
Lockheed Martin welcomes 44 interns to tech internship in Abu Dhabi
Lockheed Martin has launched the latest edition of its summer internship programme at the Centre for Innovation and Security Solutions (CISS) in Abu Dhabi, welcoming 44 aspiring engineers, scientists and future leaders.
This years record-breaking class builds on the momentum of the 2024 summer intake of 32 participants, reflecting Lockheed Martins continued commitment to developing talent in the United Arab Emirates and shaping the next generation of innovators in defence, aerospace and advanced technology.
The 2025 summer cohort includes UAE nationals, US citizens and residents representing 16 other nationalities. Six students have travelled from the United States, Singapore, India and Italy, underscoring the UAEs emergence as a global destination for innovation. All interns were selected through a rigorous, merit-based process based on academic excellence, technical skills and leadership potential.

John Mick Nicholson, US Army (Ret.), chief executive of Lockheed Martin Middle East, said: ' Lockheed Martin is a global leader in advancing defence innovation, where high-tech meets high impact. In the UAE, we are developing future-ready talent through hands-on experience and practical learning. By working together, we are not only supporting national security, but also helping to grow the economy, strengthen STEM skills, and advance the countrys long-term capabilities.'
This summer, interns will collaborate with Lockheed Martin engineers on five advanced projects focused on space systems, artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation. Project themes include lunar base construction using 3D-printed regolith, autonomous foreign debris detection for aviation safety, modular vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aircraft design, and immersive cockpit simulator development. Interns will also engage in systems planning and applied innovation.
Hala Majeed, manager of Lockheed Martin CISS, added: 'This is more than a training program. It is a long-term investment in the UAEs talent pipeline and sovereign capabilities. These students are turning knowledge into impact by working on real-world challenges and building the advanced skills needed to lead in critical sectors and technology domains.'
Since 2017, the CISS internship programme has graduated over 250 students. Alumni have gone on to build careers in aerospace, engineering, and public service, joining organisations such as EDGE Group, Tawazun, Mubadala, the Ministry of Defense, Dubai Police, TII, Khalifa University, AMMROC, GAL, and more than a dozen startups, tech firms, and industry partners. Lockheed Martin has also hired 14 Emirati interns into high-priority national security programs, underscoring its long-term investment in local talent.
The programme supports national goals for STEM education, workforce development, and industrial self-reliance, while deepening US-UAE collaboration on innovation, research and talent development.

RUWAD funds Dh2.86 million worth of projects, welcomes 449 new members in 2024
17 July 2025 00:19 SHARJAH (WAM) The Sharjah Foundation to Support Pioneering Entrepreneurs (RUWAD), affiliated with the Sharjah Economic Development Department, has issued its annual report for 2024, revealing the funding of 13 projects worth Dh2.86 million and the addition of 449 new projects to its membership report coincides with the 20th anniversary of RUWAD's founding as a pioneering government entity in supporting leading national projects in the Emirate of Sharjah, and highlights its central role in empowering the local entrepreneurial of the Sharjah Economic Development Department, Hamad Ali Abdullah Al Mahmoud, said the establishment of RUWAD under a decree by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in 2005, marked a turning point. He affirmed that the Foundation has succeeded in establishing an early and effective government model for supporting entrepreneurship and empowering thousands of Emirati entrepreneurs. He added that RUWAD remains an inspiring and bright chapter in Sharjah's journey of investing in Director of RUWAD, Fatima Al Ali, affirmed the Foundation's commitment to localising the entrepreneurial environment and driving it toward greater 2024 figures showed that RUWAD organised 57 training programmes benefiting 1,414 trainees, provided 118 consultations, and granted 81 projects government fee exemptions amounting to Dh8.727 million. Government purchases from member projects totalled nearly Dh3.485 of the Training, Research and Events Department, Amina Mohammed, said RUWAD acts as an active connector, noting that last year saw 22 business matchmaking deals between projects, 17 development meetings with partners, and participation in 10 external events and exhibitions. Internally, the Foundation achieved an Emiratisation rate of 97 percent and a job satisfaction rate of 88 percent.

