China suspends Argentine poultry imports five months after ban lifted

Reuters9 hours ago
BEIJING, Aug 21 (Reuters) - China has suspended imports for Argentine poultry products from August 20, just five months after lifting a two-year ban.
The notice of suspension, which was posted on a customs website, did not state a reason for the move or how long the suspension might stay in place.
Customs authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Beijing has also banned on poultry and related imports from its largest supplier, Brazil, since May and on imports from Spain this month, with authorities noting bird flu outbreaks in both countries.
The two-year ban on Argentine poultry followed the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the country's commercial poultry.
"This decision may help support the prices of some poultry products as China has restricted imports from some major suppliers," said Pan Chenjun, a senior animal protein analyst at Rabobank in Hong Kong.
"However, its overall impact (on prices) is likely limited due to China's current surplus of poultry meat and the industry's ongoing financial struggles."
China mainly imports poultry products such as chicken feet, chicken wings, and bone-in chicken pieces.
China's poultry meat imports from January to July totalled 226,013 metric tons, down 2% compared to the same period last year, customs data shows.

Oil edges up on stalled Russia-Ukraine peace talks, strong US demand

NEW YORK/LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Oil prices edged up on Thursday as Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for a stalled peace process, and as earlier U.S. data showed signs of strong demand in the top oil consuming nation. Brent crude futures were up 56 cents, or about 0.8%, at $67.40 a barrel at 12:08 p.m. EDT (1608 GMT), having hit a two-week high earlier in the session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 53 cents, or 0.9%, at $63.24 a barrel. Both contracts climbed over 1% in the prior session. The path to peace in Ukraine remained uncertain, turning oil traders cautious after a selloff over the past two weeks on hopes that U.S. President Donald Trump would soon negotiate a diplomatic end to Russia's war with its neighbor. Both Moscow and Kyiv have since blamed each other for stalling the peace process. Russia on Thursday launched a major air attack near Ukraine's border with the European Union, while Ukraine claimed to have hit a Russian oil refinery. "Some geopolitical risk premium is slowly being pumped back into the market," oil trading advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates told clients on Thursday. The uncertainty in the peace talks means that the possibility of tighter sanctions on Russia has resurfaced, said Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates. Oil prices were also supported by a larger-than-expected drawdown from U.S. crude stockpiles in the last week, indicating strong demand. U.S. crude stockpiles fell 6 million barrels in the week ended August 15, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on Wednesday, while analysts had expected a draw of 1.8 million barrels. Investors were also looking to the Jackson Hole economic conference in Wyoming for signals on a possible Fed interest rate cut next month. The annual gathering of central bankers begins on Thursday, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell scheduled to speak on Friday.

Trump's Russian oil conundrum

Russian oil used to flow into Europe. Now, it's going to India and China instead. So, could Donald Trump's latest tariff threat against those countries put a squeeze on Russia's economic pipeline and help bring an end to the war in Ukraine? Despite the warm words and strong handshakes at their Alaskan summit, the Trump White House seems prepared to try new ways to hit Vladimir Putin in the pocket. But has the failure of the Western sanction regime to cripple the Russian economy shown India and China that Trump's trade war bark is worse than his bite? On today's episode, Gareth Barlow speaks to Sky's economics and data editor Ed Conway about how the Russian energy landscape has changed and the potential impact on peace in Ukraine.

Glencore targets 1 million tons of copper in Argentina over coming decade

BUENOS AIRES, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Miner Glencore expects to produce 1 million tons of copper through its projects in Argentina over the next 10 to 15 years, the company's CEO in the Latin American country said on Thursday. Speaking at an event organized by the Council of the Americas, Glencore's Argentina CEO Martin Perez de Solay added that Argentina could supply the global copper market with 2 million tons of copper in 10 years. Glencore earlier this week submitted applications for the government's Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) regarding its El Pachon and Agua Rica copper projects in Argentina. The company has applied to RIGI for a planned combined production of 500,000 metric tons from those projects when they come online, Perez de Solay added, without mentioning a timeframe. Argentina has not produced copper since the closure of the Bajo de la Alumbrera mine in 2018. Peers such as BHP have also announced plans to invest in the South American nation, which mining industry officials have said could become another major copper producer, though neighbors Chile and Peru have long dominated the sector.
