including Haymitch, of course. Their other mentor is Mags (set to be played by Lili Taylor in Sunrise after Lynn Cohen), the victor of the 11th Hunger Games, who is later reaped during Catching Fire's 75th Hunger Games.
Along with both of Katniss Everdeen's parents being mentioned as residents of District 12 in the book during Haymitch's games, in the epilogue of Sunrise, the Haymitch we know from the original movies is visited by Katniss and Peeta after the events of Mockingjay to give him goose eggs. I have to wonder if Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will briefly reunite to complete Haymitch's story at the end of Sunrise.
Now you're pretty much ready for all the returning characters from the Hunger Games when Sunrise on the Reaping comes out. It's coming to theaters on November 20, 2026.

From Tyler, The Creator to CMAT: Euronews Culture's Songs of the Summer 2025

Why is there no Song of the Summer 2025? This time last year, we had Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso', Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us', and the entirety of Charli XCX's 'Brat'. No such luck in 2025 - with a lot charting songs still being 2024 hits, like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' 'Die With A Smile', Chappell Roan's 'Pink Pony Club' and Kendrick Lamar's 'Luther'. So, where's this year's undeniable, culture dominating, consensus favourite Song of the Summer? The Euronews Culture team got fed up of waiting for a common consent and decided to share their picks for the tracks that should be under consideration for the hit song of the Summer. Here goes... Tyler, The Creator – 'Big Poe' Tyler, The Creator announced his ninth studio album, 'Don't Tap The Glass', on 18 July and released it three days later, making it the Summer surprise we didn't know we so desperately needed. And compared to last year's 'Chromakopia', this is a change of pace. The soul searching of 2024 is replaced by a taut, 28-minute long collection of IDGAF dance bops. There are some great tunes, including 'Don't You Worry Baby', 'I'll Take Care Of You', 'Ring Ring Ring' and 'Sucka Free'. However, for my money, the standout is opener 'Big Poe' - and my pick of the Song of the Summer 2025. It opens with Tyler delivering a set of instructions to the listener: "Number one, body movement - no sitting still / Number two, only speak in glory - leave your baggage at home / Number three, don't tap the glass". The track then transitions to the sample of 'Roked' by Shye Ben Tzur and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, followed up by some glorious Busta Rhymes sampling. And just like that, we're off to the races. Also featuring Pharrell Williams, Tyler's kinetic track has infectious boom bap beat and synth funk to spare, and sets the tone of the album rather perfectly. 'Don't Tap The Glass' may not be an immediate stone cold classic like 'Chromakopia', but its opening track certainly made my Summer of 2025 all about not sitting still and wanting to hit the dancefloor. DM Joé Dwèt Filé & Burna Boy - '4 Kampé II' Raise your hand if you're the kind of person who stops dancing in the middle of the club to google lyrics in the hopes of finding a song's title. Yes, I know that Shazam exists, but I am who I am. This is exactly what I did when I first heard Joé Dwèt Filé's '4 Kampé' in late June. The French-Haitian singer, known for his heavy Afro-Caribbean influences, released the song as a single in October 2024. A cover from a Haitian classic, it quickly found great success and crossed borders through Tik Tok. Even Madonna posted a video of herself dancing to the beat. In March 2025, Joé Dwèt Filé hit even harder by releasing a remix, '4 Kampé II', with Nigerian star Burna Boy. The new version has been played over 25 million times on Spotify. The artists performed the song live during Burna Boy's April concert in the Stade de France, in front of a deliriously hyped crowd. With '4 Kampé II', Joé Dwèt Filé initiates Burna Boy to kompa, a Haitian merengue dance and music genre. The two singers mix French, English and Haitian Creole in this ode to success, ambition and self-confidence. The result is a joyful fusion of Nigerian and Haitian cultures. And trust me when I say that you won't be able to get enough of the song's addictive 'da-da-da"s and jubilant outro. By the end of the summer, you'll hopefully be able to sway your hips like a pro kompa dancer. SM CMAT - 'Take A Sexy Picture Of Me' I first listened to Irish singer-songwriter CMAT's Take A Sexy Picture Of Me while on my way to a party. Strutting through the late afternoon sunshine, touching up my lipstick in a car window reflection, it's the kind of song that floods you with sass. My favourite summer tunes often start this way, playing at just the right moment to capture the season's solitary moments of calm and optimism. This time, it's not just personal. After being released in May, the song's catchy hook "I did the butcher, I did the baker" took off on TikTok, complete with a viral dance routine. If you watch enough of these, it will start to haunt you, then irritate you, like a little chipmunk nibbling away at your temporal lobe. But if you listen to the full song - or even better, watch CMAT's live performances of it - its country-infused glam is an instant mood lifter; a sonic equivalent of slipping off a heavy cardigan and feeling the sun's warmth on your skin. Without a doubt, it should be this year's Song of the Summer. AB Kokoroko - 'Da Du Dah' With the weather in London being especially good this year, I've been spending a lot of the long evenings cycling around the city, exploring, headphones on, music blasting, pretending I'm in a low-budget music video... And lately, the song I keep coming back to is 'Da Du Dah' by the London-based collective Kokoroko, from their newly released album 'Tuff Times Never Last'. The whole project is a delightful mix of Afro-jazz, funk, soul and gospel goodness, but this track in particular has legitimately cast a spell on me. The bassline is one of the funkiest I've heard all year and the joyous horns and catchy vocal lines bounce off each other in a playful call-and-response that alters my brain chemistry in the best possible way. The accompanying music video for the song, directed by the supremely talented Akinola Davies Jr., is equally charming - offering a slice-of-life glimpse of London while imagining the seven-piece band as kids wandering the streets - all shot on gorgeous 35mm film. I can't get the track out of my head. And honestly? I'm more than ok with that. TF Solve the daily Crossword

