The Hindu Huddle 2025: 'AI will amplify, not replace, human capacity'

The Hindu10-05-2025

Paranoia around rapid advancements in AI is misplaced and technology would only amplify, and not replace human capacity, experts at a panel discussion said. The discussion titled AI for All: Dream of Democratised and Ethical AI was moderated by author Manu Joseph and had Astha Kapoor, Co-founder, Aapti Institute, Kalika Bali, Senior Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research, India and Tanvi Lall, Strategy, People + AI as experts.
To think of AI as an instrument of absolute and malicious power was wrong, said Ms. Bali. 'Technology can amplify human efforts both good and bad. There are questions that we need to manage right now - such as whether the data that is used to train AI is representative of the global majority, how do we ensure that models are aware of the context, how to reduce the risk of biases etc.'

The nature of jobs will change and new jobs will be created, but the new ones also will be redundant soon as technology advances, pointed out Ms. Kapoor. 'The most vulnerable jobs right now are those in the BPO industry. There will new jobs in managing the data is being generated. There will be chaos and is need for regulation, social security, skill development and preparedness,' she said.
Ms. Lall said AI has opened up the opportunity for learning for the curious people. AI and technology can take care of a range of routine work, and humans can turn their attention to creative and critical areas. The experts were of the opinion that in this phase of rapid changes, the human capacity to think critically and make sense of the cognitive overload will be of value.

Iran Has Increased Production Of Near Weapons-Grade Uranium: UN Watchdog

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. The IAEA's report indicates Iran's uranium stockpile enriched to 60% has risen to 408.6 kg, raising concerns amid US-Iran nuclear deal talks. Iranian officials deny imminent agreements, while Trump remains optimistic about a potential deal without conflict. The International Atomic Energy Agency's confidential report reveals that Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels has seen a significant surge. As of May 17, the country amassed 408.6 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, marking an increase of 133.8 kilograms since the agency's last report in February. This development comes at a sensitive time especially with the ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington over a possible nuclear deal. The IAEA Director-General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, has expressed his concerns, stating that Iran is the only non-nuclear weapon state enriching to this level. He urges Tehran to cooperate fully and effectively with the agency. Meanwhile, senior Iranian officials have dismissed speculation about an imminent nuclear deal with the United States, emphasising that any agreement must fully lift sanctions and allow the country's nuclear program to continue. However, Trump said on Friday that he still thinks a deal could be completed in the 'not too distant future.' US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a deal, stating that Iran would rather make a deal than face potential conflict. Trump said, "They don't want to be blown up. They would rather make a deal... That would be a great thing that we could have a deal without bombs being dropped all over the Middle East." Trump has also warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to not carry out preemptive strikes on Iran's nuclear program while the talks are still ongoing.

OPEC+ announces major July output hike as oil prices fall to four-year low

Representative Image Saudi Arabia, Russia, and six other major OPEC+ members announced on Saturday a significant boost in crude oil production for July. The group will add 411,000 barrels per day — the same target previously set for May and June according to a statement. This figure is more than triple the increase the alliance had initially planned. In recent years, the so-called "Voluntary Eight," or V8, within OPEC+ had agreed to daily production cuts totaling 2.2 million barrels in an effort to support oil prices. However, in early 2025, OPEC+ members shifted course, opting for a gradual increase in output and have since accelerated the pace. These actions have driven oil prices down to approximately $60 per barrel — the lowest level seen in four years. OPEC+ "struck three times: (the output target for) May was a warning, June a confirmation and July a warning shot," Rystad Energy analyst Jorge Leon told AFP. "The scale of the production increase reflects more than just internal supply dynamics," he added. "This is a strategic adjustment with geopolitical aims: Saudi Arabia seems to be bowing to Donald Trump's requests." Soon after assuming office, the US President called on Riyadh to raise oil production in a bid to lower prices and, in turn, reduce costs for American drivers at the pump. OPEC+ announces sharp increase in July oil production

Representative image VIENNA: Saudi Arabia, Russia and six other key OPEC+ members announced on Saturday a huge increase in crude production for July. They will produce an additional 411,000 barrels a day -- the same target set for May and then June -- according to a statement, which is more than three times greater than the group had previously planned. In recent years, the group within OPEC+ that is known as the "Voluntary Eight", or V8, had agreed to daily reductions of 2.2 million barrels with the aim of boosting prices. But in early 2025, OPEC+ members decided on the gradual output increase and subsequently began to accelerate the pace. The moves have resulted in oil prices plummeting to around $60 per barrel, the lowest level in four years. OPEC+ "struck three times: (the output target for) May was a warning, June a confirmation and July a warning shot", Rystad Energy analyst Jorge Leon told AFP. "The scale of the production increase reflects more than just internal supply dynamics," he said. "This is a strategic adjustment with geopolitical aims: Saudi Arabia seems to be bowing to Donald Trump's requests." Shortly after taking office, the US president called on Riyadh to ramp up production in order to bring down oil prices, meaning cheaper prices at the pump for American consumers.
