PayPal beats profit targets, flags spending pull forward amid economic uncertainty

By Arasu Kannagi Basil
(Reuters) - PayPal beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter earnings and stuck to its annual profit forecast on Tuesday, even at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs have fueled economic uncertainty.
Executives said PayPal was off to a good start in April, as consumer spending and the labor market proved to be resilient.
Chief Financial Officer Jamie Miller told analysts that U.S. consumer activity accelerated as tariff-related concerns pulled forward some spending, echoing comments from big banks.
Despite a strong start, PayPal maintained its previous annual profit forecast because of "uncertainty in the global macro environment". It sees annual adjusted profit between $4.95 and $5.10 per share.
The forecast embeds some incremental flexibility into the second half of 2025 from economic uncertainty, CFO Miller said.
"Keeping full-year guidance unchanged is encouraging given the uncertain economic backdrop. However, PayPal's challenges remain significant and investors are likely to want to see the pace of growth pick up to stay interested," said Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell.
Since CEO Alex Chriss took the helm in late 2023, PayPal has narrowed its focus and concentrated on high-margin businesses instead of aggressive growth.
"Our strategy is working. This is our fifth consecutive quarter of profitable growth," Chriss said in a statement.
Excluding one-time costs, PayPal earned $1.33 per share in the first quarter, topping analysts' expectations of $1.16, according to estimates compiled by LSEG.
PayPal shares were up 0.4% in early trading.
BRANDED CHECKOUT IN FOCUS
Investor worries around growth in the firm's branded checkout offerings, which include PayPal and Venmo, have heavily pressured the stock.
Additionally, concerns about market share loss due to increasing competition from Big Tech rivals Apple and Alphabet's Google have created a potential overhang.
In February, PayPal unveiled plans to accelerate branded checkout growth to between 8% and 10% by 2027.
PayPal is rolling out a new checkout experience and focusing on monetizing its Venmo app to accelerate branded growth.
In the first quarter, PayPal's branded checkout TPV grew 6% excluding leap day, compared with a 5% rise a year ago.
Evercore analyst Adam Frisch said branded checkout growth was yet to show signs of year-over-year acceleration.
PayPal has also forged lucrative partnerships and introduced new products, including its Fastlane guest checkout feature, to shield its dominant position among payments firms.

Cantor Downgrades Joby Aviation Stock (JOBY) Due to Lack of Near-Term Upside

Cantor Fitzgerald downgraded electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft maker Joby Aviation (JOBY) to Hold from Buy with a price target of $9 due to a lack of near-term upside in the stock. While JOBY stock plunged about 8% on Thursday due to the rating downgrade, it has rallied 26.5% over the past month. As a result, the stock is up 9.1% year-to-date, thanks to a favorable executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and the announcement of new deals. Confident Investing Starts Here: Indeed, the executive order would direct the Transportation Department to develop a program to accelerate eVTOL operations in the U.S., which is expected to benefit players like Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation (ACHR). This comes after Joby Aviation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this month with Abdul Latif Jameel to explore establishing a distribution agreement in Saudi Arabia for the company's electric aircraft. The agreement involves the potential delivery of up to 200 Joby aircraft and related services that are valued at about $1 billion. Cantor Moves to the Sidelines on JOBY Stock Interestingly, Cantor analyst Andres Sheppard admitted that Joby Aviation remains one of the best-positioned companies in the eVTOL sector, given its partnerships with Toyota (TM), Delta Air Lines (DAL), and the U.S. Department of Defense. However, the 4-star analyst finds JOBY stocks' valuation to be stretched, following a 60% rally over the past three months and an almost 90% gain in the past year. 'We don't see current levels as a good entry point for investors,' said Sheppard. The analyst noted that while Joby Aviation has solid liquidity, it also has one of the highest cash burn rates in the sector. In fact, the company ended Q1 2025 with about $1.3 billion in total liquidity, including Toyota's $250 million funding, but expects to spend between $500 million and $540 million in 2025. Additionally, Sheppard cautioned about delays in U.S. certification and doesn't expect Joby Aviation to secure full FAA Type Certification until at least the second half of 2026. Finally, Sheppard pointed out persistent uncertainty around the company's unit economics, such as pricing and deployment costs of its air taxi service. Is Joby Stock a Good Buy? Wall Street has a Moderate Buy consensus rating on Joby Aviation stock based on three Buys, three Holds, and one Sell recommendation. Furthermore, the average JOBY stock price target of $8.86 indicates that the stock is trading close to fair value.

Vietnam parliament approves hiking tax on alcoholic drinks to 90% by 2031

HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam's National Assembly on Saturday approved a proposal to raise the special consumption tax on alcoholic beverages to 90% by 2031 from the current 65%, a move that will add to challenges facing the industry even though the top rate won't be as high as first flagged. Under the legislation, the tax rate on beer and strong liquor will rise to 70% by 2027, a year later than initially proposed, before reaching 90% in 2031. Vietnam currently imposes a 65% tax on these products and the initial proposal last year had the tax rising to as high as 100%. The finance ministry has said the aim of the higher taxes is to curb alcohol consumption. Vietnam is Southeast Asia's second-largest beer market, according to a report by consultancy KPMG in 2024. Vietnam's beer industry, led by Dutch brewer Heineken, Denmark's Carlsberg, and local brewers Sabeco and Habeco, has already faced challenges from stringent drink-driving laws introduced in 2019, which set a zero-alcohol limit for drivers. The country's Beer and Alcoholic Beverage Association chief has said industry revenue has declined for the past three years. In response to weakening demand and the initial proposal for the tax hike, Heineken last year suspended operations at one of its Vietnam breweries. On Saturday, the lawmakers also approved a new levy of eight percent on sugary drinks exceeding 5g/100ml of sugar that will take effect in 2027 and rise to 10% in 2028.
