MTN Uganda to spin off fintech unit into separate firm
MTN Uganda
, the East African country's largest telecom firm, plans to split off its
fintech unit
into a separate entity and aims to list it on the local bourse in three to five years, the company said late on Tuesday.
The company, which has a mobile subscriber base of about 21 million, is a unit of South Africa's
MTN Group
and competes mainly with the local unit of India's Bharti Airtel .
MTN Uganda received shareholder nod at an extra-ordinary general meeting held on Tuesday for the proposed separation of its
mobile money
and fintech business, the company said in a statement.
Mobile money is a cell phone-enabled service that allows subscribers to transfer money and make payments for products and services like utility bills, energy purchases, food orders and ride hails. The platform has grown rapidly in Africa, where it is now widely used.
Under the reorganisation, MTN Uganda's mobile money fintech business will be transformed into a separate entity majority owned by MTN Group Fintech Holdings B.V, the fintech arm of MTN Group.
The goal is to "ultimately see the independent fintech business list separately on the
Uganda Securities Exchange
(USE), alongside MTN Uganda, within a three- to five-year period," MTN Uganda Chief Executive Sylvia Mulinge said in the statement.

Indian cloud companies to storm local skies with low-cost advantage
Indian corporates are building muscle to challenge bigger global rivals in the fast-growing cloud market, with offerings that store data applications and related infrastructure within the country, referred to as sovereign cloud . These homegrown firms are underlining lower costs as their biggest advantage against the foreign competitors. Bharti Airtel 's Xtelify, Reliance's JioCloud for SMEs, Tata Communications ' Vayu, and Yotta's Shakti are tailored for local enterprises, especially in public sector and other regulated industries. And they are aiming to take on hyperscalers Microsoft Azure , Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform, positioning themselves as affordable and secure alternatives with cost savings of 30%-50% over the global giants. Hyperscalers are large cloud providers offering massive computing resources and infrastructure. However, factors such as limited technology depth, lack of ecosystem maturity, and high migration costs from the global cloud providers are limiting the ambitious growth plans of the Indian companies, say experts. They added that interoperability between cloud providers is almost non-existent, making migration costly and technically complex. "The emergence of indigenous cloud platforms represents a market response to India's sovereign cloud policy framework, creating domestic alternatives for regulated sectors," said Jitesh Karlekar, director-research at real estate research and advisory firm JLL. "However, these nascent providers will need to rapidly build technical sophistication, security credentials, and operational scale to effectively compete with established global platforms." According to an IDC study, 15-20% of Indian companies are adopters of some sovereign cloud solution for ensuring compliance and security of their core applications and data. "Sovereign cloud is still in the early stages with little adoption in India," said Rajiv Ranjan, associate director, cloud and AI at research firm IDC India. "A key reason for not migrating to sovereign cloud could be higher costs and the risks associated with migrating applications which might be time consuming and cause business disruptions." He added that enterprises in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) space need to be also fully confident with adequate security and compliance norms being met with the domestic offerings. Meanwhile, hyperscalers have rapidly grown their footprint in India through pacts with mobile phone operators. In 2019, Microsoft signed a 10-year deal with telecom market leader Reliance Jio for co-development of affordable cloud-based solutions, particularly targeted towards SMEs and startups. For its free consumer cloud storage, Jio has netted over 35 million active users. A year later, second-ranked telco Bharti Airtel signed a deal with AWS to develop differentiated Airtel Cloud products. It also tied up with Google Cloud the same year to offer G-Suite services such as Gmail, and Google Docs to SMEs. According to a study by policy body Centre for Internet and Digital Economy, India's $8.3 billion cloud market revenue is dominated by international vendors, with Microsoft (27%) and AWS (15%) together having a 42% share, with all other competitors, including Salesforce and SAP, having shares of less than 5% each. In the pure infrastructure space, Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud have a combined 87% market share. Bharti Airtel on Monday launched its sovereign cloud, with its vice chairman, Gopal Vittal, stressing that the telco's offering will lead to cost savings of 30-40% over rivals due to its mix of network and cloud services. However, the Centre for Internet and Digital Economy study on the competitive landscape in the Indian cloud market showed new entrants are struggling to match the free cloud credits and startup support offered by global hyperscalers. The global companies provide large sums in cloud credits and access to accelerator programs, giving them a strong edge in customer acquisition, said industry experts. In contrast, local firms often restrict credits to a small circle of existing clients and face difficulty competing for cloud-native startups. However, Indian providers are attracting small and mid-sized businesses by offering 30-70% cost savings and greater billing transparency, areas where hyperscalers fall short due to complex pricing and poor cost visibility, the study showed. The global rivals with technical strength though are better equipped to forecast and manage cloud costs, offering better expense visibility to their clients, compared with their smaller rivals.

