Mob violence in Pune's Yavat over 'objectionable' WhatsApp post; youth detained
A motorcycle was set ablaze and a bakery was damaged, the officials said, adding teargas shells had to be lobbed to bring the situation under control amid large mobs taking to the streets to vent their ire.
There is heavy police presence in the village at the moment and peace and order has been restored, these officials said.
The youth, who hails from outside the village, had kept an objectionable Whatsapp post, and he has been detained, Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), told PTI.
"On being alerted, we detained the youth and the process of taking action was underway. However, by then the post went viral, leading to trouble in the village already tense due to some previous incidents. The mob vandalised structures belonging to members of the opposite community hailing from outside," Gill said.
Another official said residents of the village, who are from both communities, are opposed to some persons who are "non-native" and hail from outside the region.
This official said the village was tense recently after the desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a temple.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was in Pune to attend an event, said a youth, who hails from outside, had put up an objectionable post about a Hindu priest raping someone, which angered residents.
"To disperse the mob, police had to resort to lathi charge. The situation in Yavat is now under control and peace prevails. People from both communities are together and efforts are on to defuse tensions. Some persons keep such objectionable posts just to create tension. Strict action will be taken against them. No one has the right to post objectionable content," the CM said.

Extortion threat: Two held for firing at Jagraon jewellery shop
The Ludhiana rural police have arrested two members of a gang who were allegedly involved in firing at a jewellery shop in Jagraon to threaten the owner into paying protection money. The attack, which took place on July 28, was followed by a WhatsApp call to the jeweller demanding ₹20 lakh in extortion, allegedly on behalf of the Gopi Lahoria gang. The Ludhiana rural police have arrested two members of a gang who were allegedly involved in firing at a jewellery shop in Jagraon to threaten the owner into paying protection money. (Representational image) The arrested accused have been identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Ghaddu, a resident of Kothe Baggu village, and Liaquat Ali alias Ali of Agwad Lope, Jagraon. The police recovered a .32 bore revolver, two magazines, and four live cartridges from their possession. According to senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ludhiana rural, Ankur Gupta, the assailants' intention was clearly to intimidate the jeweller into submission. 'This was a calculated act of terror meant to coerce the shop owner into paying extortion money,' he said. The incident took place in broad daylight on July 28 when two masked men arrived on a motorcycle and fired a shot at Kanda Jewellers located at Kamal Chowk. No injuries were reported. However, the threat escalated just hours later when the shop owner, Parminder Singh, received a WhatsApp call from an international number. The caller, identifying himself as a member of the Gopi Lahoria gang, demanded ₹20 lakh and warned of dire consequences if the demand was not met. The police acted swiftly, registering a case under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Teams were deployed to examine CCTV footage from multiple locations across Jagraon. Through detailed investigation, the identities of the accused were established, leading to the arrest of Ghaddu and Ali. The SSP revealed that the arrested duo had conducted recce of the shop and provided logistical support to the main shooters, who are still on the run. 'We have identified five other members of the gang involved in the conspiracy and are actively pursuing leads to nab them,' he added. The police have intensified their crackdown on criminal gangs operating in the region, particularly those using violent means to extort businessmen. 'We want to send a strong message that such criminal tactics will not be tolerated. More arrests will follow soon,' said the SSP.

Punjab VB raids premises of former SAD leader soon after he joins BJP
Mohali: The officials of the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) on Saturday conducted searches at the premises of former Akali leader and prominent realtor Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh and Mohali. However, no official statement regarding the operation was issued by the VB. On the other hand, BJP leader Subhash Sharma defended Gill, criticising the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP govt for "vindictive politics". The searches followed Gill's joining of the BJP on Friday. On Saturday morning, VB sleuths carried out raids at Gill's residence in Chandigarh and his office in Kharar, Mohali. Officials also seized documents from his office for further examination. As the news of the VB raids on Gill's premises spread, the BJP Mohali district team held a protest against the Bhagwant Mann-led government and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner's representative. BJP district president Sanjeev Vashisht alleged that Ranjit Singh Gill, who was being pressured by the Bhagwant Mann government to join the Aam Aadmi Party, decided to join the BJP instead. "Immediately after his decision, the vigilance department raided his premises, which is clearly a politically motivated action," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Salma Hayek, 58,Shows Her Huge Size In New Photos Boite A Scoop Undo Gill recently withdrew from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He was previously known to be a trusted associate of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Gill had contested unsuccessfully from the Kharar Assembly constituency in the 2017 and 2022 Punjab assembly elections. Upon joining the BJP on Friday, Gill expressed support for the party's initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The joining ceremony took place at Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini's residence. Further, Vashisht stated that the BJP strongly condemned such acts of revenge and authoritarian actions. The BJP clarified that such actions would be opposed at every level to protect democracy and justice in Punjab. "The Bhagwant Mann-led government failed on all fronts and is now misusing the vigilance department to intimidate its political opponents, which is extremely dangerous for democracy," said the BJP leader. He stated that the BJP would not be intimidated by such actions. Raid driven by political vendetta: BJP Ashwani Sharma, Punjab BJP's state working president, stated that the AAP had been pressuring Ranjit Singh Gill for the past 15 days to join their party. However, when Gill did not agree and instead joined the BJP – considering phenomenal national development and Punjab's future – the AAP-led Punjab government orchestrated a VB raid against him out of political vendetta. Sharma further claimed that the VB raid occurring within just 12 hours of Gill joining the BJP proved that the AAP now recognized the BJP as its principal political alternative in Punjab for the 2027 elections. Sharma added that CM Mann and the AAP government should remember that Punjabis feared no one. "Punjabis have now realized that the Punjab government is actually run by Delhi leaders Kejriwal and Sisodia, who are looting Punjab," he said. BJP's cultural outreach in Tamil Nadu continues to hit Dravidian roadblock
Modi's act not merely mirrored Emperor Rajendra Chola's achievement — Around 1,000 years ago, the mighty emperor had brought the Ganga water to consecrate Gangaikonda Cholapuram after conquering the Gangetic plains — but was also intended to deliver messages of unity and that Tamil Nadu's glory and its people's identity are deeply rooted in Hindu traditions.
