Shefali Jariwala's Postmortem Report Expected Next Week: Police
Actor and model Shefali Jariwala, best known for her appearance in the 2002 music video Kaanta Laga, died on Friday, June 27. She was 42.
While the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, preliminary medical findings suggest cardiac arrest. Sources close to the development told NDTV that the Police in Amboli have stated that the final post-mortem and forensic reports are expected within a week.
A police official said that prima facie, there is no indication of foul play and her family also does not suspect anything suspicious.
The post-mortem was conducted at Cooper Hospital and recorded on video. "She was brought to the hospital around 11:15 pm (Friday). The on-duty doctor declared her dead on arrival," a hospital source said.
Initial findings from the medical examination indicate that her death may have been caused by "low blood pressure, cardiac arrest and heavy gastric condition."
According to police, the suspected cardiac arrest may have been triggered by a combination of fasting and the use of unsupervised anti-ageing medication.
Shefali was rushed to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai by her husband, actor Parag Tyagi. A team of five doctors is currently analysing whether medication, food poisoning or her history of epilepsy may have contributed to the cardiac arrest.
Mumbai Police have said that she ate stale fried rice while fasting and had taken anti-ageing injections without recent medical consultation. During a visit to her residence, police and forensic experts found glutathione injections, Vitamin C shots and acidity pills, raising concerns over prolonged and unsupervised use of such treatments.
A source told NDTV, "There was a puja at home on June 27, due to which Shefali was fasting. Despite this, she took an injection of anti-ageing medicine in the afternoon of the same day. These medicines were advised to her by a doctor years ago, and since then she has been taking this treatment every month. So far in the police investigation, it has come to light that these medicines could be a major reason for cardiac arrest."
Another doctor, who had treated Shefali in the past, told NDTV on condition of anonymity that she had last visited their clinic in March, nearly three months before her death.
The police are currently awaiting reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to confirm the exact cause of death.
Who Was Shefali Jariwala?

42-year-old had severe vitamin B12, Vitamin D deficiency despite diabetes medication: What caused it?
A 42-year-old man, with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, came to us complaining of persistent fatigue, tingling in his hands and feet and trouble walking. This meant that his blood sugar had begun to damage his nerves. Predictably his HbA1c count (average blood sugar of three months) was 9.2 per cent (poorly controlled diabetes). But what surprised me was his vitamin counts: Vitamin B12: 123 pg/mL (severely deficient), Vitamin D3: 8 ng/mL (deficient) and magnesium: 1.5 mg/dL (low). So what was he doing wrong? The man had been taking Metformin for years without B12 supplementation. His diet lacked dairy and fruits due to misconceptions about managing blood sugar. After starting vitamin B12 injections and vitamin D supplementation, along with improved diets and diabetes control, his symptoms of neuropathy significantly improved over four months. This case underlines the importance of looking beyond just blood sugar numbers as vitamin deficiencies can mimic or aggravate diabetic complications. Beyond its direct effects on glucose metabolism, diabetes can also interfere with nutrient absorption, leading to several micronutrient deficiencies. Over time, these deficiencies can worsen diabetic complications such as neuropathy, poor wound healing and cardiovascular issues. Why do people with diabetes develop vitamin deficiencies? This is because of increased urinary losses. High blood sugar levels lead to a condition called osmotic diuresis, where the kidneys excrete more water and, along with it, water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B12, and Vitamin C. This effect is more pronounced in poorly controlled diabetes. Diabetes can cause gastroparesis, or delayed stomach emptying, which affects digestion and absorption of nutrients. Long-term use of Metformin, a common diabetes medication, is also known to interfere with Vitamin B12 absorption in the intestines. Chronic low-grade inflammation in diabetic patients increases the body's need for antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E and selenium. However, these nutrients are often depleted faster than they can be replenished. Type 2 diabetes is commonly associated with obesity and fatty liver, both of which impair fat metabolism. This affects the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. Dietary restrictions or poor diet People with diabetes often limit their food choices, sometimes avoiding fruits or certain carbohydrates due to fear of sugar spikes. This can unintentionally lead to insufficient intake of essential vitamins and minerals. Most common deficiencies Vitamin D deficiency is common as it is linked with insulin resistance and immune dysfunction. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common, especially those on Metformin, and can cause fatigue, memory loss, and worsening neuropathy. Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency can lead to worsening diabetic neuropathy and cardiac issues. Magnesium is an important co-factor for insulin signalling. But this is often lost through urine in diabetics. What can patients and caregivers do? Do not miss your routine screening, especially for B12 and Vitamin D in long-term diabetes patients or those on Metformin. Include nutrient-rich foods like green leafy vegetables, low-sugar fruits, dairy, nuts, and seeds. Under the supervision of a healthcare provider, appropriate supplementation can prevent long-term complications. Also, periodic assessment of the side effects of diabetic medications is essential. Diabetes management is not just about sugar — it's about complete nutritional care. (Dr Chaturvedi is senior endocrinologist, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi)

