TAWAU: The Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) welcomed the collaboration with Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd to support the upcoming Tropical Rainforest Run 2025, expected to take place this November at the District Hills Park. CCCT Vice President William Tan said the chamber is fully committed to supporting the event, which he believes will help boost the local economy and enhance Tawau's public image. He said CCCT has always been committed to working closely with the government and related agencies to develop the tourism sector and local economic growth. 'Tawau's rich natural landscape and cultural diversity provide a strong foundation for eco-tourism and sports tourism in the district. 'Tawau is not only home to one of the world's rare tropical rainforests, but also known for its warm, friendly and kind-hearted people,' he said. He encouraged the public to support the Tropical Rainforest Run 2025 as an opportunity for every Tawau resident to become an ambassador for the district. Tan said this during a courtesy visit from a delegation from Sri Pelancongan Sabah, led by Senior Manager for Event Operations Winceslaus Gerald Autine. The group also included Event Operations Executive Jacklos Masingkop and Sales & Marketing Manager Pius Lee. Also present were CCCT Treasurer Alex Chua and Committee Member Khor Chung Chung. Meanwhile, Chua urged local business owners to take part in the event by setting up stalls, sponsoring activities, or organising exhibitions during the programme. He believes such events offer an effective platform for branding and corporate visibility, while creating a win-win ecosystem for all stakeholders involved. Sri Pelancongan Sabah expects this year's Tropical Rainforest Run to be held on a larger scale, with higher participation from international runners, thanks to earlier preparations. They also emphasised that the event is not just a sports activity, but also a key platform to showcase Sabah's ecological treasures and cultural richness to a wider audience. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has reaffirmed its leadership role in steering the national palm oil industry towards greater productivity and sustainability, despite increasing global challenges. MPOB Biology and Sustainability Research Division Director, Dr Meilina Ong Abdullah, said issues such as climate change, the need for sustainable farming practices, and intensifying international competition will make the path ahead more demanding for the industry. 'As such, we must constantly think ahead and innovate. MPOB is committed to leading this effort – not only to maintain productivity but to ensure the industry remains responsible to both the environment and society,' she said, when officiating MPOB Open Day held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Lahad Datu MPOB Research Station, recently. Also present were MPOB Finance and Procurement Unit Head Mohd Azhar Abdul Rahim, Lahad Datu MPOB Research Station Head Muhammad Ansri Raydien, and Lahad Datu MPOB Plantation Manager Amirul Ashraf Alias. Dr Meilina said MPOB faced many hurdles since its establishment in 2000, but with continued support from all quarters, it has emerged as the key agency driving the development of Malaysia's palm oil sector. She said MPOB remains focused on ensuring the long-term viability and global competitiveness of Malaysian palm oil through ongoing research, technology development, and direct support to smallholders. On the Open Day celebration, themed 'Palm Oil for All,' Dr Meilina said it served as a platform to connect MPOB with the public. 'This is a valuable opportunity for the community to see firsthand how Mpob operates, what we do, and how our work contributes to everyday life. 'With today's activities and programmes, the public can engage directly with our experts,' she said. She expressed hope that continued cooperation from all stakeholders, including the local community, would support a brighter future for the palm oil industry, Lahad Datu, and the nation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Centralised price system to boost transparency
Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Armizan said the effort aligns with the Government's long-term plan to stabilise the cost of living by tackling the root causes of inflation- not only through subsidies, but by increasing supply chain efficiency and accountability. PENAMPANG: The Government will develop a centralised Price and Supply Repository System to monitor price trends and prevent manipulative practices in the market, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the system, to be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will provide a transparent data platform to detect abnormal price movements and support enforcement action against profiteering and cartel-like behaviour. 'This is a proactive step toward ensuring fairer market practices and greater price transparency across the supply chain, especially for essential goods,' he told reporters after officiating the Seminar Kenegaraan Malaysia Madani: Rancakkan Madani Sabah at ITTC Penampang. According to Armizan, the repository system will consolidate real-time information on pricing, supply volumes, and distribution to assist both consumers and regulators in making informed decisions. 'Through this system, enforcement agencies will be able to act more swiftly and decisively using data-driven evidence. It's a game-changer in combating unethical manipulation and protecting consumer interests,' he said. He added that the system will be developed through inter-ministerial cooperation and partnerships with industry players, including suppliers, retailers, and logistics operators. Armizan said the effort aligns with the Government's long-term plan to stabilise the cost of living by tackling the root causes of inflation- not only through subsidies, but by increasing supply chain efficiency and accountability. 'The repository system is not just a database. It is a tool to break the monopoly of information held by certain parties who manipulate prices for profit,' he said. Enforcement under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Competition Act 2010 will also be strengthened using the data from the repository, which is expected to help uncover price-fixing activities, stock hoarding, and artificial shortages. Armizan emphasised that the initiative reflects the Madani Government's commitment to protecting consumers while creating s healthier market environment that encourages genuine competition. 'This is part of our wider agenda under 13RMP to raise the rakyat's purchasing power and build a resilient domestic economy,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
