Race-by-race tips and previews for Friday's Lismore meeting

Selections based on a heavy track Race 1 3. Shore To Happen resumed from a spell with a midfield effort at Beaudesert when only beaten by 1.3 lengths. She was an easy winner at Ipswich in March and only needs to run up to that and handle the heavy track to be hard to hold out here. 2. Miss Uchitel has been midfield in two starts since a resuming third at the Sunshine Coast. She should be thereabouts in this company. 1. Our Silver Linings has a big weight to contend with but has the benefit of an apprentice allowance. She wasn't beaten far when resuming for the new stable. 5. A Notion ran second at Port Macquarie after leading last time out and can give some cheek again. How to play it: Shore To Happen WIN. Race 2 1. Barron has had plenty of chances but has been racing well with placings in each of his four starts since resuming from a spell. He gets another chance to break through here at start 34. 6. Hayley's Rocket was close-up when fifth at Grafton on debut. She ran well in a trial before that and looms as the main danger. 5. Aamira is on debut and has had a stable change after a number of jumpouts and a trial. 12. Tosmia resumed from a spell with a last placing at Eagle Farm and will find this easier. How to play it: Barron WIN. Race 3 2. Torque Ti Amo was resuming from a spell when hitting the line well for a second behind Gaylord at Grafton at just his second start. He should have derived benefit from that hitout and can go one better in this. 1. Hezanuff ran well at Grafton before failing at Coffs Harbour last time out. An improvement is on the cards. 6. Beautiful Jo has been midfield in two runs since being spelled and can get into the placings. 5. Australasia was a last start third at the Gold Coast and has claims on that performance. How to play it: Torque Ti Amo WIN. Race 4 4. Let's Do It Again was midfield at the Gold Coast on debut and then showed improvement when a last start third at the Sunshine Coast. He has upside and can break through in this. 7. National Goal was down the track at Murwillumbah when last produced but has since been close-up in a Gold Coast trial. 3. Kemal has been midfield in his latest two starts and this looks a nice race for him to improve in. 1. Andros was placed at Murwillumbah last time out and can get into the placings again on the strength of that effort. How to play it: Let's Do It Again WIN.

From humble beginnings to Africa's biggest race

An early postcard of Durban's Greyville Race Course, with sheep grazing in the foreground. Image: File The postcard of old Durban this week suitably shows the very early days of Durban's Greyville Race Course, the scene of the Durban July race today. The modern picture shows what a major event the Durban July has become - a far cry from it's first attendance of 3 000 people. The history of Greyville dates as far back as 1844, when it hosted the province's first official horse racing event. The 2 800m pear-shaped course surrounds the Royal Durban Golf Club's championship course. The Hollywoodbets Durban July run at Greyville Racecourse is internationally acknowledged as Africa's greatest horseracing event. It has been run without interruption every year since Saturday, July 17, 1897 when Campanajo crossed the line first from among seven runners in the Durban Turf Club Handicap over 1600m on the Western Vlei. The initial distance of 1 mile (1600m) was modified several times until 1970 when it was changed to its current 2200 meters. About 3 000 people attended that first day. Today a crowd of 50 000 plus is the norm. The much developed scene today Image: Leon Lestrade / Independent newspapers The most famous of the July's historic winners is no doubt the great Sea Cottage. The horse fell prey to a sniper's bullet on his way to an early morning training session just a few weeks ahead of 1966 July. With the bullet lodged in his hind quarter, Sea Cottage ran the race of his life to finish fourth behind winning stable mate Java Head. A year later Sea Cottage came back to dead-heat with Jollify, to whom he was conceding an astonishing 12 kgs. Only six horses have ever won the July twice, the most recent being the Justin Snaith-trained Do It Again in 2018 and 2019. Prior to that, the Geoff Woodruff inmate, El Picha, became the first horse in 50 years to achieve the double when winning in 1999 and 2000. The very talented London News won the 100th running of the 'July', before embarking on an ambitious International campaign which saw Alec Laird's charge capture the QE 11 Cup at Shatin Racecourse in Hong Kong. Fillies and Mares have found the winners' enclosure on just 13 occasions over the 124-year history of the race. This century, the fairer sex have been represented by Ipi Tombe (2002), Dancer's Daughter (2008) and Igugu (2011). Anton Marcus leads the way as far as the jockeys are concerned with five victories to his name. Bertie Hayden and Felix Coetzee rode three winners each while Richard Fourie also has three winners to his name.

Defending champ Oriental Charm, in pole position, leads the charge in 129th Durban July

Jockey Richard Fourie Jockey Richard Fourie seeks his fourth July trophy, having previously won twice with Justin Snaith's charges such as Legislate (2014) and Do It Again (2019). Defending champion Oriental Charm will lead the charge from the coveted pole position gate for the 129th running of the Hollywoodbets Gr1 Durban July, boasting a purse of R5 million. The premier event on South Africa's horse racing calendar is on Saturday, 5 July, at Hollywoodbets Greyville, the race's illustrious home. This year's Durban July promises a vibrant celebration themed 'Marvels of Mzansi,' seamlessly merging cultural festivities with the thrill of racing at As always, the event anticipates not just fierce competition but also a showcase of South African culture and fashion, drawing crowds eager to indulge in the spectacle. Oriental Charm is aiming to repeat last year's success under the guidance of young trainer James Crawford. Crawford, who will be saddling his first runners in the Durban July for his own account, is excited about the opportunity and carries immense weight into the race, alongside two strong local contenders, See It Again and Gladatorian, each with hopes of a home victory. Eight On Eighteen's participation has generated buzz, with debates swirling around whether the young racer would face the formidable Durban July or take the 'more secure' route via the Gr1 Champions Cup later in the season. Sporting a competitive draw from gate 11, Eight On Eighteen aims to impress not only his owners—Nic Jonsson, a previous winner, and businessman Johann Rupert, who is making his ambitions in horse racing known—but the wider horse racing community. Should he win, Eight On Eighteen has the potential to break historical odds set by the legendary Sea Cottage in 1967. With a draw at gate 11 for Eight On Eighteen, the pressure is on, but Fourie's experience may well see him navigate through the pressures that come with such esteemed competition. Fourie's previous wins, all for Snaith, add a layer of exciting history to the upcoming race. On the other end, former dual SA champion jockey Warren Kennedy returns to ride the horse Confederate, having yet to clinch a Durban July title since his debut in 2004. Meanwhile, the legendary trainer Mike de Kock, aiming for his sixth victory, prepares Immediate Edge, who arrives after a stellar win in the Gr3 Jubilee Stakes. Candice Bass-Robinson, celebrated for her historic win with Marinaresco in 2017, also has a contender this year, Rainbow Lorikeet, remarkably the only filly in the running. With a competitive draw of 7, she comes with a history that intertwines beautifully with Bass-Robinson's career. Owned by the Yuppie Syndicate, Rainbow Lorikeet adds yet another layer of narrative to the rich tapestry of this year's race. As the date approaches, fans and participants alike prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable event—a celebration of sport, culture, and community pride, encapsulated on the hallowed turf of Hollywoodbets Greyville.
