Cincinnati Open: Carlos Alcaraz picks 50th win of the year before adverse weather disrupts schedule
Carlos Alcaraz celebrates his win at the Cincinnati Open. (Image: X) Carlos Alcaraz beat the heat and humidity of a Midwest summer as the world number two advanced to the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open on Tuesday. The Spaniard moved through hours before an evening rainstorms and lightning spoiled the night-time scenario, leaving men's and women's third seeds stranded in third round matches. Alexander Zverev was set to serve for the match against Brandon Nakashima, leading the American 6-4, 5-4 when the match was forced off court by the threat of lightning.. It was a similar situation for American Jessica Pegula, fighting back against Pole Magda Linette who won the first set 7-6 (7/5), before last year's finalist claimed the second 6-3. Toronto champion Ben Shelton never got on court against Roberto Bautista Agut due to rainstorm conditions that forced officials to call it a night early. Second seed Alcaraz kept his exposure to a minimum in 32 Celsius conditions, taking an efficient 95 minutes to dispatch Serb Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4, for his 50th match win of the year. "Medjedovic doesn't like to run that much, so I tried to move him around as much as possible," Alcaraz said. "But it was difficult with the ball flying so much and his shots coming so fast. I tried to defend in a good way." Alcaraz has been on a tear in 2025 as he chases Jannik Sinner in the ATP rankings, and now owns 13 straight victories at the Masters 1000 level. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo He will play for the quarter-finals against Luca Nardi after the Italian defeated Jakob Mensik 6-2, 2-1 with the Czech retiring after 42 minutes. Five-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz, who is preparing for the approaching US Open start, added: "I was really happy to get the win in a very difficult match. "The season is very long and in at least half of your matches you don't feel that good (physically). "But you have to stay positive and play your best tennis on the day. I'm proud about that. It's a goal of the season." Toronto finalist Karen Khachanov, earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jenson Brooksby. Francisco Comesano and Reilly Opelka both felt the heat of their mid-day match, which was interrupted for 45 minutes by rain, as the Argentine limped to a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5 win while saving three match points. Comesano needed a medical time out midway through the second set, but came back out to continue what turned into a fight of nearly three hours against the American. Opelka called for the doctor just moments from his eventual loss, complaining of dizziness and high blood pressure after being broken for 5-6 in the final set. After a quick consultation at his chair, Opelka was back on court to weakly scoop a return into the net on his opponent's second match point. The 71st-ranked South American will face ninth seed Andrey Rublev, who beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. Opelka, noted for his big serve, fired 27 aces but also committed nearly 60 unforced errors. Comesano broke on four of his 13 chances. He is the first Argentine into the Cincy round of 16 since Diego Schwartzman in 2022. Gauff wins by walkover In the WTA draw, second seed Coco Gauff eased into the fourth round when opponent Dayana Yastremska withdrew before their Tuesday match. The American, who won the 2023 Cincinnati title and followed up with a US Open crown, will await an opponent from former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko and Italian Lucia Bronzetti. Yastremska was unable to play due to illness, the WTA said. Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, last season's Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist, defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 7-6, (7/2), 6-1 while German qualifier Ella Seidel continued her strong showing with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8/6) defeat of McCartney Kessler. Two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova outlasted American Iva Jovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

St. Louis Rapid And Blitz: D Gukesh Slumps To Surprise Defeat Against Sam Shakland, Fabiano Caruana Takes Lead
World Champion D Gukesh had to endure a testing day at the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz, as he could only manage a couple of draws and was handed another defeat, leaving the Indian teenager middling at the 5th place in the 10-man tournament. American Sam Shankland got the better of Gukesh in the fourth round, before the Indian followed it up with a couple of draws against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. Fabiano Caruana, the highest-ranked American in the competition, dramatically took the lead by conceding only one draw and defeating the overnight leader, Levon Aronian, in the final game of the day, securing a two-point lead. Aronian, like Gukesh, managed only two draws and lost one game. With three rounds left in the rapid section, Caruana, scoring 10 points out of a possible 12, appears poised to win this segment, which would give him an advantage in the upcoming blitz section consisting of 18 rounds in a double round-robin format. Aronian remains close behind in second place with eight points, sharing the spot with fellow American Wesley So. Vachier-Lagrave holds fourth place with seven points, while Gukesh shares the next position with Leinier Dominguez Perez, another US import originally from Cuba. Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan and Liem Le Quang from Vietnam share the seventh spot with five points. Two points further back is Grigoriy Oparin, who also switched his federation to the United States. At the bottom is Sam Shankland, who secured the lone win against Gukesh, netting him two points. The Indian ace performed well by winning two consecutive games after losing to Aronian in the opening round, but faced a tougher opponent in the second round. Against Shankland, Gukesh attempted complications that backfired, as the American's tactical skills allowed him to gain a piece through precise calculation in the middle game. Gukesh opted for a draw against Vachier-Lagrave and did not find many opportunities against Abdusattorov, leading to a king-versus-king position after 60 moves. Round 4 Results: Leinier Dominguez Perez (Usa) drew with Levon Aronian (Usa); Sam Shankland (Usa) beat D Gukesh (Ind); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb) beat Grigoriy Oparin (Usa); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra) drew with Liem Le Quang (Vie); Wesley So (Usa) drew with Fabiano Caruana (Usa). Round 5 Results: Gukesh drew with Vachier-Lagrave; Wesley drew with Aronian; Caruana beat Shankland; Liem drew with Abdusattorov; Dominguez drew with Oparin. Round 6 Results: Abdusattorov drew with Gukesh; Caruana beat Aronian; Shankland lost to Vachier-Lagrave; Liem drew with Dominguez; Wesley beat Oparin. Standing after round 6: 1. Caruana (10); 2-3. Aronian, Wesley (8 each); 4. Vachier-Lagrave (7); 5-6. Gukesh, Dominguez (6 each); 7-8: Liem, Abdusattorov (5 each); 9. Oparin (3) 10. Shankland (2).

MS Dhoni's Rs 100 crore defamation case from 2014 will go to trial after a Madras High Court order. Dhoni sued Zee Media and others over defamatory remarks related to the 2013 IPL betting case. MS Dhoni will soon be recording his statement in the defamation case filed by him. Image: Reuters MS Dhoni's Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by him in 2014 is set to go for trial after a Madras High Court order on Monday. The former India captain Dhoni will soon be required to record his statement. The Madras High Court's Justice CV Karthikeyan has also appointed an advocate commissioner for Dhoni's personal appearance in the court, as his presence in the Court could lead to chaos due to his celebrity status. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The defamation case was filed by Dhoni in 2014 when he was still the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He captained CSK last season as well, but as a replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. Why did Dhoni file defamation case? In the defamation case, Dhoni had sought damages of Rs 100 crore from the defendants. The case was filed against Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G Sampath Kumar and News Nation Network. It was filed for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Dhoni about the 2013 Indian Premier League betting case. As a result of the betting scandal, CSK was suspended from the IPL for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. CSK owner N Srinivasan's son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, was also arrested in connection with the betting scandal, but he was later found 'not guilty' by the Mumbai police. Why was the trial delayed by 11 years? As per The Hindu, the trial in Dhoni's defamation case got delayed over 10 years due to 'multiple applications taken out by the parties seeking one relief or another.' The report further added that Dhoni will be available for examination and cross-examination between 20 October and 10 December 2025. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,' Dhoni's affidavit read.
