Kannur declared extreme-poverty free district
Speaking at an event declaring Kannur district free of extreme poverty, at the district panchayat auditorium on Thursday (August 14, 2025), the Minister said the State government's first decision after assuming office in 2021 was to eradicate extreme poverty. A survey had identified 64,006 families, and special microplans were prepared for each to enable their transition. As a result, 94.47% of those identified have overcome extreme poverty.
'Kerala is set to become the first State in India and the first region globally after China to achieve the feat,' the Minister said, crediting the coordinated efforts of local bodies and district administrations.
Around 15,000 people earlier excluded from the Life Mission housing scheme have been added to the beneficiary list, with construction under way. District Collectors have been authorised to identify and allot land to the landless.
The Minister also announced that Kerala would be declared fully digitally literate on August 21, with 21.87 lakh people trained to use the K-Smart service.

Businessman alleges Kerala CPM secretary's son leaked his confidential complaint
The Kerala CPM has been hit by a fresh controversy after a Chennai-based businessman alleged that Shyam, son of state secretary M.V. Govindan, was involved in leaking a confidential complaint submitted to the party's Politburo. The businessman, Muhammad Sharshad, said he had submitted a complaint disclosing alleged illegal financial transactions involving certain CPM leaders. According to him, the documents attached to his petition were leaked and later surfaced as evidence in a defamation case filed by London-based businessman Rajesh Krishna. Sharshad claimed that Shyam was responsible for passing on the documents to Rajesh, possibly under pressure. The businessman further alleged that despite his repeated representations, the party leadership ignored his complaint. He noted that while Rajesh was invited to attend the CPM party congress in Madurai, he was eventually asked to stay away after Sharshad raised objections. In his letter to the Politburo, Sharshad accused Rajesh of transferring unaccounted funds to the bank accounts of CPM leaders. Following the leak, Rajesh approached the Delhi High Court with a defamation suit, asserting that false allegations had been circulated against him. Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Sharshad said that both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department are now probing his complaint into the alleged illegal financial transfers from Rajesh Krishna's accounts. He alleged that Rajesh used his leaked complaint to strengthen his defence in the defamation case, with the involvement of Govindan's son making it possible. The issue has drawn a sharp response from the Opposition. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan demanded a public explanation from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing the CPM state committee of deliberately covering up Sharshad's complaint. He insisted that the identities of all CPM leaders allegedly linked to the financial transactions with Rajesh must be revealed. With the allegations gaining momentum, the CPM leadership finds itself under mounting pressure to respond, while the charge against Govindan's son has cast a fresh shadow over the party's credibility.

Fighter jets, missiles, drones, rifles, and rockets…, India takes these steps to strengthen military power, Modi government also plans to...
New Delhi: The Indian Army is working relentlessly on the modernization of weapon systems of all three armed forces. Along with the development of lethal weapons, focus is also being given to small arms such as CQB carbines. After Operation Sindoor, India has taken a slew of major decisions and launched multiple projects simultaneously to multiply its military strength. These include the development of lethal weapons such as missiles and fighter jets, along with a focus on small arms like CQB carbines. Here are some of the key details: To enhance the combat capability of all three armed forces, India is working on the modernization of its weapon systems. Some of these weapons will be manufactured domestically, while others will be procured from abroad. The biggest decision by India has been regarding the development of fifth-generation fighter jets. India has launched an ambitious project to build the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). India is also working rapidly on an indigenous hypersonic missile program. The country is developing an advanced version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. India has nearly completed work on the next missile in the Kalam series, the K-6. The K-6 is an indigenously developed submarine-launched hypersonic ballistic missile with a range of 8,000 kilometers. India is developing a modern version of its multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) Pinaka. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will soon begin production of new variants of the Pinaka rocket system with extended ranges of 120 kilometers and 300 kilometers. The Tejas MK2 will be equipped with advanced systems such as an indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system. It is expected that in the coming years, the Indian Air Force may place an order to procure 200 indigenous Tejas MK2 aircraft. India is developing an indigenous air defense system similar to Russia's S-400. It is being built under 'Project Kush'. After Operation Sindoor, the pace of this project has been accelerated. Under this initiative, three versions are being developed to intercept short-range, medium-range, and long-range threats in the air.

Transgender housing scheme to be launched in Kerala this week
The Social Justice department will begin calling for applications for its housing scheme for transgender persons this week. The department hopes to begin handing over financial assistance under the scheme this year itself. Minister for Social Justice R. Bindu had told The Hindu in an exclusive interview earlier that the State government was planning a novel initiative to provide housing for transgender persons. At present, two short-stay homes, one each, function in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi for transgender persons. However, the housing scheme is seen as an answer to the discrimination and stigma faced by them in securing safe accommodation. The yet-to-be named scheme aims at providing financial assistance to transgender persons for both purchase of land and construction of house. Transgender beneficiaries of housing schemes such as LIFE Mission who have received financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for house construction will be given an additional ₹2 lakh as gap funding to complete the work. Initially, five transgender persons will be given this assistance. Those who have land but are not eligible for assistance under LIFE Mission will be provided ₹6 lakh. In the next phase of the scheme, transgender persons who can avail themselves of loan from any agency suggested by the department will be given interest subvention. The beneficiary will need to pay back only the principal amount. A maximum of ₹15 lakh will be sanctioned as loan for purchase of land and house construction. The beneficiaries will be selected on priority basis from the applicants. Priority will be given to those who do not own a house, those living in temporary shelters or unsafe conditions, differently abled transgender persons, and the elderly. A technical committee chaired by the Social Justice director will be set up for the selection. Clear guidelines have been framed for this. Applications can be submitted directly or online. The department had initially mulled the idea of providing housing to transgender persons in an apartment complex. It was dropped though owing to the possibility of ostracism by residents from outside the transgender community. The housing scheme in its current format offers beneficiaries the option of staying in a location of their choosing. The government has sanctioned ₹50 lakh for the first phase of the scheme. It hopes to sanction more funds for the scheme next year provided it is received successfully. Minister R. Bindu will launch the housing scheme at the inaugural event of the three-day 'Varnapakittu' transgender arts festival in Kozhikode on August 21.
