Owen Farrell to captain Lions for first time in clash with First Nations & Pasifika XV

The Guardian21-07-2025
Andy Farrell has named his son Owen as captain of the British & Irish Lions for the squad's final midweek fixture against a First Nations and Pasifika XV on Tuesday. Farrell will lead a side containing eight players who were not originally selected for the tour as the management seek to keep most of their first-choice 23 fresh for Saturday's second Test against the Wallabies.
It will be Farrell's 20th appearance in a Lions jersey and the experience he has accrued over four Lions tours has earned him the nod as skipper ahead of his fellow Englishman and recent Lions replacement Jamie George. Farrell will wear 12 in a team which also features the fit-again Blair Kinghorn at full-back and two new arrivals in Jamie Osborne and Darcy Graham at centre and wing respectively.
The bench also contains a number of players bussed in as cover for a fixture that has reignited the debate over whether it dilutes the honour of Lions' representation to call up replacements players primarily on geographical grounds. The Scottish trio of Ewan Ashman, Rory Sutherland and Gregor Brown have been all been named on the bench after being summoned from New Zealand where Scotland have been playing.
The Leinster and Ireland prop Thomas Clarkson is another new face while there is a bench return for Garry Ringrose, ruled out of first Test contention with delayed concussion symptoms. 'This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two Tests,' said Andy Farrell, whose side won the first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday.
'The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection. They have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places, and we want that to continue for the remaining two Tests. This group know the level of performance that we will require against a First Nations [and] Pasifika team that is packed with talent and power.'
The 36-year-old Kurtley Beale will captain a First Nations & Pasifika XV which also contains Taniela Tupou and Filipo Daugunu, both released from the Wallabies squad for the fixture by head coach Joe Schmidt.
The ex-Wallaby forward Pete Samu will not feature, however, because he did not fulfil the strict criteria in the tour agreement that all players involved should have been involved in this season's Super Rugby competition. Samu helped Bordeaux win this year's Champions Cup and has returned home to join the Waratahs but the Lions management declined to make an exception for him.
Toutai Kefu, the First Nations & Pasifika head coach, is nevertheless hopeful that his side will be competitive. 'The team has a really nice feel to it, with a blend of not only youth and experience, but also cultures,' he said. 'The Lions have shown how strong they are on this tour ... but we're not here to make up the numbers. We want to win this game and make history.'

Bayern v Tottenham live: Spurs face latest Kane reunion in friendly after massive injury blow

Tottenham Hotspur ramp up preparations for the new Premier League campaign with a pre-season friendly against former striker and club legend Harry Kane 's Bayern Munich. Spurs are building momentum under new manager Thomas Frank, with Burnley at home to open up the campaign next Saturday. Frank suffered a major blow when James Maddison went down in a friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, with tests confirming an ACL injury, which will likely keep him out for more than six months. Spurs have also waved goodbye to another club legend in Son Heung Min, who has joined LAFC in a record-breaking MLS move. Chairman Daniel Levy hailed Frank's ability on Gary Neville's ' The Overlap', stating: 'Thomas is a highly intelligent individual, a fantastic way about him in terms of communication. He gets the style of football we want to play.' Thomas Frank outlines Spurs ambitions "I'm very clear on the principles on every phase of the game. I want us to be brave and very aggressive. I also want to attack," Frank says. "Brave is absolutely linked [with] 'To dare is to do'. If you are not brave, it is difficult to achieve anything. Brave is crucial. The aggressivity is crucial if you want to win or achieve something. And you need to attack." Son has officially ended his 10-year stay at Spurs, where he scored 173 goals in 454 appearances and led the team to Europa League glory in May. After an agreement between Tottenham and LAFC was struck for a deal in excess of £20million, the 33-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday and a day later he has finalised his transfer, which is the highest fee paid by an MLS club for a player. Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Tottenham Hotspur travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich in their final friendly of pre-season today, as Thomas Frank puts his finishing touches on preparations for the 2025/26 season. The Dane has enjoyed a mixed start to life at his new club, with the signing of Mohammed Kudus followed by controversy over Morgan Gibbs-White and then a lack of notable activity in the market. However, his results in pre-season have produced positive performances, and today is the last match before the season 'begins' with the Uefa Super Cup match against PSG in Udine next week. While the Super Cup remains a friendly of sorts, it still marks a chance for another trophy and the perfect start for Frank, with the Dane looking to hit the ground running in the Premier League too come 16 August. Premier League players will CONTINUE to take the knee before selected games in upcoming season - despite the Lionesses stopping the anti-racism gesture

Premier League players will continue to take the knee prior to selected games in the 2025-26 season. The decision was made following a meeting involving top-flight club captains this week, according to a report from The Telegraph. Unlike previous campaigns however, players will only perform the gesture on two selected fixtures during October's Black History Month. The gesture, which is said to demonstrate clubs' 'commitment to fight racism and all forms of discrimination' was initially introduced in the summer of 2020 following a request from players. For two full seasons it was performed prior to every Premier League game in England. The number of games was later reduced, and last season players took the knee in the opening and final match rounds of the season, in addition to fixtures dedicated to the No Room For Racism campaign in October and April. It was later adopted by both England men's and women's senior teams as well as clubs from across the football league, though most have since dropped the gesture. In July the Lionesses announced they would no longer be taking the knee prior to games following abhorrent racist abuse directed towards Jess Carter during their semi-final win over Sweden. 'We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism.' The team said in a statement. 'No one should have to endure such vile abuse, be that in football or any walk of life. 'Representing our country is the greatest honour. It is not right that while we are doing that some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin. 'Until now we have chosen to take the knee before matches. It's clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism. We have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday. 'We hope the game can come together to see what more can be done. For now, we will return our total focus to an important semi-final.'
