E-Junkies: Katy Kung agreed to do tough labour in TVB reality show because 'might as well choose the most challenging one', Entertainment News

Hong Kong actress Katy Kung is an example of an artiste who goes all the way for her work, despite the challenging parts of the assignment.
In a recent episode of TVB reality series A Day With A Pro, where artistes try out tough jobs, the 35-year-old is seen going all out as a maintenance worker, cleaning out cockroaches and faece-filled drainage systems.
Speaking to AsiaOne on May 31 at StarHub's new flagship store in Paragon she said: "A lot of people asked why my company assigned me to do this show. That's actually not the case, they had asked me beforehand if I was okay to do related work like this.
"I feel that since I agreed to do this, then I might as well choose the most challenging one. It was an unforgettable experience to have a chance to be exposed to work like this."
Katy also recalled vividly of an instance where she opened up a drain cover and cockroaches skittered towards her.
"I got quite a shock because they were running in my direction. If they were going in the opposite direction, then maybe I wouldn't be so afraid... I am actually okay seeing cockroaches, so long as they don't fly," she shared.
She added that she experienced the tasks of a maintenance worker for two days for filming and while it was tough work, she also didn't want to delay the staff members.
Katy shared: "To be honest, it was really tiring, but this was also a job where I had to coordinate with the other maintenance workers. So, I told myself that I needed to work faster, or they would have a difficult time too.
"I couldn't just think about myself because everyone was also tired. It was a very hot day and there were no clouds at all. I just told myself to get the task done quickly so that the workers wouldn't have a tough time as well."
A staff member offered her a lift home and told her later that the smell actually lingered in their vehicle for a few days. View this post on Instagram

Katy and TVB actor Him Law were in Singapore last weekend where they met and played games with fans at the StarHub flagship store in Paragon on May 31 and also performed outside Jurong Point the following day.
She shared that she was last in Singapore about six years ago and looked forward to eating local food, especially black pepper crabs that evening. View this post on Instagram

Katy arrived on May 31 and fans gathered at the airport to warmly welcome her.
When asked how she felt meeting her fans, she said: "I actually felt quite apologetic today, because there was a delay, and I came out of the arrival hall late. But they were all waiting for me.
"I had told them earlier not to come because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to take photos or sign autographs for them, but they were so nice, they waited for me for a long time and were also very enthusiastic. They even bought a pandan cake for me knowing that I love eating it." View this post on Instagram

Katy also introduced her upcoming TVB drama The Map of Truth, which is expected to be released this year.
She shared: "The title of the drama sounds like a variety show, but actually it's a drama. There is a small element of suspense, but it's also a touching story. There may be some scary scenes. It seems like audiences prefer series like this, such as Unchained Medley (2023)."
The Map of Truth tells the story of feng shui expert Master Zhuang Yichen (Wayne Lai) who creates a social media channel to discuss and visit places with supernatural elements. As he gains popularity for his content, sceptic influencer Bi Ping (Katy) uses scientific explanations to debunk Master Zhuang's discussions and the two begin a fight to outwit each other, with the line between superstition and reality becoming increasingly blurred.
Katy said that while filming the drama, they visited "almost every cemetery in Hong Kong" and shared an unforgettable experience she had.
She recounted: "There was a day when I drove myself to the filming location, which was in a cemetery. The cemetery doesn't seem to be maintained and is located at the top of a mountain. A staff member told me [over the phone] that they would arrive in about half an hour, and I could meet them there, so I drove over.
"But when I reached there, there was not a single person in sight. I thought I went to the wrong location, but when I called them, I was told that they had a delay and would arrive in another half an hour. I was alone at the cemetery, so I quickly lowered my car seat and closed my eyes to wait for them. That was quite an unforgettable experience."
When asked if it was during the day or night, she responded that it was the former, adding with a laugh: "If it was nighttime, I would have left immediately."

Why that hand-wringing over The Projector isn't pointless

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox The casual mourners are telling those hardest hit that, yes, their loss means something. In a nutshell, The Projector was, in the words of founder Karen Tan, 'a home for creatives, misfits, and dreamers', says the writer. The funeral is in full swing. Over the last few days, my Instagram feed has been awash in black – specifically, the black of local cinema The Projector's grim announcement that it is shuttering for good . Lamentation blooms in many forms: crying emojis, caps-locked exclamations of shock, meandering meditations on loss, old photos of happier days at The Projector, even a well-intentioned if slightly puzzling petition calling on the Government to safeguard the indie institution as a cultural infrastructure asset.

