Padres-Red Sox trade idea lands non-Jarren Duran Boston outfielder

Yahoo4 days ago
The San Diego Padres are expected to be interested in Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. However, there's a chance that the Red Sox won't move on from Duran, and instead, trade someone like Wilyer Abreu.
Abreu has been excellent for the Red Sox this year, and he's only 26 years old, looking like a potential star in this league one day, if his bat ever plays up to the level that everybody knows it can.
Despite the unlikelihood of him being traded, The Athletic recently named him the fifth-best player on the market, noting that the Padres could be a potential fit.

'Abreu, like Duran, could become expendable in Boston thanks to the wave of young bats. But he's also young enough (26) and under team control for long enough (2029) to be part of the Red Sox's long-term plan, putting them in the driver's seat for any potential negotiations.
'Even if the Red Sox are open to trading Abreu, there's no rush to do so now. He's putting up very good numbers at the plate that are in line with his strong rookie showing, and he will be in the mix for a second Gold Glove Award and won't even be arbitration eligible until 2027,' they wrote.
This will likely come down to what the Red Sox do regarding Duran. If they get a better offer for Abreu than Duran, it's possible they could go that route.
However, considering he doesn't have to be traded now and isn't arbitration eligible until 2027, it seems like a better idea to move on from Duran, who is arbitration eligible after this season.

Bristol Motor Speedway game tops 85,000 in ticket sales, will break MLB attendance record

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The Speedway Classic will break Major League Baseball's single-game, regular-season attendance record. The game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves, which will be played Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway, already has sold more than 85,000 tickets. The first American or National League game ever played in Tennessee will eclipse the previous paid attendance record of 84,587, set on Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees. The Speedway Classic will feature pregame pageantry from the U.S. Navy and a ceremonial first pitch between two Hall of Famers: Chipper Jones (Braves) to Johnny Bench (Reds). The game also will include a full day of musical performances, with Tim McGraw, Pitbull and Jake Owen taking the stage for their concerts. ___ AP MLB:

Adam Schefter offers troubling update on Terry McLaurin and Commanders

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was a guest on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday and shared some information about Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders, as well as the reasons why the two sides remain far apart in contract talks. Schefter said McLaurin wants more money than fellow class of 2019 draftee, DK Metcalf, who signed a new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason at an average annual value of $33 million. While the two are from the same draft class, Metcalf is over two years younger. "It's been vast," Schefter said when asked what the separation was between the two sides. "It's up to the two sides to figure out a way to bridge their differences. But I would say that DK Metcalf was the same draft class as Terry McLaurin, he got about $33 million per year, and I wouldn't think that Terry is going to take less than that, and I think he wants considerably more than that. Now, what it comes in at, we'll wind up seeing. Washington, they're not there right now. They love and value Terry McLaurin but they love and value him at a different price. So, these two sides right now seem apart on a deal. They don't seem close today. I don't know how they're going to get that resolved and figured out, but these things usually find a way of working themselves out over time, but as of today, I don't get the sense that anything's close." Some assumed that when McLaurin showed up at camp, the two sides were progressing toward a deal. There is no NFL reporter more plugged-in than Schefter, and he says they remain far apart. If McLaurin is asking for more than Metcalf, "considerably more," perhaps, this may go into the season. While we don't know what Washington is offering, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said last week it was around $27 million. That's a lot of ground to make up. Numbers-wise, McLaurin has a strong case to be paid more. However, most NFL GMs look at the ages of the player over the life of a long-term contract. That's hurting McLaurin here. He's not in the same class as Justin Jefferson, who is averaging $35 million per year. McLaurin's agent has been on the sideline with him over the last two days at Commanders' training camp. Former Florida Gator Jac Caglianone heads to Kansas City Royals' injury list

The Kansas City Royals placed former Florida Gator and outfielder Jac Caglianone on the 10-day injured list on Sunday due to a left hamstring strain. The injury came while Caglianone fielded a double in the right-center gap on Saturday, according to Anne Rogers of He felt the tightness again while running to first on a double play ball and left the game. Hamstrings can be particularly problematic for some, but Caglianone doesn't have much of a lower-body injury history. Caglianone is hoping the recovery time doesn't extend beyond the 10 days, and Royals manager Matt Quatararo described it as a "mild" injury. Since being called up at the beginning of June, Caglianone is slashing .147/.205/.280 with five home runs over 150 at-bats as the everyday right fielder. He's struck out 34 times to just eight walks, signaling a bit of an adjustment period for the Gators' home run king. Remember, a little over a year ago, Caglianone was still wearing the Orange and Blue. A meteoric rise through the minor leagues doesn't guarantee immediate success at the highest level. Getting time to heal and rest could be exactly what he needs. He'll have to find a different defensive spot, though. Kansas City just added Randall Grichuk, who should take over the duties in right field. First base or designated hitter is better for Caglianone's long-term health, anyway.
