An Indian student looking to study in the United States had discovered their visa process got blocked due to an unexpected reason, not due to academic credentials or financial records, but because of Reddit, as per a report.The student described in a visa-related subreddit how they were denied an F-1 visa after not including their Reddit account on the DS-160 form, which now asks for all social media handles, according to an NDTV report.The Reddit user wrote that, "I had my F-1 visa interview recently. Nevertheless, the officer served a 221(g) form, a notice of temporary refusal, and requested the applicant to make all their social media handles public for re-evaluation, according to the report.The student shared that, "She mentioned that the account was not visible while was an open account, and at the end of the interview, issued me a 221(g) slip requesting that I make all my social media handles public," as quoted in the NDTV report.The larger issue for the candidate was that while their Reddit account was already public, it seemed inaccessible at the time of the interview to the officer, and this stoked concerns about technological issues that could end up resulting in a permanent denial, as per the NDTV report.The user pointed out that, "My concern is that my account seemed private to her while it was already public. The aim, according to the administration, is to enhance screening and verify the identity of the applicant prior to allowing them in, as per the report.The department has also mentioned that the US visa is "a privilege, not a right", and its screening does not stop after a visa has been issued, and authorities may revoke it if anyone breaks the law, as reported by NDTV.The US Embassy had issued a June 23 statement that, "Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to public to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under US law," as quoted in the NDTV report.Despite there being provision for social media vetting for US visa applicants since 2019, the new updates are stricter, with foreign nationals being subjected to an increased level of scrutiny, according to the report. New Delhi: The first quarter of FY26 presents a picture of resilient domestic supply and demand fundamentals and with inflation remaining within the target range and monsoon progress on track, the domestic economy enters the second quarter of FY26 on a relatively firm footing, Finance Ministry's 'Monthly Economic Review for June 2025' said on Monday, adding that the economy has the look and feel of "steady as she goes" as far as the current fiscal (FY26) is concerned. India's macroeconomic fundamentals have remained resilient. Aided by robust domestic demand, fiscal prudence and monetary support, India appears poised to continue as one of the fastest-growing major economies, "with various forecasters, including S&P, ICRA, and the RBI's Survey of Professional Forecasters, projecting GDP growth rates for FY26 in the range of 6.2 per cent and 6.5 per cent", the monthly document emphasised. India's financial markets have demonstrated notable resilience, primarily driven by strong domestic investor participation. This resilience is further underpinned by the robust health of the banking sector, as banks have strengthened their capital and liquidity buffers while improving their asset quality. "Reflecting these improvements, the GNPA ratio and the NNPA ratio of the scheduled commercial banks are at a multi-decade low of 2.3 per cent and 0.5 per cent, respectively, complemented with strong earnings," the report said. India's economic activity in Q1 FY26 was underpinned by strong domestic demand, robust services growth, and encouraging signs from manufacturing and agriculture. Agricultural activity received a significant lift from a favourable southwest monsoon, which arrived early and has so far delivered above-normal rainfall. Fertiliser availability and reservoir levels are more than adequate, suggesting a strong outlook for the kharif sowing and harvest and consequent rural income and demand. "The agriculture sector's steady performance continues to serve as a stabilising pillar for the broader economy and bolsters the rural outlook. According to NABARD's rural sentiment survey, over 74.7 per cent of rural households expect income growth in the coming year, the highest since the survey's inception," the Economic Review noted. It further stated that the Indian economy in mid-2025 presents a picture of cautious optimism. While geopolitical tensions have not elevated further, the global slowdown, particularly in the US (which shrank by 0.5 per cent in Q1 2025), could dampen further demand for Indian exports. Continued uncertainty on the US tariff front may weigh on India's trade performance in the coming quarters. Slow credit growth and private investment appetite may restrict acceleration in economic momentum, the report highlighted. "In the medium term, given the ongoing momentous shifts in global supply chains in the areas of semiconductor chips, rare earths and magnets, India has its task cut out," it added.

US visa update: B1/B2 interview waiver window cut from 48 to 12 months
Come September 2, 2025, the United States will implement new rules narrowing who can skip the in-person visa interview process. The updated policy will mostly affect travellers renewing B1/B2 visas (those issued for business and tourism), the US government said in a press release. Until now, applicants whose visas had expired within the past 48 months could apply for a renewal without attending an interview. That grace period will be reduced to 12 months under the new rules, as per revised guidance from the US Department of State. Current policy till September 1, 2025): From September 2, 2025): The eligibility window is reduced drastically: only those whose previous B1/B2 visa expired within the past 12 months can apply without an interview. What this means: — Fewer people will now qualify for dropbox or waiver processing. — More applicants will be required to appear for in-person interviews at consulates, increasing appointment demand and wait The change will mean many more applicants will now need to schedule in-person appointments at US consulates, potentially straining already stretched visa processing systems in countries like India. Notably, in 2023, over 700,000 B1/B2 (visitor) visa applications were processed for Indians by the US. More face-to-face interviews ahead For applicants used to the 'dropbox' route, this update could be a setback. The dropbox facility allowed people renewing certain visa types to simply submit documents without visiting a consulate. With the new 12-month expiry rule, only a smaller subset of applicants will now qualify. The policy also grants US consular officers the discretion to call any applicant for an interview, regardless of eligibility under the waiver programme. Fewer waivers, more checks The B1/B2 category isn't the only one impacted. Students on F-1 visas and professionals on H-1B will also be asked to appear in person if their previous visa expired over 12 months ago—even if they previously qualified for a waiver. Still, some categories remain eligible for interview waivers, including: Children under 14 Adults over 79 Applicants for diplomatic and official visas such as A-1, A-2, G-1 to G-4, NATO, and TECRO E-1 Applicants renewing diplomatic or official visas Mexican nationals with a Border Crossing Card/Foil, or applicants for B1/B2 visas applying from their country of residence without any past visa refusals or apparent ineligibility, may also be considered for a waiver. New Visa Integrity Fee to be charged Earlier this month, the Trump administration rolled out a new Visa Integrity Fee of $250 (around Rs 21,700). This fee applies to all non-immigrant visa categories and is collected at the time of visa approval—not during application. The Department of State has said the fee applies to most major categories including tourist (B-2), business (B-1), student (F, M), work (H-1B), and exchange visitor (J) visas. 'There are no exemptions for these groups. The fee will be adjusted every year based on inflation,' said a consular note issued to applicants.
