Sanders took over the Buffaloes football program in the 2023 season after a successful run with Jackson State. The dynamic coach helped Jackson State to two conference titles in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
After taking over the Buffaloes football program, Sanders also helped the team secure a 9-4 record in 2024 and was instrumental in both his son, Shedeur, and Travis Hunter getting drafted into the NFL.
Hunter would go on to win the Heisman Trophy after exercising skills as an elite wide receiver and cornerback with the Buffaloes. Hunter thanked Sanders plenty when he won the award.
Sanders is looking ahead to his third season helming the Buffaloes, but he must heal up first. The good news is the coach sounds like he will be ready to take the field again in the near future.

Shedeur Sanders Breaks Silence on Deion Sanders' Health Issues
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Given the events of the last two weeks, many have expressed concern for the health of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. During an appearance on former NFLer Asante Samuel's "Say What Needs to Be Said" podcast, Sanders explained that he had stayed out of the public eye since the 2025 NFL draft at the end of April because he was battling some health-related challenges that have caused him to drop 14 pounds. Then over the weekend, Sanders abruptly canceled his speaking engagement for the Sickle Cell Disease Research & Educational Symposia, and suddenly, fans had more questions than answers about what was really going on with Sanders. And while things have most been quiet from "Coach Prime's" camp, Mary Kay Cabot tried to get to the bottom of things by asking Sanders' son Shedeur, the Browns' 2025 fifth-round pick who's battling for a spot in a crowded quarterback room that also features Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. Head coach Deion Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes talks with Shedeur Sanders #2 prior to a game against the UCF Knights at FBC Mortgage Stadium on September 28, 2024 in Orlando, Florida. Head coach Deion Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes talks with Shedeur Sanders #2 prior to a game against the UCF Knights at FBC Mortgage Stadium on September 28, 2024 in Orlando, asked Shedeur if there were any details he could divulge about his father's health, to which the 23-year-old QB quickly side-stepped the question. "Yeah I don't know what's going on [with my dad]," Shedeur said. "So I'm not here to talk about Pops and them. I'm here to be the Quarterback of the Cleveland Browns." When Cabot pushed further on the issue, Shedeur pushed back, making it known he wasn't comfortable speaking about the circumstances of his dad's ongoing health issues. "I'm focused on learning this playbook and everything I need to do to be the most successful quarterback I could be," Shedeur continued. "And be the best teammate I can be. Outside of that, I don't really have any thoughts on anything outside this game." Mary Kay Cabot tried it. Slid in a question about Prime's health, hoping Shedeur would slip. He didn't even blink. Kept it pro — talked QB growth, being a dawg for his team, and owning that playbook. Media fishing, but Shedeur ain't biting. 🎣#ShedeurSanders #DawgPound #NFL — Ossacin's Ducktail (@OssacinDucktail) June 10, 2025 So far the only clarity on what's going on behind the scenes has come from Deion's eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., who recently disclosed during a YouTube live video that Deion was "feeling well" and that the details of what he's going through are his dad's to share. Deion himself acknowledged on Wednesday morning that he's doing fine while thanking everyone who reached out and wished him well while he's away from the Colorado football team. "Wow, I am truly blessed for the abundance of well wishes, for all the thoughts and all of the prayers. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! 🙏🏾 ," Deion wrote on X. Cam Ward tabbed as Tennessee Titans' reason for optimism heading into 2025
Cam Ward tabbed as Tennessee Titans' reason for optimism heading into 2025 There is an excitement centered on the Tennessee Titans that didn't exist at the end of their miserable 2024 campaign. After a season where everything seemed to go wrong, the organization appears refreshed and filled with renewed attitude and confidence. Just how this will translate into games remains to be seen, but it's a step in the right direction. It's also something that should give fans some optimism as minicamp winds down and the break before training camp begins. Tennessee has made significant changes to its roster, and there is no doubt that the unit as a whole is in a better place than it was last year at this time. Whether it's the new-look offensive line, a rookie quarterback, or the addition of young, explosive playmakers, there is something that should allow fans to be optimistic that the Titans can turn things around in 2025. Dalton Wasserman of Pro Football Focus took a look at the Titans and came up with his reasons for optimism heading into the 2025 season. Tennessee Titans: Cam Ward Tennessee's hope for success lies with first-overall pick Cam Ward. In his lone season as a Miami Hurricane, Ward was the highest-graded quarterback in the FBS and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. That stands in stark contrast to a Titans team that finished dead last in the NFL with a 57.0 team PFF passing grade. There is certainly plenty of work to do on the rest of the roster, but head coach Brian Callahan at least has a potential franchise quarterback to work with. By all accounts, Ward has looked the part during offseason team activities and has proven to be even more of a diligent worker than the Titans expected when they drafted him with the first-overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft. All signs point to him earning the starting job before the start of the season, and the Titans offense should be better because of it.

Fox Sports 1 host continues his campaign against Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy
Fox Sports 1 host continues his campaign against Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy Colin Cowherd has made it as a successful radio host not by luck, but by hard work and knowing what gets folks to tune in to his shows. In recent years, it has been done by finding one player or two and targeting them with criticism before moving on to someone else. His latest target is Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whom he has been talking about at length this offseason. Coming off a 14-3 season, Cowherd has said the Vikings are poised for a regression, one reason is the division is too tough, the other is due to McCarthy being their starting quarterback. In his latest critique of the former Michigan quarterback, the Fox Sports 1 host dove into the conspiracy theory behind why he hasn't officially been named the starter as a reason to think the team isn't sold on him. "There's so much mystery here. Why does Minnesota keep flirting with other quarterbacks? And there's too many conflicting reports on JJ McCarthy, so I just find the whole thing. There's a lot of stuff I just don't know. I feel sometimes I'm getting, I'm getting a little bit of a spin job here. . .I never buy this: When you say this about a quarterback, that guy is a winner. Everybody under Jim Harbaugh and Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban's a winner. I don't want to hear that. If you go back and look his arm is modest. His escape ability is modest. His release wasn't super quick. There is no great trait." Cowherd has gone as far as to compare McCarthy to former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel. He famously never panned out in the NFL, despite everyone offering similar praise of him being a proven winner after winning a National Championship with Florida. While Wurffel went 4-6 in his career as a starter and only threw for 12 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, signs point to McCarthy being a little better off than Wurffel.
