‘I'm not sure about another back-heel!' – Alessia Russo on facing Sweden in quarter-finals and scoring first Euro 2025 goal against Wales

Yahooa day ago
Alessia Russo was delighted to score her first goal of Euro 2025 as England beat Wales 6-1 in another convincing display in St Gallen.
The Arsenal striker was the joint top goalscorer in the Women's Super League last season, but had failed to score in England's first two fixtures in Switzerland, despite assisting three goals in the Lionesses 4-0 victory over the Netherlands.
Russo joined Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones on the scoresheet in St Gallen, as the Lionesses secured a quarter-final with Sweden.
'It feels nice [to get my first goal],' Russo said. 'I want to be scoring as much as I can. It took a bit longer than I would have liked but as much as I can contribute to the team in any possible way, I'll always do.
'I'm really excited, It was a positive result. Again, a big performance was needed. We knew we still needed to win this game to get out of the group and keep progressing. I think our turnaround since the France game has been really exciting.
'Things don't always go how you plan them to. But we knew that we still had a massive chance to get out of this group [after losing to France] and keep progressing in this tournament and that's what we want.
'We want to be here right until the end so the reaction was really important and I think you could see that in the performances against Netherlands and Wales'.
Despite an early scare which saw England lose their first match 2-1 to France, England beat Netherlands and Wales to qualify to the knockout stages.
Sarina Wiegman's side finished second in group D to set up a quarter-final clash with Sweden, who won all of their three games in group C, only conceding one goal.
They go head-to-head in Zurich on Thursday. The last time these two teams met at the Euros, England beat Sweden 4-0 with Russo's incredible backheel goal grabbing the headlines in that 2022 semi-final.
'I'm not sure about [another] backheel,' Russo joked. 'But as long as we win, that's all that matters.
'Sweden are a top side. They've got lots of talented players and they play really well together. We'll have to look into them over the next few days and get ready for a really tough game. It's knockout football – it's all down to one game, so we'll do everything we can to be ready for it.
'We want to go out and keep this momentum going. We know that knockout football is all down to that game and that game in the moment. So, yeah, we'll be ready and we'll do everything we can to win the game.'
Russo also expressed her pride at seeing her best friend Toone perform at her best in Switzerland, after a tough year which saw the Manchester United forward lose her father.
'She's been great,' Russo added. 'She's been working really hard on lots of different things.
'So as a best mate to see someone go on a journey like that, especially after a tough year, it's really nice to see her flourish on the big stage.'

Who will England play in the Euros final and when is it on?

