Ireka to engage legal counsel on termination of Pan Borneo Sabah highway sub-contract

By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: Ireka Corporation Bhd (Ireka) said it is in the process of engaging legal counsel in response to the proposed mutual termination notice from Gammerlite Sdn Bhd (GSB) relating to a sub-contract for a portion of the Pan Borneo Sabah highway project. The notice was received today from GSB, proposing a mutual termination of the letter of award (LOA) dated Oct 8, 2024 and Oct 11, 2024, where GSB had appointed Ireka's wholly-owned subsidiary, Shoraka Construction Sdn Bhd (SCSB), for road upgrade works from Kampung Lomou Baru to Kampung Toupus. The proposal followed the termination of the Project Operation Agreement (POA) between MTD Construction Sdn Bhd (the main contractor) and GSB, which was terminated on June 30, 2025, due to GSB's failure to secure the required funding by the deadline set out in the POA. Ireka said it has formally communicated its disagreement to GSB, but to date, it has not received a response. 'ICB does not agree to the proposed mutual termination in its current form, as certain scopes of work under the project have already been partially completed by SCSB; and the mutual termination notice does not address settlement terms for the value of work completed or related obligations,' it said in a stock exchange filing. In addition, it said in any event, Ireka said it 'hereby reserves all its rights, interests, and remedies under the LOA and applicable laws against GSB, including but not limited to recovery for work performed and related costs.' 'The financial impact to the group remains indeterminate at this stage, pending the conclusion of settlement discussions. 'The project's contract sum was RM1.07 billion, of which approximately RM10 million has been recognised, with RM1 million in profit based on approximately one per cent physical progress,' it added. Ireka is seeking equitable settlement for work performed and costs incurred, and anticipates legal and administrative expenses in connection with the dispute resolution. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Load shedding to affect over 600,000 households in Sabah, Labuan
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KOTA KINABALU: Load shedding operations will be carried out in Sabah and Labuan from Aug 1 to 7 due to scheduled maintenance work at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal in Kimanis, Papar, which is expected to affect over 600,000 households. Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the maintenance work by Petronas will affect more than 200,000 domestic user accounts in Sabah and Labuan. Yaakob said the process would also cause inconvenience to users in both regions, particularly during peak hours from 10 am to 10 pm, during which each area will face supply disruptions lasting one to two hours on a rotational basis. 'Maintenance works on offshore and onshore platforms will cut off gas supply to two Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Kimanis,' he said when contacted today. He said the two affected IPPs are the Kimanis power plant and the SPRE power plant, resulting in a loss of 195 megawatts of power in the Sabah grid system during the seven-day period. He added that initially, no power disruptions were expected during early discussions with Petronas and the Sabah Energy Commission early this year. 'However, based on information received on Tuesday (July 29), it was found that the power plants are unable to operate using alternative fuel,' he said. He also urged the public to refer to the company's Facebook page and the Sabah Electricity mobile app for more information on the load shedding schedule, including the times, dates and affected areas. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Chamber welcomes event collaboration
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: William and Winceslaus in a group photo while showing the promotional posters for the run. TAWAU: The Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) welcomed the collaboration with Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd to support the upcoming Tropical Rainforest Run 2025, expected to take place this November at the District Hills Park. CCCT Vice President William Tan said the chamber is fully committed to supporting the event, which he believes will help boost the local economy and enhance Tawau's public image. He said CCCT has always been committed to working closely with the government and related agencies to develop the tourism sector and local economic growth. 'Tawau's rich natural landscape and cultural diversity provide a strong foundation for eco-tourism and sports tourism in the district. 'Tawau is not only home to one of the world's rare tropical rainforests, but also known for its warm, friendly and kind-hearted people,' he said. He encouraged the public to support the Tropical Rainforest Run 2025 as an opportunity for every Tawau resident to become an ambassador for the district. Tan said this during a courtesy visit from a delegation from Sri Pelancongan Sabah, led by Senior Manager for Event Operations Winceslaus Gerald Autine. The group also included Event Operations Executive Jacklos Masingkop and Sales & Marketing Manager Pius Lee. Also present were CCCT Treasurer Alex Chua and Committee Member Khor Chung Chung. Meanwhile, Chua urged local business owners to take part in the event by setting up stalls, sponsoring activities, or organising exhibitions during the programme. He believes such events offer an effective platform for branding and corporate visibility, while creating a win-win ecosystem for all stakeholders involved. Sri Pelancongan Sabah expects this year's Tropical Rainforest Run to be held on a larger scale, with higher participation from international runners, thanks to earlier preparations. They also emphasised that the event is not just a sports activity, but also a key platform to showcase Sabah's ecological treasures and cultural richness to a wider audience. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Multi-phase township project set to transform Kunak
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Masidi operates an excavator during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kunak New Township development project on Thursday. KUNAK: The upcoming Kunak New Township project is expected to revitalise the local economy and reshape the industrial landscape of the district in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) strategic plan. State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the multi-phase development, spanning five to 15 years, reflects investor readiness to carry out high-impact projects involving commercial, residential, and light industrial components. He expressed confidence the township would catalyse new economic activities and opportunities in Kunak, helping the area progress as other emerging townships have across Sabah. Speaking after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Masidi said the investors' decision to develop in Kunak demonstrates their commitment to enhancing Sabah's competitiveness. The site's strategic location near the Pan Borneo Highway and Jalan Kunak Spur is also expected to support tourism and attract more visitors to the district, which boasts a variety of natural attractions. The project, covering 107 acres, will include a transit-commercial zone with two-storey shop lots, a hypermarket, hotel, modern bus terminal, and other amenities; a residential zone with 288 terrace homes and 83 housing lots; and an industrial zone with 37 lots for light and medium industries. Masidi added that collaborative support from local leaders, district offices, and investors is crucial to realising Kunak's potential as a strategic development hub on Sabah's east coast. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
