Tattersalls Gold Cup on the agenda again for White Birch

Following almost a year off the track, White Birch made his long-awaited return in the Mooresbridge earlier this month and connections could not have been more delighted with his performance in defeat as the grey pushed last year's Irish Derby winner and Arc third Los Angeles to a neck.

George Murphy, assistant to his father, said: 'It was a great run and we couldn't be happier with him.
'He had a long time off the track and you'd be hoping he'll improve for the run. He's been in super form all spring, of course you're a bit nervous when they've been off that long but he showed himself very well and we're delighted with him.
'He seems to have come out of it well and we're looking forward to getting him out again.'

Aidan O'Brien nominated the Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot as likely targets for Los Angeles in the aftermath of his recent success and there appears to be every chance White Birch will take him on in both races.
'He's in the Coronation Cup at Epsom, but I'd imagine we'll go for the Tattersalls Gold Cup and go to Ascot after that – that would be the way it's looking at the moment,' Murphy added.
'He (Los Angeles) is a very good horse and I'm sure he'll be tough to beat again, but we'll look forward to it.'

Dodgers eager to generate more contact vs. Rays

August 3 - The Los Angeles Dodgers received a boost with the return of starting pitcher Blake Snell on Saturday, but the team is still looking for answers for its struggles at the plate. Los Angeles will continue that search when the Dodgers face the host Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday. The Dodgers were held to six singles and shut out for the sixth time this season in a 4-0 loss on Saturday. Snell pitched five strong innings, but the Dodgers struck out 11 times and weren't able to put a runner on second base until the sixth inning. "We've got to find a way to put the ball in play, force something to happen," Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said. "If you look at the strikeout rate, the last few weeks, it's certainly up there. We've got to find a way to reset. Just overall take better at-bats and have a two-strike approach." Tampa Bay snapped its four-game losing streak behind first baseman Yandy Diaz, who had two homers among his three hits and three RBIs. Diaz recorded his 900th career hit in the win. "It's something big," Diaz said through a translator. "After all the sacrifice and the work that I have put in, I'm glad that things are going well for me now." The Rays are adjusting without All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda, who will miss at least the next three weeks. Aranda landed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist fracture suffered during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees. Tampa Bay has also played the last two games without center fielder Chandler Simpson, who is listed as day-to-day with a left index finger sprain. Despite the injuries, Rays right fielder Josh Lowe said the team needs to remain focused. "Show up to work, tie your cleats, put your jersey on, get out there and get after it," Lowe said. "You know, the game doesn't feel bad for you. Nobody feels bad for you. You've got to go out there and compete and rely on our teammates to get each other going and give it our best every single day." Sunday's series finale features a pair of right-handers as the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-7, 2.63 ERA) faces Tampa Bay's Joe Boyle (1-1, 2.82). Yamamoto, 26, allowed one run over seven innings in a 5-2 road win over the Cincinnati Reds last Monday. Yamamoto has been impressive over his past six starts, allowing a total of eight earned runs with 38 strikeouts across 31 2/3 innings. "When he needs to make a pitch, the split's been there. Using the curveball to get back into counts and the strikeout when he needs it," Roberts said. "It's good to see him get back when he was kind of middling for a bit there and get back to being the dominant pitcher that we know he can be." Yamamoto is set to make his first career appearance against Tampa Bay, which is hoping Boyle can bounce back from a rough outing last Tuesday. The 25-year-old gave up six runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings in a 7-5 road loss to the New York Yankees. He is making his first career appearance against Los Angeles. --Field Level Media

Luka Dončić signs $165m max extension to stay with LA Lakers through 2028

Luka Dončić is staying in Los Angeles. The five-time All-NBA guard has agreed to a three-year, $165m maximum contract extension with the Lakers, ESPN reported Saturday. The deal includes a player option for the 2028–29 season and replaces his prior contract, which featured a player option for 2026–27. Dončić, 26, now avoids free agency next summer and positions himself for an even larger deal in 2028, when he would be eligible for a projected five-year, $417m contract worth 35% of the salary cap. 'This is just the beginning,' Dončić said in a team statement. 'I'm excited for what's ahead and to keep building something special with this team.' The Lakers acquired Dončić in a February blockbuster that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, one of the most seismic trades in recent NBA history. Since then, team officials led by governor Jeanie Buss and head of basketball operations Rob Pelinka have forged a close relationship with Dončić's camp, including agent Bill Duffy and longtime business manager Lara Beth Seager. 'Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players,' Pelinka said. 'He's a fierce competitor and a leader who's committed to winning. We believe he can bring championship basketball back to Los Angeles.' Despite playing a career-low 50 games last season, Dončić led the Lakers in points, rebounds, assists, steals and made threes after debuting on 10 February. He also became just the fifth player in franchise history to average at least 30 points, five rebounds and five assists in a playoff series, though the Lakers fell to the Timberwolves in the first round. Off the court, Dončić has already shaped the Lakers' offseason. He helped recruit Marcus Smart and shares a long-standing friendship with Deandre Ayton, both of whom signed with LA this summer. Dončić also addressed long-standing concerns about his conditioning in a recent Men's Health feature. Head coach JJ Redick emphasized that title contention will require the entire roster to get into 'championship shape'. For the Lakers, locking in Dončić is the clearest sign yet that a new era has arrived.
