Punjab VB raids premises of former SAD leader soon after he joins BJP

Time of India14 hours ago
Mohali: The officials of the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) on Saturday conducted searches at the premises of former Akali leader and prominent realtor Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh and Mohali.
However, no official statement regarding the operation was issued by the VB. On the other hand, BJP leader Subhash Sharma defended Gill, criticising the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP govt for "vindictive politics". The searches followed Gill's joining of the BJP on Friday.
On Saturday morning, VB sleuths carried out raids at Gill's residence in Chandigarh and his office in Kharar, Mohali. Officials also seized documents from his office for further examination.
As the news of the VB raids on Gill's premises spread, the BJP Mohali district team held a protest against the Bhagwant Mann-led government and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner's representative. BJP district president Sanjeev Vashisht alleged that Ranjit Singh Gill, who was being pressured by the Bhagwant Mann government to join the Aam Aadmi Party, decided to join the BJP instead. "Immediately after his decision, the vigilance department raided his premises, which is clearly a politically motivated action," he said.

Gill recently withdrew from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He was previously known to be a trusted associate of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Gill had contested unsuccessfully from the Kharar Assembly constituency in the 2017 and 2022 Punjab assembly elections.
Upon joining the BJP on Friday, Gill expressed support for the party's initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The joining ceremony took place at Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini's residence.
Further, Vashisht stated that the BJP strongly condemned such acts of revenge and authoritarian actions. The BJP clarified that such actions would be opposed at every level to protect democracy and justice in Punjab. "The Bhagwant Mann-led government failed on all fronts and is now misusing the vigilance department to intimidate its political opponents, which is extremely dangerous for democracy," said the BJP leader.
He stated that the BJP would not be intimidated by such actions.
Raid driven by political vendetta: BJP
Ashwani Sharma, Punjab BJP's state working president, stated that the AAP had been pressuring Ranjit Singh Gill for the past 15 days to join their party. However, when Gill did not agree and instead joined the BJP – considering phenomenal national development and Punjab's future – the AAP-led Punjab government orchestrated a VB raid against him out of political vendetta.
Sharma further claimed that the VB raid occurring within just 12 hours of Gill joining the BJP proved that the AAP now recognized the BJP as its principal political alternative in Punjab for the 2027 elections.
Sharma added that CM Mann and the AAP government should remember that Punjabis feared no one. "Punjabis have now realized that the Punjab government is actually run by Delhi leaders Kejriwal and Sisodia, who are looting Punjab," he said.

Jitendra Awhad sparks row, says 'Sanatan Dharma ruined India'; BJP MP Medha Kulkarni, Shiv Sena's Shaina NC hit back

Maharashtra: Following NCP-SCP MLA Jitendra Awhad's 'Sanatan Dharma has ruined India,' comment, several political leaders including BJP MP Medha Kulkarni, Shiv Sena's Shaina NC, among others have hit back. 'It has become a trend for the Opposition to criticise Sanatan Dharma... His saying that Sanatan Dharma is a perverted ideology distinct from Hindu Dharma shows you his lack of education, and he is responsible for caste oppression and social exclusion by making such preposterous comments,' Shaina NC told reporters. Jitendra Awhad, on Sunday, made explosive statements claiming that 'there was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma,' and this 'so‑called Sanatan Dharma denied Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation.' 'The followers of this Sanatan Dharma tried to assassinate Jyotirao Phule. They threw cow dung and filth at Savitribai Phule. This very Sanatan Dharma conspired to kill Shahu Maharaj. It did not even allow Dr BR Ambedkar to drink water or attend school. It was Babasaheb Ambedkar who finally rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its oppressive traditions,' news wire ANI quoted the NCP-SCP MLA as saying. Apart from Shaina NC, Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai also hit back at Awhad's comments. 'What Jitendra Awhad said is not acceptable to me. Sanatan Dharma is a distinct ideology that advocates for harmony and tolerance... What he said is totally wrong,' said Desai. BJP leader Ram Kadam said that Jitendra Awhad's comments are based on the MLA's 'incomplete study of the scriptures.' 'The statement by the leader of Sharad Pawar's faction is based on an incomplete study of the scriptures... Are you defaming Sanatan Dharma?... Will you now do this for your politics?... It is unfortunate that he (Jitendra Awhad) is making such statements solely for the politics of appeasement,' said the BJP leader.

BJP's Patra accuses Tejashwi Yadav of spreading misinformation on electoral process

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Sunday accused the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, of spreading misinformation about the electoral process. Speaking at a press conference, BJP's national spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Tejashwi Yadav had cited an incorrect voter ID number and questioned the integrity of the electoral process (ANI) Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, stirred a row by claiming that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls published on Friday after a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission in the poll-bound state. However, the ECI rebutted the claim and termed it 'factually incorrect', while the Opposition leader insisted there was a 'change' in the EPIC number allotted to him. Speaking at a press conference, Patra alleged that Yadav had cited an incorrect voter ID number and questioned the integrity of the electoral process, only for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to later confirm that Yadav remains an enrolled voter with a different and valid EPIC number. 'The booth level officer (BLO) who visited my place did not give me any receipt of the enumeration form that I had filled up. But I had got myself photographed while handing over my enumeration forms to her,' he had said. The Election Commission later clarified that his correct and officially registered EPIC number is RAB0456228—the same as what he had used in his 2020 election affidavit. Referring to Yadav's 2020 election affidavit, Patra said it is a deliberate attempt to discredit constitutional institutions. 'In a fraudulent and misleading manner, this is an attack on the constitutional institutions. This is a conspiracy, an attempt to lower the stature of India,' he said. Patna district magistrate Thiyagarajan asked, adding that since the EPIC number Yadav cited publicly does not match the one in official records, it raises questions about the existence of two different voter ID numbers in his name. The EC has not issued a formal notice to Yadav yet, but has released a copy of the draft electoral rolls showing Yadav's name, photograph, and details at serial number 416.
