Bikes, the Bean and Black Panthers in Chicago: Wembley to Soweto initiative 2025

The backdrop of sport has been a constant in the Wembley to Soweto Foundation's projects, and the foundation has encouraged the young photographers to reflect how their communities are shaped by football, rugby, athletics, cricket, boxing and the like.
Since the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa, the charity has worked alongside the Premier League, the FA, the Olympic Games, the Cricket World Cup, the RFU and now the MLS in North America. Ultimately the US cohorts will be given the opportunity to photograph at the US Soccer World Cup in 2026 and the 2028 LA Olympics.
Over the past three years, the students from Los Angeles have had their work exhibited in the US and Europe and have been trained as teachers themselves. This is extraordinary given these young people are often from backgrounds of abject poverty, bypassed by formal education, employment opportunities, shelter and basic nourishment.
Having already taken responsibility for teaching new groups of students in South Central LA, the young photographers have now stepped out of their comfort zone and been responsible for running projects in Chicago, notably in the southern areas of the city where gang violence is an everyday occurrence. In Chicago the programmes are run in partnership with From the Streets to the Set and the Little Village Community and Boxing Center.
As part of a collaboration now in its fifth year, Leica Camera donated camera equipment to the Wembley to Soweto Foundation, which the cohort of students from Little Village, Chicago used during their training. The young students (whose work can be seen below) learned photography techniques from their LA contemporaries in a variety of locations across Chicago, from Millennium Park at the Loop to the National Museum of Mexican Art, from the Shameless House to Hampton House (home of the Black Panthers), from the streets of Cicero to the electric atmosphere of a downtown boxing gym and, of course, Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears. All these opportunities enabled the photographers to capture images and depict stories from their hometown Chicago landscape.

At the end of the project the students had the opportunity to exhibit their work in their own communities. They have already been invited to exhibit in Las Vegas and Frankfurt at IMEX conventions in November 2025 and May 2026 respectively.
A selection of the photographs shown here will also be on display at the Exchange Theatre, Twickenham on 4 and 5 July. As part of this event, the Academy Award nominee Stockard Channing's production of Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape will play simultaneously at the same venue, with all profits being donated to the Wembley to Soweto Foundation.
The funds from future exhibitions will be used to take disadvantaged young people from inner cities across the UK to work with their contemporaries from LA and Chicago at the 2026 World Cup.

Baseball star carted off in tears after suffering heartbreaking injury in first game back after three months out

Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya suffered more heartbreak on Wednesday night as he was carted off the field - just eight innings into his return from injury. The Panamanian, 26, was playing his first game in three months after recovering from a left oblique strain. 'Thank God (I'm) healthy,' Amaya said on Tuesday. But at the top of the eighth in Chicago's game against Toronto on Wednesday, he took a brutal fall as he crossed first base. Amaya flew into the air and landed heavily on the ground. He stayed down and required immediate medical treatment. Chicago trainers eventually lifted Amaya on to a cart and he was driven off the field with a towel over his face. The 26-year-old was only activated from the injured list on Tuesday - having been sidelined since May 25 - but 24 hours later, Cubs manager Craig Counsell had more bad news. Miguel Amaya landed awkwardly on first base and was carted off the field. — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 14, 2025 'You knew something was pretty seriously wrong pretty quickly,' Counsell said after the game. The manager revealed that X-rays did not show a fracture but Amaya's ankle is 'swollen up pretty good already.' Counsell added: 'It's an IL. It's bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him.' Rookie right-hander Cade Horton said of Amaya: 'Prayers to him. He's a special player, a great teammate... I hate to see what happened to him.' The third-year catcher has hit .281 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games. Amaya went 1-for-3 on Wednesday as Chicago earned a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Reese McGuire, who replaced him, and Carson Kelly are the other catchers on the roster.

