Fahmi covers relocation costs for Pantai Dalam fire victims
The families will be temporarily housed in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) People's Housing Project (PPR) units.
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, confirmed the approval was secured after discussions with Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and KL Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
'I visited the families involved; there are 14 families currently placed in a temporary relief centre,' he said.
He added that the Federal Territories Minister and KL Mayor swiftly approved the relocation to transit homes.
Contributions from TNB will also assist the affected families, as confirmed by Fahmi's office.
DBKL will subsidise the first six months' rent for the fire victims.
Fahmi assured his office would guide the families on obtaining keys for their new homes.
'Any deposits imposed by DBKL will be covered by me,' he stated.
He expressed hope for the families' resilience as they rebuild their lives.
The fire on Aug 8 destroyed 14 squatter houses and four shop premises, including Mydin Mart and Pasaraya Karnival. - Bernama

'Do not take action on behalf of the police; the police will investigate. Do not take action on behalf of the Attorney General's Chambers; the Attorney General will prosecute. Do not take action on behalf of the judges,' he said at the opening of the programme to promote cultural arts with the Pantai Dalam community, here today. On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that there would be no more warnings or reprimands; instead, strict action would be taken against anyone who incites ethnic, religious, and cultural tensions in the country. Anwar said that the growing harmful elements, from the issue of the death of 13-year-old student, Zara Qairina Mahathir, allegedly due to bullying, and most recently the upside-down display of Jalur Gemilang, must be stopped immediately. Meanwhile, Fahmi said that relevant parties must not take the law into their own hands, urging them to trust the authorities to carry out their duties. Justice for Zara Qairina must not be tied to boycotting Merdeka, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today urged Malaysians not to boycott Merdeka celebrations over the death of schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir. He stressed that the case is already being investigated by police and an inquest has been requested, BH Online reported this afternoon. 'Merdeka is a national event and I encourage us to celebrate it. I too want justice for Zara, I too want justice for Faris, and I too want justice for Syamsul,' he was quoted as saying at a cultural programme in Pantai Dalam today. The death of 13-year-old Zara, a SMKA Tun Mustapha student in Papar, Sabah, after an alleged bullying incident has sparked public outrage nationwide and renewed calls for safer schools. Police in Bukit Aman have since taken over the case. The two other names mentioned by Fahmi refer to a tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman who was found dead in the school toilet in Kok Lanas, Kelantan 12 years ago. Syamsul Haris Shamsudin was a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia student who died during basic army training as a cadet in the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on July 28. 'We don't want bullying to become something that drags on. The laws are there, action is being taken with Bukit Aman now leading the investigation into Zara Qairina's case,' Fahmi was qoted as saying. Her inquest is scheduled to start in Kota Kinabalu tomorrow, her family lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri confirmed today.