Selena Gomez Shares Sweet PDA Photo of Herself Kissing Fiance Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez is head over heels for fiancé Benny Blanco — and she isn't afraid to show it. Gomez, 33, took to Instagram on Sunday, August 10, to share a sweet snap of herself kissing Blanco's cheek. The photo was one of several featured in a carousel that captured a wedding the pair attended one night prior. In the photographed PDA moment, Gomez covered her stunning ruby red halter-neck gown with a black coat as she pursed her lipstick-red lips to Blanco, 37. The music producer held one of his fiancée's hands up to his other cheek as he gazed off to the side of the camera. Gomez's carousel drew approval from several of her celebrity friends, including Chrissy Teigen and Joey King, both of whom liked the post. Rachael Ray even left a comment that read, 'Looking fabulous as always,' while musician SZA admitted in the comments section that she'd initially taken Gomez's post caption — 'About last night's wedding' — the wrong way. Selena Gomez Reveals 'Preferred Dessert' for Her Wedding to Benny Blanco and It's an Unusual Choice 'This caption .. I panicked so crazy,' SZA, 35, wrote, suggesting that she'd thought Gomez had spilled photos from her own forthcoming wedding. SZA's funny comment sparked Ray, 56, to reply in agreement, 'Girl you and me both!!' Gomez and Blanco dated for one year before he popped the question in December 2024. While the couple's wedding date has not been publicly revealed, Gomez did offer some details into the big day during a TikTok post shared on July 25. 'Whenever that day comes, I do know I don't want a big cake,' the video, posted by Gomez's beauty brand, Rare Beauty, captured her telling fans. 'I think I'd want a mini one for just us that we can freeze.' Gomez then revealed her dream wedding treat. 'My preferred dessert would be biscuits and gravy. My Nana's biscuits and gravy — that sounds like dessert to me,' she explained. Blanco said in July during an appearance on the 'Therapuss with Jake Shane' podcast that he and Gomez were yet to 'get into' planning their nuptials. 'We're both working on so many things that we haven't even had time to get into it but we're so excited,' he said on the July 10 episode. 'I think this summer, we're going to sit down and be like, 'Ok, what are we doing, hun?' Blanco continued, 'We got engaged and then it's holidays and then we had to start all the promo for our stuff. Then she left to film her show, Only Murders in the Building, and then I met her and we hung out for a week and then it's promo and then I'm writing another book.' The producer noted that when the big day does arrive, he knows it will live up to the pair's expectations. 'It will be chill,' he added on the podcast. 'It will be amazing.' Billy Joel to close Long Island motorcycle shop, auction off collection due to brain disorder diagnosis

Billy Joel is closing his motorcycle shop in Long Island, New York, and auctioning off his personal collection of bikes as he battles a brain disorder. The 76-year-old singer revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which affects his vision, hearing and balance, he said on social media at the time. Joel also canceled all of his tour dates for 2025 and through July 2026. Earlier this week, Joel's representative Claire Mercuri told The Associated Press that the music icon will be shuttering 20th Century Cycles in Oyster Bay in late September and selling his collection at auction later this year due to his medical issue. NPH is a condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. It is most likely to impact people older than 65. Treating the condition involves surgery to implant a shunt to drain excess fluid from the inside of the skull, according to the Cleveland Clinic. In his May statement announcing his diagnosis, Joel noted that the condition had been "exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance." The statement added, "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period." Joel, who grew up in nearby Hicksville, opened 20th Century Cycles in late 2010 as a place to maintain and repair his motorcycles, restore and customize ones he bought and showcase his collection for the public at no charge. "It's basically promoting an aesthetic here," he said in a 2013 YouTube video filmed at the shop. "I like older style. I like the automotive style from the '30s to the '60s. I wanted to collect a whole bunch of those kinds of bikes, put 'em in one place and let people see what that era of bike looked like. Because it's starting to be a lost aesthetic." The "Piano Man" hitmaker said he also wanted to bring foot traffic and business to downtown Oyster Bay — a ritzy waterfront community about 25 miles east of midtown Manhattan — where part of the street that includes 20th Century Cycles was renamed Billy Joel Way in 2023. "I've been living in this community for a long time," Joel said in the video. "I actually grew up not far from here. And I'd like to get a little interest going into the town and the village." Joel's nearby home in Centre Island is listed for $29.9 million, and he has been living in South Florida, while keeping a home in Sag Harbor on Long Island. The shop became a popular stop for motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists. It was home to Joel's collection of more than 75 bikes, which date all the way back to the 1940s and include Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, Ducatis, Moto Guzzis, Indians and BMWs. Joel noted that one of his most valuable bikes was a 1952 Vincent Rapide, which can sell for tens of thousands of dollars and sometimes more, according to auction sites. Joel's enthusiasm for motorcycles dates back decades. In 1982, he was riding a motorcycle on Long Island when he was struck by a car that ran a red light, injuring his left thumb and dislocating his right wrist. He spent about a month in the hospital. The singer has also ridden motorcycles during various benefits for 9/11 first responders, breast cancer and other causes over the years. A date for the auction of his collection has not been set.
