DA claims victory over VAT hike reversal amid political tensions
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen is adamant that the decision to reverse the controversial 0.5 percentage point increase in value-added tax (VAT) was a direct result of the DA's legal challenge.
'Well, I think it's very clear from the beginning that we were opposed to the VAT hike,' Steenhuisen said in an interview with eNCA on Friday.
'We made it very clear before we went into the vote in Parliament, and now all the other parties have come around to our viewpoint.'
He criticised other parties for trying to take credit for the reversal.
'It's kind of like somebody setting a house on fire and then expecting credit when they throw a bucket of water on it,' he said.
'We are in this situation because those parties represented at the press conference yesterday were the perpetrators of the VAT hike. They're the ones who voted for it.'
His comments come after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the VAT rate would remain at 15%.
The National Treasury said the increase, originally scheduled to take effect on May 1, was withdrawn following consultations with political parties and a review of parliamentary recommendations.
Despite being part of the ANC-led Government of National Unity (GNU), the DA has had tense relations with the ruling party, especially after refusing to support the 2025 Budget Fiscal Framework that included the VAT increase.
The DA, along with opposition parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), voted against the budget and took the matter to the Western Cape High Court.
Following Godongwana's announcement, the DA quickly claimed victory.
Steenhuisen insisted the change would not have occurred without the court pressure.
'If it wasn't for the court action and the dreadful day Treasury had in court, where it became clear their arguments were not gaining traction, there would have been no volte-face from the Finance Minister,' Steenhuisen said.
'The Minister of Finance had been adamant in court papers that there was no alternative to the VAT increase. What changed? It was the very real prospect of losing the case.'
Meanwhile, other political parties have also claimed credit.
uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary general Floyd Shivambu told supporters outside Jacob Zuma's court hearing in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday that Jacob Zuma's party had led public resistance to the VAT increase.
'It's only the MK Party that went to the streets to reject the VAT increase,' Shivambu said.
'While others were trying to discuss VAT in court and in Parliament, it's only us who went to the ground.'
Other parties, including ActionSA, Build One SA, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), said they engaged the ANC directly to find alternative solutions.
Build One SA leader Mmusi Maimane praised the negotiations with the ANC, calling them key to the VAT reversal.
However, on Thursday, IOL News reported that Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy leader Kenny Kunene accused the DA of hypocrisy, slamming the party's claim of victory as dishonest.
'They woke up this morning after seeing the statement from the minister and claimed victory — that's quite hypocritical,' Kunene said during a multi-party media briefing in Sandton.
He alleged that the DA attempted to use the VAT hike as leverage to push for state asset privatisation and political appointments within the GNU.
'They tried to use it to change what Parliament had already resolved,' Kunene said.
'So a party of extortionists has failed to serve South Africans on an important matter of national interest.'
Kunene further claimed that the DA made demands during negotiations, offering to support the VAT hike if certain conditions were met, including the scrapping of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill, and the privatisation of a state port.
'When the extortionists could not get their way, they ran to court,' Kunene said.
'The DA has no moral authority to claim victory for the removal of the VAT increase.'

More than 53 people have been charged for theft, corruption, fraud, money laundering, contraventions of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, and racketeering for stealing and looting more than R2 billion of VBS Mutual Bank money since 2018. Ramokgopa was speaking during a well-attended memorial service of the late ANC veteran, Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, at the George Phagadi Town Hall in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, this week. Farisani passed away on Thursday, 29 May 2025, and his funeral will be held at the University of Venda Stadium, outside Thohoyandou, on Saturday. The former prominent Lutheran Church Bishop and known political struggle hero was honoured for his resilience in the fight for freedom and equality against the apartheid regime. The service was attended by South African Communist Party deputy national chairperson Thulas Nxesi, Limpopo first female premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Limpopo ANC secretary Vhamusanda Reuben Madazhe, Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature Dr Makoma Makhurupetsa, Mopani district municipality Mayor Pule Frelimo Shayi and leaders from various religious and political structures in the province and beyond. Speaking to the mourners at the service, Ramokgopa said Farisani had fought for VBS victims. 'Government, under the tutelage of President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been on the side of the victims. We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail. 'The Reserve Bank and the Department of Finance, under the tutelage of Minister Enoch Godongwana, must assist the grieving communities to rebuild the collapsed VBS Mutual Bank,' she said. 'We have many times successfully rebuilt our country, including the health system in Gauteng during the predicaments of Life Esidimeni. We have also successfully rebuilt the Limpopo provincial government after it collapsed through fraudulent activities after some in the era of mismanaged government funds. 'There is nothing that can stand in our way to rebuild the VBS Mutual Bank and begin on a clean sheet,' she said to thunderous applause. Veteran journalist Mathatha Tsedu was invited to the stage to give testimony on the life well spent by Farisani and how his political acumen bolstered his journalism prowess. However, Tsedu used the platform to voice criticism of the irregularities surrounding the ANC Vhembe regional elective conference in May. 'This is the ANC of Farisani. He would be disappointed by how you skipped vital items in the programme, only to jump into nominations and elections of the top five officials. 'How do you jump the secretariat report and other vital items on the programme as if the main objective of the conference was to elect leaders,' he asked. The conference saw Tshitereke Matibe living up to his name — 'Tshitereke,' a Venda name meaning 'protest' — as he staged a bold demonstration at the venue, ultimately securing a fourth term. Tsedu's criticism was challenged by an ANC regional executive committee (REC) member. 'Tsedu does not understand the politics of the ANC. This is not journalism, he must just leave politics to politicians, and journalism to the newsroom. ‘Declare Limpopo a GBV disaster zone'
