Tesla drives into India: Elon Musk's EV giant opens first showroom in Mumbai; from prices to market strategy - top 10 things to know

Time of India15-07-2025
Elon Musk owned Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the opening of its first showroom at Mumbai on Tuesday, marking a major milestone for the American EV maker, as it unveiled two Model Y vehicles on display.
The move follows a teaser from Tesla's India-focused X handle last Friday, hinting at a July 2025 launch with a post that simply read 'Coming soon,' accompanied by a graphic referencing its India debut.
Here are the key highlights from Tesla's much-anticipated arrival:
First stop Mumbai:
Tesla's first Indian showroom, a 4,000-square-foot space located at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, marks the company's official launchpad in the country. Situated in the heart of the city's financial hub, the showroom currently features two variants of the Model Y, a midsize electric SUV on display.
Prices in India:
The Model Y will start at Rs 61 lakh (on-road), with the rear-wheel drive version priced at Rs 59.89 lakh. The long-range rear-wheel drive variant comes in at Rs 67.89 lakh.
High import duties bite:
India's import duties on foreign cars, ranging from 70% to 110%, have been a longstanding concern for Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The on road price is almost a third more than the vehicle's starting price in the US without a federal tax credit, Bloomberg reported.
Deliveries to begin later:
While the car is now available for bookings, customer deliveries are expected to begin only after September 2025. Tesla plans to use the interim months to complete regulatory processes, fine-tune logistics, and strengthen its after-sales infrastructure.
Regulatory nod received:
Just days before the showroom opening, Tesla received formal approval from Mumbai's Andheri RTO. A trade certificate was issued on July 11, allowing Tesla to showcase, test-drive, and sell its cars within India.
From Shanghai to Mumbai:
The cars currently on display, and available for test drives, have been imported from Tesla's factory in Shanghai. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy had earlier clarified that Tesla has no plans to manufacture in India for now.
Delhi next stop:
After Mumbai, Delhi is next in line. Tesla has plans to unveil its second showroom in the country, which will open in the capital city, expanding its footprint in India's two largest urban markets.
Charging infrastructure incoming:
Tesla will install its next-gen V4 Superchargers in India ahead of vehicle deliveries. These chargers can power up the car for a 267-km range in just 15 minutes. The company will also set up four charging stations in Delhi, equipped with a total of 16 Superchargers.
Hopes to revive sales:
Globally, Tesla's sales dipped by 13% between April and June amid growing backlash over Elon Musk's political views. The company sold 384,122 vehicles during the quarter, down from 443,956 a year earlier. India now offers a fresh opportunity at a time when demand in the US and China appears to be cooling.
A two-decade journey:
Tesla, founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, has grown from an ambitious startup into one of the most recognisable names in the EV world. Named after inventor Nikola Tesla, the company has become synonymous with electric innovation.
Tesla's entry comes on the back of India's newly announced EV policy, which offers reduced import duties and a range of incentives to global electric car makers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk also discussed potential collaborations in April during a call, followed by a meeting in February in the U.S.
With the Mumbai showroom now open, Tesla is finally set to test the waters in one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets, marking the beginning of what could be a transformative chapter for India's EV future.

India-US trade: Officials react cautiously to Russia penalty threat

NEW DELHI: As President Trump threatened to impose a penalty on India for its trade ties with Russia, Indian officials reacted cautiously as they reiterated India's position that securing energy needs of the Indian people is the overriding priority. A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said India is buying oil not because it wants to help Moscow but because it's the right thing to do based on the prevailing market conditions and the global geopolitical situation. Trump said India has always bought "a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of energy along with China". However, India had been keen on announcing new plans for defence procurement and co-production arrangements with the US too. During PM Narendra Modi's visit to the US in Feb, Trump pushed India to lower tariffs and buy more defence products from the US that would facilitate a fair trade deal. With the US encouraging India to reduce its dependence on Russian-origin equipment, the leaders had agreed to expand defence sales and co-production to strengthen interoperability and defence industrial cooperation. In that context, govt sources here said some of Trump's claims don't stand up to scrutiny. "The fact is that India-US defence trade has been increasing since 2008, while the dependence on Russia continues to reduce considerably," said an official on condition of anonymity, adding that the US is now among the top arms suppliers to India along with Russia and France. While much has been made of India's imports from Russia, little attention has been paid to the fact that its crude imports from the US have seen a significant jump too with the US emerging as the 4th largest supplier to India in April this year, according to Indian officials. ED raids unearth multiple property documents linked to former Vasai-Virar civic chief