Bharti Airtel Q1 profit rises 43% to ₹5,948 cr, Arpu surges to ₹250
India's second-largest telecommunication services provider Bharti Airtel on Tuesday reported a 43 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) increase in consolidated net profit at ₹5,948 crore for the first quarter of 2025-26 (Q1FY26) while the company's consolidated revenue for the period stood at ₹49,463 crore, up 28.5 per cent Y-o-Y. Net income from Indian operations stood at ₹5,292 crore in the quarter ended June, up from ₹4,183.2 crore in the same period last financial year. Revenues stood at ₹37,584 crore in the June quarter, up from ₹32,484 crore in the same period of FY25. The average revenue per user (Arpu) of the company increased to ₹250, up from ₹211 in the same period a year ago. The Arpu continues to be the highest amongst peers. 'We delivered another quarter of consistent growth, with consolidated revenues at 49,463 crore, growing 3.3 per cent on a sequential basis. Our India revenue, including Passive Infrastructure Services, increased by 2.3 per cent sequentially. Africa reported solid performance with 6.7 per cent growth in constant currency. India Mobile business recorded a sequential growth of 2.9 per cent, driven by continued focus on portfolio premiumisation and an additional day in the quarter,' Bharti Airtel vice-chairman and managing director Gopal Vittal said. During the quarter, the carrier's total customer base across all its markets including Africa crossed the 600 million mark. In India, the telco's customer base rose to 436 million, up from 412 million the year before. 'This is a testament to our passion for connecting customers through sustained investments, and superior customer experience. Our balance sheet continues to demonstrate strength, supported by solid cash-flow generation and disciplined capital allocation,' Vittal said in his statement. The Homes business of the company grew 25.7 per cent Y-o-Y, driven by new customer additions. Meanwhile, the expansion of the company's fixed wireless access (FWA) network resulted in the addition of 939,000 customers. Overall, the Homes business of the company now has 11 million users. On Monday, Bharti Airtel announced its entry into the sovereign cloud offering space with the launch of Airtel Cloud, offering it to other telecom players on a platform-as-a-service model. Apart from the cloud offering, Bharti Airtel has also announced an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software suite for customers, designed to enhance customer experience, reduce churn, and increase Arpu. These measures are seen as Bharti Airtel's attempts to increase revenue for non-core businesses, as Arpu from the leading telecommunication business has remained nearly stagnant despite tariff hikes in the recent quarters. Bharti Airtel, which operates across 17 countries, said that revenue from its India operations for Q1FY26 stood at ₹37,585 crore, up 29 per cent Y-o-Y, driven by improved realisations in the Mobile segment and continued growth momentum in the Home business. The company's customer base saw a growth of 0.7 million customers in the post-paid segment during Q1FY26. The number of smartphone users on Bharti Airtel's network grew by 21.3 million, up 8.2 per cent Y-o-Y, the company said. To augment its service capacities, Bharti Airtel added 1,800 towers and 7,500 mobile broadband stations during the quarter under review. However, capex fell to Rs 7,273 crore in the quarter, from Rs 8,503 crore in the June quarter of FY25, reflecting tapering of the 5G network investments. The Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) segment, which the company launched in Q4FY25, added 0.65 million users over the past six months. Meanwhile, the Digital TV division reported revenues of ₹763 crore, with a customer base of 15.7 million users. Airtel Africa, which is also a key market for the company, reported a 24.9 per cent Y-o-Y increase in net revenue to $1.4 billion in constant currency terms, while net income was $78 million. The number of Airtel Africa users stood at 169 million at the end of Q1FY26.