Thohoyandou police station registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Limpopo must be declared a gender-based violence disaster zone, says the ANC Women's League. This is after a large number of contact crimes such as rape, murder and sexual harassment were registered in different police stations across the province in the fourth quarter of 2024/25. The province's Thohoyandou police station has been branded the rape capital of South Africa after it registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Despite the fourth quarter crime statistics revealing a decrease in contact crimes, Limpopo recorded 105 cases including murder, assault GBH, rape, robbery and theft. The second biggest political party in the Limpopo provincial legislature, the DA, said Thohoyandou was in the top 30 stations for all contact crimes, where it ranked 15th. The station also appeared in the top 30 stations for various crimes 13 times. 'Thohoyandou is most often against the downward trend of a specific crime category in Limpopo, with increases in assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm [GBH], common assault and common robbery. 'Urgent high-level intervention is required as the SA Police Service (Saps) is losing the battle against crime in Thohoyandou,' DA provincial spokesperson for transport and community safety Marie Helm said. GBV crisis Helm, who doubles up as a member of the Limpopo legislature in Lebowakgomo, said Thohoyandou ranked first nationally for reported sexual offences and rape, Seshego police station 13th and Mankweng 18th in the top 30 stations for sexual offences. She said the per capita chances of being raped in Limpopo was above the national average and was indicative of persistent misguided efforts to instil a lack of zero tolerance for gender-based violence and femicide (GBV+F) in the society, as well as a lack of resources and experienced investigating officers. Provincial deputy speaker for the Limpopo legislature and secretary of the ANC Women's League in the province, Tebogo Mamorobela, pleaded with Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba to declare Limpopo a gender-based violence disaster zone. She said defenceless women and children were abused on a daily basis. Mamorobela added that the level of crime in Limpopo has reached a boiling point and the government and communities must join forces to win the war against it. No place for criminals Transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye said there was no place for criminals, especially those who prey on defenceless women and children in her government. The MEC was speaking during a visit to the family of slain Ndzalamo Mlondobozi, who died after her live-in lover allegedly ran over her with a car. No arrests have been made and police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said investigations were still underway. 'That is why our government, under the stewardship of our premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba is here today. We are here to provide support and pay our condolences to the family. 'We promise that no one is above the law and we will do everything and anything in our power to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrator in this case is made to face the law, come high or low water.' On the rape and murder heightened statistics, Matye said Thohoyandou police station was the entry and exit of all African people from the Southern African Development Community countries into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post. Without revealing the budget, Mathye said funds had been allocated and set aside to build more police stations and satellite police stations in the Vhembe region this financial year. Limpopo DA lays charges over GNT pension crisis
LIMPOPO – On Monday, May 26, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo laid criminal charges against the CEO of Great North Transport (GNT) and the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), the sole shareholder of GNT. The charges, filed at the Polokwane Police Station, relate to the non-payment of employee pension fund and medical aid contributions. Jacques Smalle, DA Limpopo provincial spokesperson for economic development, environment, and tourism, said LEDA, as the sole shareholder, holds both statutory and fiduciary responsibilities for GNT's financial management. 'The scale of the crisis became clear during an urgent sitting of the Limpopo Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism on Friday, May 23,' Smalle explained. 'This meeting, which followed the DA's repeated calls for GNT and LEDA to account, revealed unpaid contributions to three pension schemes totalling R6.78 million and affecting 945 employees. In some cases, employee memberships have already been suspended. If at least R1 million is not paid by the end of May, all memberships could be suspended, potentially resulting in permanent loss of pension benefits.' Smalle attributed the crisis to 'years of corruption, mismanagement, and lack of accountability' at GNT. He added that the company's failure to implement a viable turnaround strategy further deepened its financial troubles. 'The situation at GNT is dire; it has become an unsustainable entity,' Smalle said. 'The charges laid include theft, fraud, and violations of both the Pension Funds Act and the Medical Schemes Act, all of which are criminal offences.' In response to the allegations, Mthunzi Dlamini from LEDA acknowledged the outstanding contributions and said efforts were underway to settle the payments within the week. 'GNT has faced ongoing financial constraints in meeting its obligations,' Dlamini said. 'However, strategic steps have recently been taken, including the procurement of new buses to replace the ageing fleet and the launch of a bus lease programme aimed at increasing operational capacity.' LEDA CEO Thakhani Makhuvha said the LEDA is committed to resolving the issue. 'As the shareholder, LEDA has decided to step in and ensure that all outstanding pension and medical contributions are brought up to date,' Makhuvha said.