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized multiple property-related documents linked to the former civic chief of Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC), Anil Pawar, during searches conducted at 12 premises linked to him on Tuesday and Wednesday. ED sources said Pawar had "created a number of entities in the name of his family members, relatives and benamidars to launder the bribe amount collected." The source said, "The formation of shell entities coincides with his posting as VVCMC commissioner (2022). These entities are primarily engaged in businesses where large amounts of cash are absorbed, such as construction and redevelopment of residential towers, construction of warehouses and others." You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Investigations by the ED showed an organised cartel of VVCMC officers, including the commissioner, deputy director of town planning, junior engineers, architects, CAs, and liaisoners, all operating in collusion. This cartel is responsible for large-scale illegal construction within VVCMC's jurisdiction. Commissioner VVCMC Anil Pawar, an IAS officer, is accused of orchestrating and sustaining this cartel. The ED investigation showed that after Pawar assumed the role of commissioner of VVCMC, the commission fee was set at Rs 20-25 per sq ft for the commissioner and Rs 10 per sq ft for his junior, Y S Reddy (Deputy Director Town Planning), based on the total project area from the builders. During searches at twelve premises associated with Pawar, the ED seized Rs 1.33 crore in unaccounted cash, along with numerous incriminating documents and devices. These included property documents in the names of relatives and benamidars, as well as cash and cheque deposit slips, among others. The ED sources said digital devices seized during the operations revealed Pawar's close involvement in creating a nexus of VVCMC officials and architects, CAs, and liaisoners. The money laundering case pertains to the illegal construction of 41 residential and commercial buildings on govt and private land under VVCMC's jurisdiction since 2009. This includes a 60-acre tract designated for sewage treatment and dumping facilities. Although Pawar was not the VVCMC chief at the time of construction, he failed to take action against the developments after assuming office, despite receiving complaints. The 41 buildings were recently demolished following a Bombay high court order. Flat buyers lost their money as well as their homes. In May, the ED raided 13 locations in Nalasopara, Vasai, Virar, and Hyderabad, seizing Rs 8.6 crore in unaccounted cash and Rs 23.2 crore worth of jewellery and bullion from the Hyderabad residence of Y S Reddy, deputy director of town planning, VVCMC. A few locals in Vasai burst crackers and distributed sweets late on Tuesday after the news of the ED raid spread across the city. They alleged that since Pawar was the administrator, he took unilateral decisions and corruption peaked during his tenure. "We also had written to the Maharashtra chief minister to conduct an investigation about his wealth and properties," said Sushant Patil of the Bhumiputra Sangathan, Vasai.

Trump's rant against India undercuts claim of having used trade to broker Operation Sindoor truce with Pakistan

NEW DELHI: When he lashed out at India for not lowering tariffs for American businesses, US President Donald Trump undercut the claim he has incessantly made: that on May 10, the Modi govt caved in to his threat of not doing trade with India if it did not pause Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. He had also suggested that India would get a good deal for its compliance. Trump's outburst on Truth Social on Wednesday conflicted with his claim of having frog marched India to cease Operation Sindoor by dangling the threat of stopping trade. Interestingly, the 'all things not good' admission from the US president, who has earned the reputation of being the global scold because of his petulance and pugnacity, came on a day when the two Houses of Parliament concluded a debate on Operation Sindoor that was dominated by Trump's claim of having mediated the suspension of hostilities. On Tuesday, PM Modi had refuted Trump's claim, saying no global leader had asked him to cease the offensive, and that it was the sheer ferocity of the IAF strikes on Pakistan's airbases that led Islamabad to sue for peace on May 10. That was getting as close as an Indian PM could get to accuse the US president of inexactitude. External affairs minister S Jaishankar went a step further on both Tuesday and Wednesday, stating that Trump and Modi did not talk between April 22 and June 16 when in a telephonic conversation, Modi had rebutted the suggestion that the operation against Pakistan was ceased because of anyone's mediation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Modern manufacturing techniques explained.
