Defending champ Oriental Charm, in pole position, leads the charge in 129th Durban July

Jockey Richard Fourie Jockey Richard Fourie seeks his fourth July trophy, having previously won twice with Justin Snaith's charges such as Legislate (2014) and Do It Again (2019).
Defending champion Oriental Charm will lead the charge from the coveted pole position gate for the 129th running of the Hollywoodbets Gr1 Durban July, boasting a purse of R5 million.
The premier event on South Africa's horse racing calendar is on Saturday, 5 July, at Hollywoodbets Greyville, the race's illustrious home. This year's Durban July promises a vibrant celebration themed 'Marvels of Mzansi,' seamlessly merging cultural festivities with the thrill of racing at
As always, the event anticipates not just fierce competition but also a showcase of South African culture and fashion, drawing crowds eager to indulge in the spectacle.
Oriental Charm is aiming to repeat last year's success under the guidance of young trainer James Crawford. Crawford, who will be saddling his first runners in the Durban July for his own account, is excited about the opportunity and carries immense weight into the race, alongside two strong local contenders, See It Again and Gladatorian, each with hopes of a home victory.
Eight On Eighteen's participation has generated buzz, with debates swirling around whether the young racer would face the formidable Durban July or take the 'more secure' route via the Gr1 Champions Cup later in the season.
Sporting a competitive draw from gate 11, Eight On Eighteen aims to impress not only his owners—Nic Jonsson, a previous winner, and businessman Johann Rupert, who is making his ambitions in horse racing known—but the wider horse racing community.
Should he win, Eight On Eighteen has the potential to break historical odds set by the legendary Sea Cottage in 1967.
With a draw at gate 11 for Eight On Eighteen, the pressure is on, but Fourie's experience may well see him navigate through the pressures that come with such esteemed competition. Fourie's previous wins, all for Snaith, add a layer of exciting history to the upcoming race.
On the other end, former dual SA champion jockey Warren Kennedy returns to ride the horse Confederate, having yet to clinch a Durban July title since his debut in 2004. Meanwhile, the legendary trainer Mike de Kock, aiming for his sixth victory, prepares Immediate Edge, who arrives after a stellar win in the Gr3 Jubilee Stakes.
Candice Bass-Robinson, celebrated for her historic win with Marinaresco in 2017, also has a contender this year, Rainbow Lorikeet, remarkably the only filly in the running. With a competitive draw of 7, she comes with a history that intertwines beautifully with Bass-Robinson's career. Owned by the Yuppie Syndicate, Rainbow Lorikeet adds yet another layer of narrative to the rich tapestry of this year's race.
As the date approaches, fans and participants alike prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable event—a celebration of sport, culture, and community pride, encapsulated on the hallowed turf of Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Keshav Maharaj ‘relieved to tick the box' after picking up first ODI five-for

Maharaj took 5/33, delivering a superb spell of spin bowling for the Proteas in the series opener against Australia. Nine years after making his international debut in Australia, spin bowler Keshav Maharaj felt he had come full circle after securing career-best ODI figures on Tuesday, leading South Africa to a crushing 98-run victory over Australia in Cairns. Maharaj, who played his first Test against Australia in Perth in November 2016, has since earned five-wicket and 10-wicket hauls in the longest format. His return of 5/33 on Tuesday, however, was his maiden 'five-for' in the ODI format. The experienced spinner produced a remarkable spell to take the match away from Australia, who were bowled out for 198 runs in the 41st over of their innings. This after the Proteas top order had combined well, with Aiden Markram (82 off 81), captain Temba Bavuma (65 off 74) and Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56) all contributing half-centuries as the SA team compiled 296/8 in their 50 overs. 'To see it come together is super special. I was very fortunate to get the rewards. I put the balls in the right area, but it's not often that happens (taking five wickets), so I'm very grateful and I'll take that performance,' said Maharaj, who was named Man of the Match. 'It (Australia) is the place where I came to debut, so it's a wonderful, sort of fitting and nostalgic feeling coming back here and getting my first fifer.' Still going strong Maharaj admitted he was relieved to finally achieve the milestone in his 49th ODI, with his performance indicating he was still improving at the age of 35. 'I'm not someone who bowls for five-fors. I'm a process driven person, so I judge myself on my consistency and my lengths,' he said. 'I think it was more of a sigh of relief to finally tick the box. You dream of playing international cricket, you dream of putting in match-winning performances, and the dreams keep building. 'To tick the box of getting a fifer will always be special but it's probably more a feeling of relief than anything else.' With South Africa having taken a 1-0 series lead, the second of three ODI matches will be contested in Mackay on Friday.

