Atos reports lower orders and revenue, but confirms outlook for 2025

CNA4 days ago
French IT group Atos reported a decline in its half-year orders and revenue on Friday, hit by subdued commercial activity in France and a challenging market environment, but reaffirmed its sales forecast for the full year.
Atos, which expects to close the deal to sell its Advanced Computing division to the French state in the first half of 2026, has shelved plans to divest its Mission Critical Systems (MCS) business that provides secure military communications, as it aims to benefit from rising defence spending in Europe.
CEO Philippe Salle said on Friday there would "definitely be a lot more orders" for MCS in the future and that discussions with various interested parties were underway but in early stages.
The French state on June 2 formally offered 410 million euros ($469 million) to acquire the Advanced Computing business, which includes its high-performance and quantum computing and AI technologies.
Atos, which unveiled a four-year recovery plan in May, reiterated its revenue forecast of 8.5 billion euros for 2025. It aims to reach 10 billion euros in revenue by 2028.
Its half-year revenue fell to 4 billion euros, from nearly 5 billion a year earlier.
Order intake dropped by around 300 million euros to 3.3 billion, but its book-to-bill ratio improved to 83 per cent from 73 per cent over the same period. A higher ratio indicates greater likelihood of a business covering new orders.
The group said it had streamlined its contract portfolio to limit its exposure to projects with margins below 5 per cent to only three, from seven at the end of 2024.
This narrowed the negative impact on its operating margin to 16 million euros, from 52 million seen in the same period last year.
Atos' net debt rose to 1.68 billion euros as of the end of June. It had a debt of 1.24 billion at the end of last year.

Leidos raises full-year profit forecast on robust demand for weapons

Defense contractor Leidos Holdings raised its full-year adjusted profit forecast on Tuesday, as demand for its technical services and munitions remains robust amid simmering geopolitical tensions. Shares of the company were up 4 per cent in premarket in trading. Rising tensions around the world in the wake of a protracted Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East have boosted the market for arms, benefiting defense contractors. The company has followed peer Northrop Grumman in lifting its 2025 profit forecast. Leidos now expects its annual adjusted profit at between $11.15 and $11.45 per share, compared with its prior forecast of $10.35 to $10.75. However, the Reston, Virginia-based company trimmed its full-year revenue forecast range and now expects it to be between $17 billion and $17.25 billion, from $16.9 billion and $17.3 billion previously. Leidos provides technology services to government agencies as well as commercial clients and is also a maker of drones and aerial defense systems. It also provides services in the areas of health, environmental sciences and transportation. It posted a second-quarter adjusted profit of $3.21 per share. Analysts on average had anticipated a quarterly profit of $2.66 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its revenue rose about 3 per cent to $4.25 billion, edging past estimates of $4.24 billion.

Infineon lifts profit outlook as semiconductor market revives

BERLIN :German chipmaker Infineon slightly raised its full-year profit guidance on Tuesday after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, and said global semiconductor markets had begun to recover despite lingering tariff concerns. It said it was well-placed to take advantage of the increase in semiconductor demand, including from the car sector and AI data centres. Shares fluctuated after the results, rising by 4.2 per cent at 1049 GMT after an early fall of 1.9 per cent. Infineon's segment result margin - its preferred measure of operating profitability - climbed to 18 per cent for the fiscal third quarter ending in June, beating analysts' expectations of 15.8 per cent. The company credited the performance to a faster-than-anticipated rebound in its Green Industrial Power and Power & Sensor Systems divisions, driven by rising demand for energy-efficient technologies and power semiconductors used in data centres. "The semiconductor markets are slowly recovering from the prolonged downturn," said Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck in a conference call. Hanebeck reaffirmed expectations that sales from Infineon's chip business for AI centres would double to around 600 million euros ($692 million) for the fiscal year. In response, Infineon raised its full-year segment result margin guidance to a high-teens percentage, up from the mid-teens range projected earlier, partly due to lower investments. The company revised its capital expenditure forecast for the fiscal year to 2.2 billion euros, down slightly from the previous estimate of 2.3 billion euros. Fourth-quarter revenue, adjusted for currency effects, is expected to rise to 3.9 billion euros, up from 3.7 billion euros in the third quarter. Infineon clarified its previous full-year sales forecast from May of a slight decline from the previous year's 14.96 billion euros and now predicts around 14.6 billion euros. Although the overall revenue trajectory fell short of some expectations, analysts were upbeat. "With tariff uncertainty subsiding, we remain positive on the cyclical and structural growth outlook, and further margin recovery," Janardan Menon of Jefferies said.

Palantir shares jump as soaring AI demand powers forecast upgrade

Palantir Technologies shares rose 5 per cent before the bell on Tuesday, after strong demand for its AI-powered services across governments and commercial businesses prompted an increase in its annual revenue forecast. Investors have been betting big on the data analytics and defense software company's military-grade artificial intelligence tools and services, which have propelled its shares to more than double in value this year, making them the best performer on the S&P 500 index through last close. "Palantir's staggering growth is showing no signs of slowing... and (its) ability to grow at scale has been underestimated by a large cohort of the market," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. The company raised its annual revenue forecast for the second time this year and above Wall Street estimates. Sales to the U.S. government jumped 53 per cent to $426 million, representing more than 42 per cent of the total second-quarter revenue of about $1 billion. Last week, the U.S. Army said it might spend up to $10 billion on Palantir's services over the next decade. The Denver, Colorado-based company, co-founded by Peter Thiel, expects expenses to rise significantly in the third quarter due to seasonal hiring amid rising competition among industry leading tech firms to poach top talent, as businesses rapidly look to adopt AI. The stock trades at over 200 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, compared with AI giant Nvidia's 34.81 and S&P 500's 27.44. Jefferies analysts cautioned that there is a "disconnect between valuation and achievable growth". At least six brokerages raised their price targets on the stock after the results.
