Riyadh Areibi, and the accompanying delegation, Al-Batainah explained that the extension was made at the request of the Iraqi side. The new agreement extends the contract for supplying electricity from NEPCO to the General Company for Electricity Transmission in Iraq to feed the Rutba area, for an additional year or until the 400 kV Jordan-Iraq interconnection line is electrified. The current supply contract will now remain valid until September 27, 2025. During the meeting, which was held at NEPCO headquarters, the Jordanian side confirmed its full readiness to electrify the 400 kV interconnection line from the Risha Substation. On their part, the Iraqi delegation expressed expectations that all project-related work on the 400 kV infrastructure on the Iraqi side will be completed within six months from the date of the meeting. Dr. Al-Batainah emphasized that both countries are working towards energizing the Jordan-Iraq power interconnection and commencing supply at 400 kV. This step is considered a precursor to activating synchronous interconnection between the two countries. More than 600 pilgrims were briefly hospitalized with respiratory issues following a chlorine gas leak at a water treatment facility between the Shiite holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, authorities confirmed Sunday. The incident occurred overnight along the road connecting these two central and southern Iraqi cities, a key route for millions of Shiite Muslims expected to gather in Karbala this year for the Arbaeen pilgrimage. Iraq's Health Ministry issued a statement reporting '621 cases of asphyxia have been recorded following a chlorine gas leak in Karbala,' adding that 'all have received the necessary care and left hospital in good health.' Security forces responsible for pilgrim safety identified the source of the leak as 'a chlorine leak from a water station on the Karbala-Najaf road.'

Turkey starts supplying Azerbaijani gas to boost Syria's power output
Turkey has started supplying natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria, where infrastructure was severely damaged after 14 years of war. The annual supply is expected to reach 2 billion cubic meters. Syria's new government, which overthrew the rule of Bashar al-Assad in December, is seeking to rebuild a country where much of the power grid is down for up to 20 hours a day. Speaking at a ceremony attended by Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, and Qatar Fund for Development head Fahd Hamad Hassan al-Sulaiti, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the initiative would help Syria return to normalcy. "In the initial phase, up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas can be exported annually to Syria," Bayraktar said in the Turkish province of Kilis, near the Syrian border. Damascus has announced that the gas will be used to generate electricity. Bayraktar added, "The gas will help operate a power plant with a capacity of about 1,200 megawatts, meeting the needs of approximately five million households and contributing significantly to returning daily life in Syria to normal." "We will transport natural gas to Aleppo, and from Aleppo to Homs. This will enable the power generation plants there to operate in the near future," he continued. In May, an agreement was announced for Turkey to supply its neighbor with natural gas via a cross-border pipeline connecting Turkey's Kilis to Aleppo, with a flow capacity of 6 million cubic meters per day. The first phase of a Qatari plan to finance gas supplies for electricity generation was implemented in March via Jordan, providing 400 megawatts of electricity per day.
