Baseball star carted off in tears after suffering heartbreaking injury in first game back after three months out
The Panamanian, 26, was playing his first game in three months after recovering from a left oblique strain. 'Thank God (I'm) healthy,' Amaya said on Tuesday.
But at the top of the eighth in Chicago's game against Toronto on Wednesday, he took a brutal fall as he crossed first base.
Amaya flew into the air and landed heavily on the ground. He stayed down and required immediate medical treatment.
Chicago trainers eventually lifted Amaya on to a cart and he was driven off the field with a towel over his face.
The 26-year-old was only activated from the injured list on Tuesday - having been sidelined since May 25 - but 24 hours later, Cubs manager Craig Counsell had more bad news.

'You knew something was pretty seriously wrong pretty quickly,' Counsell said after the game.
The manager revealed that X-rays did not show a fracture but Amaya's ankle is 'swollen up pretty good already.'
Counsell added: 'It's an IL. It's bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him.'
Rookie right-hander Cade Horton said of Amaya: 'Prayers to him. He's a special player, a great teammate... I hate to see what happened to him.'
The third-year catcher has hit .281 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games.
Amaya went 1-for-3 on Wednesday as Chicago earned a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Reese McGuire, who replaced him, and Carson Kelly are the other catchers on the roster.

August 17 - Ryan Bergert has enjoyed a solid start to his Kansas City tenure and now has a chance to help the Royals continue their home dominance of the Chicago White Sox. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander will seek a third straight solid start Sunday afternoon for the Royals, who can sweep this three-game set with a 14th consecutive home win over the White Sox. Bergert (1-1, 2.87 ERA) has helped an injury-plagued rotation by allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings in each of his two starts since coming from San Diego at the trade deadline last month. The Royals acquired Bergert in a deal that sent backup catcher Freddy Fermin to the Padres. This will be the first Royals' home start for Bergert, who has yielded six hits, three walks and has struck out 10 in facing Boston and Minnesota with his new club. The Royals lost both games, but that didn't dim the enthusiasm of Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro about Bergert. Braves' Michael Harris II producing hit show against Guardians
August 17 - Classic-cartoon fanatic Michael Harris II is making the most of MLB's annual Players' Weekend, both in terms of style and production. The Atlanta Braves' starting center fielder is 4-for-9 with a homer and four RBIs in the first two games of the team's series at the Cleveland Guardians, giving them a chance at a sweep Sunday afternoon. Atlanta right-hander Erick Fedde (4-12, 5.40 ERA) will oppose Cleveland left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 3.94) in the finale as Atlanta pursues its eighth victory in its past nine games. While most players pick one specialty bat for the weekend, Harris reached out to a designer with an advance order for five bats -- and additional game equipment -- featuring his favorite cartoon characters. Atlanta rookie third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr. also is on a strong run, with a career-high three hits Saturday and RBIs in back-to-back games for the first time. "That's a really good offense with a lot of guys that can hit," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said of the Braves. "It's tough when they're starting to heat up. And when you're not pitching well, it's a tough recipe." Fedde beat the Miami Marlins in his last outing, ending a nine-game losing streak that began May 26 when he was pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in four appearances against Cleveland, winning both with the Chicago White Sox in 2024. The Guardians have won Allen's last three starts, but he has only factored in the decision once. He started against the host Braves on April 26, 2024, and lost 6-2. Allen allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Cleveland is an American League-best 23-11 since July 7 but has only one run and eight hits in its first two games against the Braves, never holding the lead.