England Women's team have been congratulated by royalty and politicians after they made it to the final of Euro 2025. The Lionesses beat Italy 2-1 in Geneva on Tuesday evening in a nail-biting match that was anyone's game until a late winner in the second half of extra time. England were on the brink of elimination when 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang came off the bench and rescued Sarina Wiegman's side with a second-half stoppage-time equaliser. They were given a penalty in the final minutes of extra time and, though Chloe Kelly's initial attempt was saved, the Arsenal forward made no mistake when she buried the rebound, securing a place in the final. A message from The King to Sarina Wiegman, the mighty @Lionesses and all in their support team, following their success in this evening's Women's Euros semi-final.#WEURO2025 — The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) July 22, 2025 The King and Queen sent the team their 'warmest congratulations', adding: 'Your journey to this stage has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing the skill, determination (and test of nerve!) for which your team is so rightly celebrated. 'Knowing the Lionesses' fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday. 'Your achievements continue to inspire countless girls and women across the nation, proving once again that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible. What a performance, @Lionesses! Into the final and inspiring the nationLet's bring it home. — Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) July 22, 2025 Prime minister Keir Starmer posted on X 'what a performance', adding: 'Into the final and inspiring the nation. Let's bring it home.' All eyes are now on the final, with the Lionesses attempting to do one better than the runner-up spot they reached in 2023. Who are England playing in the Euros final? England's opponents are not yet known as the second semi-final is yet to take place. However, that match – between Germany and Spain – will take place tonight. Should Spain secure victory over Germany, it will set up a re-run of the 2023 Women's World Cup final – where Spain beat the Lionesses, with a 1-0 victory. A Spain-England match would also be a repeat of the men's Euro final in 2024 – when Spain again beat England 2-1. If Germany win their semi-final, it will mean a repeat of the Euro 2022 women's final, which saw the Lionesses win the cup by beating Germany 2-1. When is the Euro 2025 final? The final takes place on Sunday 27 July at St Jakob Park, Basel, Switzerland. Kick-off time will be earlier than the quarter-finals and semi-finals, with the match due to start at 5pm UK time. Coverage for the finals will kick off at 4pm. Where can I watch the final? The final will be broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV1. You will be able to watch both on live TV and through the digital arms of both channels – BBC iPlayer and ITVX. Scottish viewers will also be able to watch live on STV and STV Player. Pubs and bars across the country will also be airing the final, should you wish to cheer on England with a crowd. England's path to the Euro 2025 final The Lionesses got off to a shaky start as they began their title defence in this year's Euros. However, they went from strength to strength and the goals quickly began flowing – seeing some huge winning scorelines. 5 July – Group D: France 2 England 1 Goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore in quick succession in the latter stages of the first half put France on course for a deserved win. Keira Walsh's late strike did not alter the outcome. 9 July – Group D: England 4 Netherlands 0 Lauren James scored twice as England improved and got their campaign up and running. Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone also got on the scoresheet in a commanding display that revived hope of reaching the last eight. 13 July – Group D: England 6 Wales 1 The Lionesses powered into the knockout stages with an emphatic victory that confirmed Wales' elimination. Stanway put them on course with a penalty before Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 4-0 at half-time. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones added to the tally either side of a Hannah Cain consolation. 17 July – Quarter-final: Sweden 2 England 2 (after extra time, won 3-2 on penalties) England survived a nail-biting penalty shoot-out after hauling themselves back from the brink of defeat. Late goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang forced extra time before yet another penalty drama. Just five penalties were scored from 14 taken and Sweden were twice one kick away from victory – but luck was with the Lionesses. 22 July – Semi-final: England 2 Italy 1 (after extra time) England started slowly and were behind at half-time to Barbara Bonansea's thumping finish after a defensive lapse. Agyemang equalised to force extra time and then hit the bar with a superb lob before fellow substitute Chloe Kelly had a penalty saved but followed up to score.

Brighton forward Ferguson joins Roma on loan

Brighton and Ireland forward Evan Ferguson has joined Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan, the clubs announced on Wednesday. Ferguson, 20, burst onto the scene as a teenager, scoring 10 goals for Premier League club Brighton and making his international debut in the 2022/23 season. He scored a hat-trick against Newcastle as an 18-year-old but his career has stalled due to loss of form and injury. In total he has made 80 appearances for Brighton, scoring 17 goals, but has scored just one goal at club level since November 2023. Ferguson spent the second half of the last campaign on loan with West Ham, where he made eight appearances, failing to score a goal. "AS Roma are delighted to announce the signing of Evan Ferguson from Brighton and Hove Albion," said the Serie A club. "Ferguson will join Roma on loan with an option to buy." Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said: "Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues, which hasn't allowed him a run of games. "He is over those injuries and has come back in great shape. Now he really wants to play regularly. This is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football." jw/bsp

🎥 Zinchenko catches new signing napping on Arsenal team bus

A light-hearted moment from Arsenal's pre-season tour has gone viral after Oleksandr Zinchenko posted an Instagram story showing teammate Christian Nørgaard fast asleep amid the chaos on the team bus. Shared by popular Arsenal fan account @afcstuff, the clip shows Nørgaard managing to catch a nap while surrounded by noise, laughter, and the usual hustle of a lively team in transit. Zinchenko cheekily zoomed in on the snoozing midfielder, adding a touch of humour and affection with emojis, capturing what fans have described as a 'school bus vibe' and 'jet lag in Singapore.' The post quickly gained traction, racking up nearly half a million views within hours. Supporters flooded X (formerly Twitter) with playful comments, some joking that Nørgaard is just 'getting used to all the rest he'll get this season,' while others dubbed him 'Unc,' urging everyone to 'let him nap in peace.' One fan suggested the music blaring through the bus was Rihanna, betting that 'Ben White's on the aux,' while another commented that 'Declan Rice must've been a back bencher in school' — referencing Rice's own playful antics caught in the background. Moments like these are a reminder of the camaraderie within the squad as Mikel Arteta's side continues their preparations for the 2025/26 season. With new signings and familiar faces gelling during the tour, fans are enjoying the behind-the-scenes glimpses into team life. It may not have been a tactical masterclass or a highlight-reel goal — but for many supporters, Nørgaard's nap might be one of the most endearing moments of Arsenal's pre-season so far. 📸 Alex Pantling - 2025 Getty Images
