Jordan says to host Syria-US meeting on reconstruction - Region
The meeting on Tuesday, which will be attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and US special envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack, "will discuss the situation in Syria and ways to support the process of rebuilding Syria on foundations that guarantee its security, stability and sovereignty", according to a statement.
It will be a continuation of discussions held between the officials in Amman on July 19 about deadly clashes in the Druze-majority Syrian province of Sweida.
Responding to the announcement of the meeting, Barrack expressed in a post on X "our collective determination to move toward a future in which Syria and all of its people can live in peace, security, and prosperity".
The violence between Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouins in July ultimately drew the intervention of government forces and tribal fighters who came to support the Bedouins, as well as the Israeli military, which carried out strikes in support of the Druze.
A ceasefire put an end to the week of bloodshed -- which killed 1,400 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights -- but the situation remained tense, flaring into violence again in August.
Syria's minority communities have expressed concerns for their safety since December, when an Islamist-led offensive toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, who had presented himself as a protector of minorities.
While the new Syrian authorities have repeatedly stated their intent to protect all of the country's ethnic and religious groups, the killing of more than 1,700 mostly Alawite civilians along the coast in March and the violence in Sweida have raised doubts about their ability to manage sectarian tensions.

US, Jordan offer Syria support in upholding Sweida ceasefire - Region
Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers and a US envoy agreed on Tuesday to form a working group to help Damascus uphold a ceasefire in Sweida province, rocked by recent sectarian clashes. The king also said Jordan was ready "to share its expertise in all fields to help develop and strengthen the capabilities of Syrian institutions" and "noted the need to step up Jordanian-Syrian cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism and preventing arms and drug smuggling", the statement added. Spain evacuates 44 wounded or ill children from Gaza - War on Gaza
Spain has evacuated 44 wounded or ill children from war-torn Gaza along with about 100 of their relatives over the past several months, the government said Tuesday. Four separate evacuation missions were carried out in coordination with international organisations and allied nations, Spain's migration ministry, which led the operations, said in a statement. The children and their families have been relocated across Spain to receive medical treatment, it added. Those brought to Spain will be eligible to apply for asylum. Syria, Kurdish officials meet after Paris talks canned - Region
Syria's foreign minister and a senior official in the country's Kurdish administration have met in Damascus, sources from both sides told AFP on Tuesday, days after the government boycotted talks in France. Damascus had said it would not participate in the Paris talks after the Kurds hosted a meeting last week involving Syria's Druze and Alawite minority communities, which have been subjected to sectarian violence in recent months. The event called for a decentralised state -- a move repeatedly rejected by Syria's new authorities -- and was effectively the first meeting to bring together representatives of several communities opposed to the approach and vision of governance of Syria's new authorities. Elham Ahmad, a senior official in the Kurdish administration in Syria's northeast, met Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani "on Monday evening upon the request of the Damascus government", a Kurdish official told AFP, requesting anonymity. A Syrian government source, also requesting anonymity, confirmed to AFP that the Damascus meeting took place, without providing further details. The Kurds and Damascus have been holding talks on the implementation of a March 10 deal between Mazloum Abdi, head of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and President Ahmed al-Sharaa on integrating the Kurds' semi-autonomous civil and military institutions into the state. Implementation has been held up by differences between the two parties. Monday's talks sought to affirm "the continuation of the negotiating process via intra-Syrian committees under international supervision", the Kurdish official said, adding that the sides agreed "there was no place for a military option". "Discussions focused on finding an appropriate formula for decentralisation, without specifying a timeframe," the Kurdish official added. Late last month, Syria, France and the United States said they agreed to convene talks in Paris "as soon as possible" on implementing the March 10 agreement. Abdi said in a televised interview in July that the Paris meeting was set to discuss the mechanism for integrating his forces, which he said numbered around 100,000 personnel, into the country's defence ministry. Several rounds of talks have been held but the process has largely stalled, with Kurdish officials criticising a constitutional declaration announced by the new authorities, saying it failed to reflect Syria's diversity.