Wife of ex Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden files for divorce after accusing him of abuse and sexting teens

Kate Bowman, the wife of former Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden, has filed for divorce form the musician, two weeks after accusing him of abuse and sexting teenagers. The fashion influencer filed for divorce on Wednesday after just three months of marriage, according to TMZ. She listed 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for their split, but did not provide a date of separation. Bowman — who was seen in Los Angeles earlier this month following her shocking allegations — is requesting spousal support, while also asking the court to prevent her ex, 46, from receiving any. As the couple has no children, there are no child custody or support issues to address. It's unclear if the couple, who have been together for over four years before tying the knot on May 6, have a prenup. It comes two weeks after Bowman accused him of physically attacking her, after she confronted him about sending inappropriate text messages to teenagers. 'He physically abused me,' Bowman said in court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, in regard to a series of events which unfolded on July 21. 'I'm now terrified of him.' Bowman said the bass player went 'insane' after she asked him about the alleged messages with the teenage girls - which allegedly centered around a rape fantasy. Bowman told the court that he grabbed her arms and slammed her body against a kitchen counter. 'He pulled me to the ground and was out of his mind,' Bowman told the court in her filing. Bowman described her efforts to flee the dangerous situation in her court filing. 'I managed to move around and escape him, got up, and ran out of the house to escape him,' she said. She continued: 'He ran after me in his underwear and barefoot, caught up to me, shoved me against the gate, and then tried to grab me back to the house.' Bowman said that she 'managed to escape and ran to the street' but Madden 'found [her] twice in different locations, physically abusing me each time.' Bowman included screengrabs in her filing from ring camera footage to support her claims. Bowman tried to retrieve Madden's phone, and says she wound up leaving the home afraid for her life. Bowman was able to rummage through the contents of the phone after she ran down the street and hid between cars after escaping the enraged musician's clutches, she said in court documents. Bowman told the court that Madden had never shown that level of outrage prior to their marriage. She was pointed out to the text-related allegations against Madden by a stranger, she said in the court filing. She told the court that she subsequently moved out of the home and has been residing with a friend in the wake of the conflict. Bowman told the court that Madden told her he was sorry via text message, and that he was planning on seeking help for sex addiction. She said she was concerned about Madden's potential mercurial reaction when he sees that she used a credit card of theirs to hire a lawyer in the wake of the July 21 incident. Bowman has asked for a restraining order preventing Madden from approaching within 100 yards of her person, place of business, residence or vehicle. She said that Madden has exerted monetary control over her for the duration of their four-year-plus relationship. Bowman said she has since started working a job, and is concerned that Madden will try to track her down at her work. She added that she's put a deposit down for an apartment where she will reside. Bowman is asking for expenses, in addition to custody of a pair of Siberian Husky dogs they own named Jam and Toast. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted Bowman a temporary restraining order in connection with the domestic violence allegations, but a request for Madden to vacate their home was not granted, pending a future hearing on the matter. Madden was the bass player for Maroon 5 - whose hits include moves like Makes Me Wonder, Moves Like Jagger and She Will Be Loved - for nearly 26 years, but departed the band in 2020. He stepped away from Maroon 5 in July of 2020 after he was arrested in connection with domestic violence 'I have some things that I need to deal with and address right now and so I have decided to take a leave of absence,' Madden said in a statement at the time. 'During this time, I do not want to be a distraction to my bandmates. I wish them the absolute best.'

Cubs C Miguel Amaya (ankle) carted off, headed back to IL

August 14 - By Field Level Media Miguel Amaya's return from the injured list lasted less than one full game. The Cubs catcher was carted off the field in the eighth inning of Chicago's Wednesday game in Toronto after falling to the ground as he crossed the first base bag awkwardly while beating out an infield hit to shortstop. Chicago manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that X-rays were negative but Amaya has a sprained left ankle and is headed back to the IL. Amaya, 26, had just been activated from the 60-day IL on Tuesday, having recovered from a left oblique strain, and the Cubs were sticking with three catchers on the roster. The third-year catcher has hit .281 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games. Amaya went 1-for-3 on Wednesday as Chicago earned a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Reese McGuire, who replaced him, and Carson Kelly are the other catchers on the roster. "We're going to miss him," Counsell said of Amaya.
