Faisal Halim fired up for Asean debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Winger Faisal Halim is relishing the challenge of leading Selangor at the 2025-2026 Asean Clubs Championship (ACC).
Debutants Selangor are drawn in a daunting Group A with Thailand's defending champions Buriram United and BG Pathum United, Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi, Singapore's Tampines Rovers, and the playoff winners between Brunei's Kasuka FC and the Philippines' Dynamic Herb Cebu.
Faisal, 27, said the ACC experience will be invaluable to both the Selangor team and the players.
"It's a tough grouping, and the teams are strong in our group," he said.
"It will be a new experience for our club after playing in the ACL2 (Asian Champions League 2) last season, and now it's the ACC and ACL2 again.
"This will add value to our team because we're playing with higher-quality teams and players."
The ACC, which runs from August to May, will feature 14 clubs, including Johor Darul Ta'zim, after Indonesia's withdrawal.
JDT are in Group B with True Bangkok United, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh, Lion City Sailors, PKR Svay Rieng, and the winners of the Ezra FC vs Shan United playoff.

Hodak's underdogs Persib ready to bite in AFC showdown

PETALING JAYA: Persib Bandung coach Bojan Hodak has admitted his side will embrace the role of underdogs as they prepare for a challenging AFC Champions League Two campaign following Friday's group draw. The Croatian tactician, who knows South-East Asian football inside out after years of coaching in Malaysia, will see his Persib side matched against some of the region's most ambitious clubs, Selangor from Malaysia, Singapore's Lions City Sailors, and Thailand's Bangkok United. 'It is an interesting group,' said Hodak, reflecting on the draw. 'According to TransferMarkt values, Bangkok, Lions, and Selangor are favourites, but I think anybody can beat anybody in this group.' Hodak, who has squared off against Selangor multiple times during his managerial career in Malaysia, is relishing the battles ahead. For him, the draw represents both familiarity and fresh challenge. 'Bangkok were second in the Thai League, which to me, shows they are a good team, and they have qualified for the Champions League before, so they will be favourites,' noted Hodak. 'Lions have also invested a lot, they kept their core players from last season and they played in the final of the AFC Champions League Two last season. So, a good team, top. 'Selangor, in the last six to seven years, have invested a lot of money to build their squad. They didn't win anything, but they have invested a lot. We will see how good they are.' For Persib, the journey is not about being favourites but about upsetting the odds. Hodak underlined the club's financial discipline and steady growth as key strengths, even if they cannot compete with rivals' spending power. 'Persib are the smallest among the four, so we are coming as underdogs but we can fight and surprise people,' he said. 'We won the league for two consecutive seasons. Lots of our players received huge offers from other clubs. 'Financially, Persib are always stable but they do not overspend. 'We may not be the richest in the country but somehow we are the most consistent.' The clash with Selangor will be especially be intriguing given Hodak had coached several of their current players at different stages of their careers, from club football with KL City and JDT, to the Malaysia Under-19 national team. Adding further spice, Persib's Argentine playmaker Luciano Guaycochea once captained Perak and has plenty of experience facing the Klang Valley sides, while the Red Giants will also meet their former captain Safuwan Baharuddin, now donning Lions City colours on loan.

Selangor down Universities but coach Kinoshi wants more fire

Unstoppable: Selangor's Faisal Halim (right) running past a Malaysian Universities player during the FA Cup match at the Petaling Jaya Stadium yesterday. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Selangor got the result they wanted but it was not the performance their coach expected. The Red Giants beat Malaysian Universities 3-1 in the FA Cup round of 16 first leg at the Petaling Jaya Stadium yesterday, but coach Katsuhito Kinoshi cut a frustrated figure after the final whistle. 'I'm happy with the win, but we need to make huge improvements if we want to progress,' said the Japanese. 'The goal we conceded was unnecessary. We had a plan, but sometimes following the plan is tough.' Kinoshi even shouldered part of the blame after centreback M. Moses Raj's lapse allowed the visitors a late consolation. 'It could have been my decision not to take him off earlier. But this is football – the target is to learn from mistakes as we progress.' Selangor looked slick in the first half and were cruising at the break. Faisal Halim opened the scoring in the fourth minute, finishing off a low cross from Alif Izwan Yuslan. Cape Verde winger Alvin Fortes doubled the lead in the 24th minute after latching onto a neat pass from Afghanistan international Omid Musawi. Faisal then struck again just before half-time, coolly slotting home after a clever assist from Jordanian midfielder Noor Al-Rawabdeh. But after the restart, Selangor were in shambles. They dominated possession yet struggled to penetrate a disciplined Universities defence. The underdogs then had their moment in the 84th minute when winger Aiman Daniel capitalised on Raj's mistake, dispossessing him on the right flank before firing past goalkeeper Samuel Somerville with a composed left-footed finish. For Universities coach Yazli Yahya, that goal was a proud moment for his young squad. 'My players showed character after the first half. I told them football is 90 minutes, anything can happen. Most of them are new, but this is part of the learning process,' said Yazli. Selangor may carry a two-goal advantage into the return leg, but Kinoshi's message was clear – results alone won't be enough if the Red Giants want to chase silverware this season.

Muhammad Faisal Abdul Halim opened the scoring just four minutes into the match with a well-timed finish from Muhmmad Aliff Izwan Yuslan's pass. Alvin Fortes extended Selangor's lead in the 24th minute with a composed finish. Faisal struck again before halftime, putting the Red Giants in firm control. Despite dominating possession in the second half, Selangor struggled to break down MUFT's organised defence. Aiman Danial pulled one back for MUFT in the 82nd minute, denying Selangor a clean sheet. The second leg will be held on Sept 13 at the MBPJ Stadium, where Selangor will aim to secure their quarter-final spot. - Bernama