WWE or Hollywood? Maher considering next move after Rugby World Cup

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MANCHESTER, England - U.S. rugby player Ilona Maher said she is contemplating an offer to participate in WWE wrestling as a stepping stone to Hollywood after the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off on Friday in England. "I've been approached before by the WWE," she told the BBC, joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous'. "I should think about it, there is great money in it." Maher is the world's most followed rugby player with nearly nine million followers across Instagram and TikTok. She was also a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars", posed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and was named best breakthrough athlete at this year's Espys, ESPN's annual award show. "I would love to get into the acting space and the scripted space. I think a Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson, John Cena progression - I would love to do that," Maher said. "It would be exciting to see my body type on the screen. I'll start off small - probably like a hot assassin or something, let's not get too crazy. I'm not going to be in a rom-com just yet. "We'll see. The world is open, but I do see myself coming back to rugby." The United States play favourites England to open the World Cup on Friday at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. REUTERS

Yoga alongside a live DJ set? Get to know Beam, the latest movement studio in town

A Vinyasa class at Beam isn't quite the same as what you'll experience anywhere else. Whilst music is typically the accompaniment in a fitness class, here, music pours out of a live DJ set or is specifically curated for the class, switching up according to the movement. The man behind the console would be familiar to most—music director Manfred Lim (commonly known by his stage moniker Myrne), who is also co-founder to Beam. A labour of love co-founded by Wong Shi En and Josephine Bahari who takes care of yoga programming and design and branding respectively. ' Beam, at its very essence, is a multi-disciplinary movement studio that integrates music in all of our classes to a high degree. The idea came together out of our shared love for fitness and music, with the goal to create an immersive experience for both music lovers and practitioners alike. It's more an 'experience' than a 'class', but the practice itself is rooted strongly in Vinyasa,' offers Lim. Courtesy of Beam Currently, four main classes are offered at Beam—all to cater to various fitness goals: Vinyasa Flow, Slow Flow, Mob + Flex (Mobility) and Submersion, which happens to be their signature meditative practice, that's soundtracked on site by Lim, with music that mirrors the energy and flow of participants in the class. Below, Lim shares more about the philosophy behind Beam and his process of curating music that moves and restores. What goes into a class at Beam? I've found that engaging multiple senses enhances the intensity of a sensory experience. For example, music sounds slightly better with visuals and mood lighting; a soak in the tub feels calmer with a peaceful song playing. When we have our classes at RASA, the artistic overhead lighting and their world-class, custom hand-assembled TPI sound system really puts attendees in a different headspace. And the view! It's a little poetic to be in a soundproofed room in the heart of the CBD—the engine of Singapore's success—doing yoga to ambient music, as if you were escaping from the world for an hour. Beyond involving sensory elements like light and sound, our class philosophy is to create experiences that feel holistic and well-rounded. Many of our yoga classes stay fresh by weaving in elements from other movement disciplines—such as animal flow and calisthenics—resulting in a practice that is both dynamic and expansive. That really shines through in our space collaborations with unique venues like RASA Space (a world-class bar and nightclub), and AIR CCCC (a sustainable restaurant nestled in the middle of nature). So when we're looking to collaborate with venues, we usually try to highlight something about the space that makes the experience really unexpected and unique. View this post on Instagram A post shared by beam ✨ (@_beamworld) A typical movement class involves music. How does Beam's differ and what is it meant to evoke? This is one of the few classes where the music morphs to what you're doing in class. If you're hitting an advanced or unfamiliar pose, the music gets a little louder and more persuasive; likewise, once you're done, it brings you back down into a calmer, familiar place. Structuring a class like that tends to put you in the center of attention, like you're going on a deep personal journey. I collaborated closely with Shi En, who devised all of the class flows, to structure the music and sets to many of the 'peak moments' in each class. As a musician yourself, how differently do you approach how the sounds you mix or curate for a Beam session? How would you classify the sounds at Beam? It's very different from preparing for a traditional DJ set. To start, the music I play during these sets include songs that have kept me grounded through the years, or pieces of music I find deep peace and enjoyment in. Some of these tracks feel a bit more poignant when you're really intently focusing on the music, which in our classes you can do during Shavasana (a pose where you lie on your back with limbs relaxed and eyes closed). In my opinion, the music in this genre occupies a strange space—it's music that should be lively enough to be felt and focused on, but not too overbearing to take precedence over class flow. As for music genres, it's a lot of musique concrète, ambient, neoclassical, downtempo, and meditative drones. The music is functional yet immersive; equally rewarding when focused on, or left in the background. Courtesy of Beam With the rise of wellness and recovery spaces in Singapore, more people seem to be slowing down and taking a breath—is that the aim of Beam as well? Why do you think people are gravitating towards these spaces? I agree, somewhat. On the contrary, I think learning to slow down and be more in tune with your body is a conscious, intentional act that takes a lot of work to get good at. It's very easy to stay out late for drinks, but it's harder to commit to a 7:45am Sunday yoga class. To me, it feels like more of a re-direction of energy into activities that were previously thought of as unproductive. Also, as intense fitness activities become more popular (e.g. HYROX, trail marathons, etc), intentional recovery spaces will too. As the world grows slightly noisier and more chaotic, Beam's place in that world is to find and nourish one's sense of self . What can we expect from Beam in the near future? We're going to be continuing our classes at RASA over the next few months, from Wednesdays to Fridays weekly. For September, we're hosting yoga classes at Nowhere Baths so we're really excited for that! Book a class at Beam here.