World Brain Day 2025: Experts Say Mental Health In Workplace Is Important, "Stress Is Not A Badge Of Honour"
World Brain Day is observed annually on July 22 to raise awareness about brain health. The theme for World Brain Day 2025 is "Brain Health for All Ages" to emphasise the importance of maintaining brain health throughout one's life, from birth to old age. The day has also given an opportunity to talk about mental health in the workplace. "With the work and hustle culture, mental health can no longer be neglected or ignored," Dr Maitri Thakker, clinical psychologist, told NDTV. "It calls for attention, awareness, responsibility and care." "We need to understand that stress is not a badge of honour, for chronic stress leads to burnout, sleep difficulties, irritability and other health complications as well," Dr Thakker added. She added that if stress is left unacknowledged or unaddressed, it spills over into our relationships and plummets self-esteem. Importance Of Mental Health In The Workplace Mental health in the workplace has become a crucial aspect of employee well-being and productivity. It addresses how individuals manage stress and make decisions in their roles. From tight deadlines to blurred work-life boundaries, the modern workplace can very easily become both: a source of purpose and a space of long-term stress and tension. Dr Thakker said that we show up to work every day with not only our abilities but also our anxieties and stress, and also our coping mechanisms, which are both healthy and unhealthy. Employees who manage their mental health effectively are more focused and efficient. Addressing such issues can lead to lower absenteeism rates, as it is expected that employees will take less time off due to stress or illness. Dr Thakker stated that a workplace that promotes mental health fosters positive relationships, reduces conflicts and creates a more collaborative culture. Such workplaces also have lower turnover rates because employees feel valued and don't seek employment in other companies. Depression, anxiety and burnout are some of the common mental health issues in the workplace. Here are some simple tips to implement changes: Mental health check-ins: Employees can start conversations about how people are actually doing. Change at senior level: If the change happens at the top level, employees would feel like they also have a space to express. Draw boundaries: Avoid after-work hours communication, celebrate the small wins, reward outcomes rather than rewarding overworking. Take Care Of Your Brain Dr Deep Das, a neurologist at CMRI Kolkata, told NDTV, "The brain is the only organ that defines who we are-our thoughts, memories, and choices. It can't be replaced, transplanted, or rebooted." "While AI can mimic intelligence, it cannot replicate the human mind's empathy, imagination, or resilience. On World Brain Day, let's remember: brain health is not just for the elderly-it's for every age." "These simple habits today can shield you from stroke, dementia, and even depression tomorrow," Dr Das said.

Days Before Resignation, VP Dhankhar Hinted At Full Term, But With A Caveat
Last Updated: The remark, largely overlooked at the time, has gained renewed attention following his sudden departure from office. Just ten days before his unexpected resignation, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar had expressed confidence in serving his full term until August 2027, but with a caveat. According to a report by NDTV, Dhankhar remarked while speaking at an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University on July 10. 'I will retire at the right time, August 2027," Dhankhar stated during his address, before qualifying the comment with, 'subject to divine intervention." The remark, largely overlooked at the time, has gained renewed attention following his sudden departure from office. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons, triggering speculation in political circles. In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was stepping down with immediate effect to 'prioritise health care". 'To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he said in the letter to the President. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till August 2027. The resignation of Dhankhar, also the Rajya Sabha Chairman, came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. He had recently undergone angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March this year. He appeared not so well at a few events, but has been mostly seen as lively and energetic in his most public appearances, including in Parliament. In his eventful tenure as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar has had several run-ins with the Opposition, which had also moved a motion to impeach him. The motion to remove him, the first time in independent India to remove a sitting Vice President, was later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. He is the third Vice President of India after V V Giri and R Venkataraman to resign during tenure. Giri and Venkataraman had resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election. There was no official word from anyone in the government or the ruling BJP on why Dhankhar resigned or who could be his successor. According to rules, elections have to be held 'as soon as possible" to fill the post of vice president. However, the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman can take over the House proceedings till the time a new vice president is elected. Dhankhar was the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's candidate in the election for Vice President, who is the ex-officio Chair of the Rajya Sabha, in 2022. His resignation triggered speculation with the Congress expressing surprise, saying it is 'totally unexpected" and there is 'far more to it than meets the eye". 'The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. His abrupt resignation follows a day of surprising development in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an Opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned the same in the House and asked the secretary general to take further necessary steps. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
