MVA members will soon meet on alliance for civic polls: Pawar
Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said he wanted MVA to contest the civic polls together and senior members from his party, along with those from Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Peasants and Workers Party, and other parties, will soon sit together and deliberate on the alliance formula.

Hinting at Sena (UBT) getting a bigger share in Mumbai, Pawar said, "Among the MVA partners, Uddhav Thackeray's party is in a stronger position in Mumbai. Though a decision on the alliance is yet to be made, we will have to consider his party's strength."
He said that after Supreme Court's verdict, civic elections cannot be delayed any further. "Our assumption is that the process for the polls will begin in the next three months.
We wish to go with an the alliance, but no decision has been taken so far," Pawar told reporters in Baramati. Without naming his nephew and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, he criticised the incident where PDCC Bank was kept open in Baramati till 11pm on Wednesday.
The Sharad Pawar-backed panel will take on Neelkantheshwar, Ajit Pawar's panel, in Baramati's Malegaon cooperative sugar factory election on Sunday.
Pawar said, "During Lok Sabha election, the bank was found open till late in the night, and this is the second instance.
Unless instructions are given by those who control the bank, why would bank employees keep it open? It is only during the election phase, and for the second time, that bank employees feel like serving the people till late at night."
While many in the opposition have criticised the state govt for including Hindi as the third language from Std I, NCP (SP) chief tool a cautious stand. He said, "There should not be a compulsion to learn Hindi, but students cannot ignore the language. Nearly 55 to 60% of the country's population speaks Hindi, and there is no issue in learning the language to have better communication. But there should not be any compulsion.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (June 21, 2025) accused the Election Commission of India of "deleting evidence" when it was required to "provide answers" after the poll body instructed its officers to destroy CCTV, webcasting and video footage of the elections after 45 days. "Voter list? Will not give machine-readable format. CCTV footage? Hidden by changing the law. Election photos and videos? Now they will be deleted in 45 days, not 1 year. The one who was supposed to provide answers - is the one deleting the evidence," Mr. Gandhi alleged in a post on X. "It is clear that the match is fixed. And a fixed election is poison for democracy," the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha posted in Hindi. Mr. Gandhi has been demanding voter lists, poll data and video footage from the election commission, alleging irregularities in Maharashtra assembly elections. The Congress leader's reaction came after the poll body instructed its state poll officers to destroy CCTV, webcasting and video footage of the election process after 45 days if the verdict is not challenged in courts within that period, saying it feared the use of its electronic data to create "malicious narratives". In a letter to state Chief Electoral officers on May 30, the EC said it has issued instructions for recording various stages of the election process through multiple recording devices -- photography, videography, CCTV, and webcasting during the election process. While electoral laws do not mandate such recordings, the commission uses them as an internal management tool during various stages of the electoral process. "However, the recent misuse of this content by non-contestants for spreading misinformation and malicious narratives on social media by selective and out-of-context use of such content, which will not lead to any legal outcome, has prompted a review," it said. It has now told its state poll chiefs that the CCTV data, webcasting data and photography of election processes at various stages will be preserved for 45 days. "If no election petition is filed in respect of a particular constituency, then the said data may be destroyed," it instructed. Any person can file an "election petition" challenging the poll verdict in the concerned high court within 45 days.

Shinde has shown 'real Shiv Sena', says Amit Shah; Raut rubbishes claim
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has shown the "real Shiv Sena" to everybody, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said, drawing a sharp reaction from the Shiv Sena (UBT). Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday claimed Shah's remark had rubbed salt into the wounds of Marathi people. Shah made the remark on Friday while acknowledging the presence of Shinde at an event organised by the lobby grouping Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture (MACCIA) here. The Bal Thackeray-founded party split in June 2022 after Shinde rebelled and brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government under Uddhav Thackeray. Since then, the two factions have been engaged in an acrimonious battle to lay claim to the founder's legacy and be called the "real Shiv Sena". "Shinde has shown which is the real Shiv Sena to everybody," Shah said. The remarks come a day after both the Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray factions, now called Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT), respectively, celebrated the undivided party's foundation day. Meanwhile, taking a dig at Shah, Raut said calling Shinde's party the "real Shiv Sena" is akin to saying the Republican Party in the US belongs to Ramdas Athawale. "Everyone knows Amit Shah owns Shinde's party. He says Shinde's outfit is the real Shiv Sena. It is like saying the Republican Party in the US belongs to Ramdas Athawale. US President Donald Trump belongs to the Republican Party, and Athawale, who is a minister in the Modi government, heads the Republican Party of India (A)," the Sena (UBT) MP told reporters. He claimed that despite all efforts, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is standing tall, and this is frustrating the ruling alliance. In polls held in November last year for the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena won in 57 constituencies, while the Sena (UBT) could clinch only 20 seats. In 36 seats, the Shiv Sena candidate defeated Sena (UBT) contestants. The battle of the Senas is bound to get more fierce in the upcoming local body polls across the state, especially in Mumbai, the country's richest civic body, which was a bastion of the undivided Shiv Sena for many decades.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent remarks on the English language, calling it a veiled attempt to deny access to knowledge and empowerment for the underprivileged. In a sharp response posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Poyyamozhi wrote, "English is no longer a colonial relic - it's a global tool of progress. Nations like China, Japan, Korea, Israel and Germany teach it not as some colonial hangover, but to lead in science, tech, and trade." Taking aim at the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS, he added, "Here in India, Amit Shah and the RSS want to paint English as elitist - not because it harms our culture, but because it empowers the poor, Dalits, and backward communities to rise. Like Sanskrit once was, they now want English kept out of reach for the masses. This isn't about language - it's about control." The DMK leader asserted that Tamil Nadu believes in equal access, offering Tamil for identity and English for opportunity - a dual-language approach that he said lifts all children rather than leaving many behind. His statement came in the wake of controversial comments by Amit Shah at a book launch, where the Union Minister said, "In our lifetime, we will see a society in which those speaking English will feel ashamed, that day is not far". He further claimed that Indian culture and identity cannot be understood through "foreign languages". Mr Shah's comments have reignited the ongoing language row between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the BJP at the Centre. While the BJP maintains that the policy only promotes learning additional Indian languages and strengthens the mother tongue, the DMK counters that in practice, only Hindi gets prioritised - particularly pointing to the Kendriya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu, where Tamil teachers are often not appointed 'citing' low enrolment, leading to growing fears of linguistic exclusion.
