Dodgers eager to generate more contact vs. Rays

Reuters3 days ago
August 3 - The Los Angeles Dodgers received a boost with the return of starting pitcher Blake Snell on Saturday, but the team is still looking for answers for its struggles at the plate.
Los Angeles will continue that search when the Dodgers face the host Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.
The Dodgers were held to six singles and shut out for the sixth time this season in a 4-0 loss on Saturday. Snell pitched five strong innings, but the Dodgers struck out 11 times and weren't able to put a runner on second base until the sixth inning.
"We've got to find a way to put the ball in play, force something to happen," Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said. "If you look at the strikeout rate, the last few weeks, it's certainly up there. We've got to find a way to reset. Just overall take better at-bats and have a two-strike approach."
Tampa Bay snapped its four-game losing streak behind first baseman Yandy Diaz, who had two homers among his three hits and three RBIs. Diaz recorded his 900th career hit in the win.
"It's something big," Diaz said through a translator. "After all the sacrifice and the work that I have put in, I'm glad that things are going well for me now."
The Rays are adjusting without All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda, who will miss at least the next three weeks. Aranda landed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist fracture suffered during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees.
Tampa Bay has also played the last two games without center fielder Chandler Simpson, who is listed as day-to-day with a left index finger sprain. Despite the injuries, Rays right fielder Josh Lowe said the team needs to remain focused.
"Show up to work, tie your cleats, put your jersey on, get out there and get after it," Lowe said. "You know, the game doesn't feel bad for you. Nobody feels bad for you. You've got to go out there and compete and rely on our teammates to get each other going and give it our best every single day."
Sunday's series finale features a pair of right-handers as the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-7, 2.63 ERA) faces Tampa Bay's Joe Boyle (1-1, 2.82).
Yamamoto, 26, allowed one run over seven innings in a 5-2 road win over the Cincinnati Reds last Monday.
Yamamoto has been impressive over his past six starts, allowing a total of eight earned runs with 38 strikeouts across 31 2/3 innings.
"When he needs to make a pitch, the split's been there. Using the curveball to get back into counts and the strikeout when he needs it," Roberts said. "It's good to see him get back when he was kind of middling for a bit there and get back to being the dominant pitcher that we know he can be."
Yamamoto is set to make his first career appearance against Tampa Bay, which is hoping Boyle can bounce back from a rough outing last Tuesday.
The 25-year-old gave up six runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings in a 7-5 road loss to the New York Yankees. He is making his first career appearance against Los Angeles.

Another sex toy lands on court during WNBA game

August 6 - A sex toy was tossed onto the floor of a WNBA game on Tuesday, continuing an unwanted trend around the league. The latest incident occurred in the second quarter of the Indiana Fever's road game against the Los Angeles Sparks. It followed similar incidents on July 29 when the Golden State Valkyries played against the host Atlanta Dream and on Friday when the Valkyries opposed the host Chicago Sky. On Tuesday, Sparks guard Kelsey Plum was shooting a free throw with 2:05 left in the first half when the sex toy landed in the key in front of the foul line. Plum kicked the object into the stands. An arrest was made Saturday in connection with the incident at the Dream game in College Park, Ga. Delbert Carver, 23, was charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass. No arrests were made following the Chicago occurrence, as Chicago police told ESPN on Monday, "We don't see a call of service for that incident." The WNBA said in a statement last week, "The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities." --Field Level Media

Big fourth inning lifts Rays past Angels

August 6 - Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run and Jake Mangum had a two-run single to highlight a seven-run fourth inning that led the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif. Ryan Pepiot (7-9) improved to 3-0 in three career starts against the Angels, snapping a five-start winless streak in the process. Pepiot, who began the game throwing four perfect innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six as the Rays won for just the second time in their last 13 road games. Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Los Angeles, which had a two-game win streak snapped. Jose Soriano (7-9) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out four. Soriano didn't allow a hit in the first three innings but gave up seven hits, including five straight to start the fourth inning, as Tampa Bay exploded for seven runs. Yandy Diaz opened the inning with an infield single on a high chopper over the mound and Lowe followed with his 20th homer, a 411-foot drive to dead center. It marked Lowe's fourth career season with at least 20 home runs. Junior Caminero then singled and went to third on a double by Josh Lowe. Mangum bounced a single to right to drive in Caminero and Lowe to make it 4-0. One out later, Hunter Feduccia lined a double down the left-field line, sending Mangum to third. Taylor Walls then drove in Mangum with a safety squeeze to increase the lead to 5-0, Chandler Simpson followed with an RBI double and Diaz drove in Walls with a fielder's choice to make it 7-0. Los Angeles cut the lead to 7-2 in the fifth on Adell's 23rd homer, a 410-foot drive into the left field bullpen, driving in Taylor Ward, who had reached on an error. Adell added an RBI single in the sixth to end the scoring. -Field Level Media

Daulton Varsho knocks in six as Blue Jays rout Rockies

August 6 - Daulton Varsho homered twice, doubled and drove in a career-best six runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Colorado Rockies 10-4 in Denver on Tuesday night. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered among his three hits, Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger also went deep for Toronto, which will shoot for a three-game series sweep on Wednesday. Lukes, Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk had two hits each. Hunter Goodman homered and singled for the Rockies, who have lost three in a row. Both teams had players exit the game with injuries. Colorado lost third baseman Orlando Arcia in the fifth inning when he hurt his right arm on a single to right, and second baseman Thairo Estrada left at the end of the sixth with a right leg injury sustained running to first base on a double play. Blue Jays left fielder Joey Loperfido came out in the sixth inning after he was hit outside his right knee by a 98 mph fastball from Colorado reliever Angel Chivilli. Goodman gave the Rockies the lead with a two-run homer in the first, but Lukes hit a solo home run in the third and Varsho's first homer of the night, a two-run shot to right field, gave Toronto a 3-2 lead in the fourth. The Blue Jays continued their power surge in the sixth inning. Guerrero and Barger homered on consecutive pitches. Kirk walked and Varsho hit a 3-2 changeup off the facing of the third deck in right field for a 7-2 lead. His 11th home run of the season was measured at 467 feet. Through the first two games of the series, Varsho is 5-for-10 with three homers and 10 RBIs. Rockies right-hander Anthony Molina (0-1), who made his first major league start of the season, allowed nine runs on seven hits over five-plus innings. He walked one and struck out two. Colorado got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Goodman singled, and Toronto starter Jose Berrios hit Jordan Beck with a pitch. Mickey Moniak singled to right, and Goodman scored when Varsho bobbled the ball. Warming Bernabel followed with an RBI single to make it 7-4. Berrios (8-4) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and one walk over 5 1/3 innings. He fanned five. Toronto boosted the margin in the ninth on Guerrero's RBI double and Varsho's two-run double. --Field Level Media