Destructive spinner Maharaj leads Proteas to crushing win over Australia

Playing his 49th ODI, Maharaj returned career-best figures of 5/33. An incredible spell by spin bowler Keshav Maharaj snatched the game away from Australia on Tuesday, as the Proteas secured a commanding 98-run victory in the first fixture of their three-match ODI series in Cairns. Set a target of 297 runs to win, Australia got off to a decent start in their chase, with Travis Head and captain Mitchell Marsh sharing 60 runs for the first wicket. However, Head was removed for 27 runs in the eighth over, stumped by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton as spinner Prenelan Subrayen took his first ODI wicket on debut. And once the partnership was broken, experienced slow bowler Maharaj ripped through the rest of Australia's top order, with the hosts losing their next five wickets for just 26 runs as they were left scrambling at 89/6. Marsh stuck his heels in at the crease, sharing 71 runs with Ben Dwarshuis (33 off 52) for the seventh wicket before Dwarshuis was removed by Nandre Burger, with Dewald Brevis holding onto the catch at midwicket. That scalp signalled the beginning of the end for the hosts as Marsh (who hit 88 off 96) fell four overs later, and Australia were ultimately bowled out for 198 runs in the 41st over of their innings. Playing his 49th ODI, Maharaj returned career-best figures of 5/33, taking his maiden five-wicket haul in the 50-over format at international level. Proteas innings Earlier, after being sent in to bat, South Africa were well anchored, ultimately reaching 296/8 in their innings. The top order combined well, with Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton combing in a 91-run stand for the first wicket. After Rickelton fell for 33 runs in the 17th over, Markram (82 off 81), captain Temba Bavuma (65 off 74) and Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56) all contributed half-centuries, laying the foundation of an impressive all-round performance by the SA team. Spinner Travis Head, who took 4/57, was the best of Australia's bowlers. With South Africa having taken a 1-0 series lead, the second of three ODI matches will be contested in Mackay on Friday.

Markram top scores in first ODI, but Rabada misses series with injury

After missing out in the T20 series, he used the extra time afforded him in the 50-over format to build an innings, while still scoring at a strike of more than 100. He struck nine lovely fours, and shared an opening partnership of 92 with Ryan Rickelton, who as in the three T20s, looked scratchy in making 33, needing 43 deliveries to do so. Markram's frustration at getting out for 82 — edging a wide delivery from Ben Dwarhuis to Josh Inglis — was understandable given how controlled he looked and it was ultimately one of the primary reasons behind SA failing to reach 300. 'I wanted heaps more,' Markram said in an interview during the innings break. 'I was finally starting to find my rhythm and then got out.' Playing his first match since the World Test Championship final, Bavuma understandably struggled with his timing initially and with Markram's dismissal, was also cautious at the start of his partnership with Breetzke. With Klaasen and Miller absent, the next few series will be important for Breetzke, to establish himself in the ODI side. After making a hundred on debut in Pakistan and 83 in his second match, Tuesday's 57 off 56 balls, that included one of just three sixes in the SA innings, was another tick next to his name. Breetzke's partnership of 92 with Bavuma, provided the foundation for a late innings surge, but that didn't materialise in the manner SA has managed in the last few years. Bavuma hit five fours in his innings of 65, which came off 74 balls and will be pleased with his first outing since Lord's, a period in which he also recovered from a hamstring injury. Markram mentioned that the pitch was slow, which made shot-making hard, while the new ODI rule, which allows the bowling team choose one of the two balls they started the match with after 34 overs to complete the innings, also appeared to give the Australians more control.