Dubai Announces 10-Day Leave for Marriage
Dubai has formally approved a 10-day fully paid marriage leave benefit for UAE national employees working in government departments, under a new decree issued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. This marriage leave initiative allows eligible employees to take 10 calendar days of consecutive or flexible paid leave for their wedding, with the option to combine it with other forms of leave if desired. The move reflects Dubai's commitment to strengthening family cohesion and supporting citizens during one of life's most significant milestones. The directive applies to Emirati employees across Dubai government departments and entities that oversee special development zones and free zones. Who Qualifies? To be eligible for this new benefit, the employee must meet the following criteria: Both spouses must be UAE citizens. The employee must have completed their probationary period. The marriage contract must be certified within the UAE and must have been concluded on or after December 31 of the previous year. A copy of the marriage contract must be submitted once when applying for the leave. Leave Rules and Flexibility The policy provides employees the flexibility to use their 10 days of marriage leave either continuously or intermittently within one year from the date of the marriage contract. During this period, the employee will continue to receive their full gross salary, which includes all allowances and financial benefits. Moreover, government departments are not permitted to summon employees while they are on marriage leave—ensuring uninterrupted time for family bonding— except in the case of military personnel, who may be called in if duty demands. By offering 10 days of paid marriage leave with clear eligibility and flexible use, Dubai reaffirms its commitment to supporting Emirati citizens as they embark on the journey of married life—reinforcing the value of strong families in a progressive, citizen-first society.

Khalifa University researcher develops innovative coating for nuclear fuel safety
16 July 2025 22:43 SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Driven by the need to improve nuclear reactor safety, an Emirati researcher is focusing her efforts on developing accident-tolerant fuels (ATFs).PhD researcher Ghadeer Hegab Mohamed from the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Prof. Akram AlFantazi, is working on the development of special chromium coating for fuel coating helps the rods withstand extreme conditions during accidents, using advanced testing methods to ensure better protection and project, titled "Systematic Fuel Performance Analysis of Accident Tolerant Fuels (Development of Cr-Coated Cladding and Evaluation of its Applicability)," is funded and conducted within the Emirates Nuclear Technology Centre (ENTC) at the University."Zircaloy-based cladding, which is widely used in pressurised water reactors, reacts with steam at high temperatures-producing dangerous levels of hydrogen and causing core damage during severe accidents," she said."The chromium-coated version offers a practical, near-term solution by increasing resistance to oxidation while still fitting within current manufacturing and licensing systems."To achieve this, she developed a new method to coat the inside and outside of the fuel rod casing with chromium, making it stronger and more resistant to damage during accidents. The team also added a middle layer to help the coating stick better and protect the rods more effectively at high temperatures."This single-step process uses environmentally friendly materials to create an even coating," she chromium-coated cladding provides better resistance to high-temperature damage, gives more time to respond in emergencies, and stays strong under pressure, she noted, adding that "it works with current reactor designs, so there's no need for expensive system changes."To test the coating, she used both lab experiments and computer the lab, her team used advanced imaging tools to closely examine the coating's surface and structure, making sure it was strong, even, and also carried out high-temperature tests to see how well the coating resists damage, along with trials to check how strongly it sticks to the fuel rod on the digital side, her team used computer tools to simulate how the fuel behaves in different conditions-like how it reacts inside the reactor, how heat and fluids move around it, and what might happen during an impact of this research could be transformative. "It can greatly enhance nuclear reactor safety by reducing hydrogen buildup, slowing down core damage during accidents, and enabling more efficient fuel use," she team is continuing high-temperature tests to check oxidation resistance and how well the coating sticks. "We also plan to collaborate with international research reactors to test how the material performs under actual radiation. Our computer simulations will help confirm how it behaves inside a working reactor." "The successful implementation of this research aligns with the UAE's vision for a sustainable and safe nuclear energy programme."
