Something big may or may not be in the works for the Carolina Panthers.
On Wednesday's episode of the Raw Room podcast, special teams assistant Daren Bates was asked about the Panthers' progress through this point of the offseason. The second-year coach offered up his thoughts on some of the organization's transactions as well as what the team is up to in their early workout sessions.
When talking about building the roster with their new additions, however, Bates may have nearly offered up a tad too much.

What could that unknown information possibly be?
The theory most Panthers fans may rush to might involve three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who is seemingly on the outs with the Miami Dolphins. Ramsey appears likely to be traded in the coming weeks, and raised some eyebrows with his recent praise of Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Or perhaps Bates was thinking about another kind of defensive back. The Panthers should still be in the market for a starting safety, and have already met with free agents Julian Blackmon and Marcus Williams earlier this spring.
Or, maybe it's not even a big move at all. Only Bates, and obviously a select few, would know.
But whatever that information is, we may be very close to finding it out.

The Florida Panthers will be without one of their regulars for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. Forward A.J. Greer is out as he continues to deal with an undisclosed injury. Jesper Boqvist will take his place in the lineup as the left wing on Florida's fourth line with Tomas Nosek at center and Jonah Gadjovich on the right wing. Greer had been banged up for most of the Panthers' Eastern Conference final series against the Carolina Hurricanes, which Florida won in five games. He missed the final 4:02 of Game 3 after appearing to tighten something up late in that game, a 6-2 Florida win. He did not play at all in Game 4 and then exited the Panthers' 5-3 series-clinching win in Game 5 early in the third period, not taking the ice for the final 18:35 of the contest. Through 12 postseason games, Greer has three points (two goals, one assist) in addition to logging 45 hits while averaging just 7:47 of ice time. This is the third time in the past nine playoff games that Boqvist will draw into the lineup for an injured teammate. He did so in Games 5 and 6 of the second round against the Toronto Maple Leafs when Evan Rodrigues was sidelined and again in Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference final for Sam Reinhart. In those four games, Boqvist produced five points (two goals, three assists). But the Panthers are no strangers to mixing and matching with their lineup, especially with their fourth line. 'Just good hockey players, guys who can step in and step up when we need them to,' Rodrigues said. 'High hockey IQ guys too that can play all over the lineup that can do multiple roles. As the Stanley Cup Final gets set to begin tonight, it may feel like everyone outside of Florida is pulling for Connor McDavid to finally win his first cup and cement his legacy as one of the greatest players ever. However, don't count the sportsbook among those pulling for McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. It's not simply that Edmonton is a slim favorite to win the series, with 54% of tickets at BetMGM and 59% of money on an Oilers victory. It's also that an Oilers win would likely strengthen McDavid's case to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, which he's already a +100 favorite to win. Last week, McDavid was the second-biggest liability to win the award at BetMGM. With Mikko Rantanen now out of the race, the book is completely against McDavid -- though it doesn't want to see Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky (+250) win either. 'BetMGM is pulling for the Panthers in a Stanley Cup Finals rematch," BetMGM senior trader Matthew Rasp said in an email. "The Oilers have been a losing result for us all season, and we hope anyone besides Connor McDavid or Sergei Bobrovsky wins the Conn Smythe trophy.' As we saw last year, a Florida win doesn't necessarily mean McDavid won't still win the Conn Smythe, but it does give someone like Bobrovsky or Aleksander Barkov (+500) a better chance considering the roles they'd likely play in a potential Panthers triumph. After those three, Leon Draisaitl (+700) and Matthew Tkachuk (+2500) have the next best odds for the award. Edmonton is a -130 favorite on the moneyline for Game 1. McDavid to score a goal is the most popular prop at BetMGM. Did someone say Panthers? From the Florida Panthers to the Carolina Panthers. Only one of these teams has been a championship contender recently, but what if I told you that's about to change in 2025? What if I told you the Carolina cats are about to rise back to prominence -- and make it to the Super Bowl? Are you belly laughing yet? Yeah, I'll admit the thought of it was pretty funny to me too, but one eerie, totally not coincidental trend does make a convincing argument -- if you're prone to root for the Panthers -- that maybe just maybe Bryce Young has a chance to do something special this year. Kennedy Gengler shakes off error with winning double as Oswego tops upset-minded Yorkville. ‘Everything clicked.'
Oswego's Kennedy Gengler gets it. The junior shortstop understands she can learn from a mistake. Sometimes, however, it's wise to just let it go and move on. It works for Gengler, who's been proving in her first year on varsity that Panthers co-coach Annie Scaramuzzi has a good eye for talent. 'She does so good at practice,' Scaramuzzi said of Gengler. 'She hits good pitching well. It's one of the things that made me take note of her. She took one swing at tryouts off Jaelynn Anthony when we were throwing live and I knew then I wanted her here because she hits fast pitching well. 'You knew she was going to have competitive at-bats.' Gengler did Tuesday in a Class 4A Oswego Sectional semifinal, delivering the winning hit with a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning for a 3-2 victory over conference rival Yorkville. It allowed Gengler to atone for a throwing error in the second inning that produced two unearned runs for the fourth-seeded Foxes (24-13), who almost rode a wild pitching plan to a big upset. 'I was thinking, 'I'm the right person at the right time,'' Gengler said. 'I was definitely nervous, but I knew I had to let go of my nervousness to produce a hit. I just calmed myself down and thought, 'I got it.' 'I cleared my mind and everything clicked.' The top-seeded Panthers (34-2) advance to the 4 p.m. Friday sectional final against the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between Wheaton North (23-8) and Wheaton Warrenville South (21-10). Oswego's power-packed lineup struggled through five innings as Yorkville coach Jory Regnier used three pitchers multiple times, making seven pitching changes involving senior starter Peyton Levine and relievers junior Ellie Fox and freshman Bella Rosauer. 'We trust all three and they're all just a little bit different,' Regnier said of the plan devolped with pitching coach Megan Leadbetter after losing twice in the regular season to Oswego by scores of 6-2 and 5-1. 'Facing such a strong lineup, we had to give them something they hadn't seen yet. 'We were trying to keep them off balance and keep their hitters at bay and never getting into any type of rhythm.' Levine and Fox had three stints each in the circle and faced eight batters apiece. Rosauer was called on twice and pitched to 11 batters. And it nearly worked. 'Honestly, for a second there, I thought we were cooked,' said senior catcher Kiyah Chavez, the Iowa recruit who went 0-for-3. 'I'm incredibly proud of (Gengler). That's a helluva way to pick yourself up after an error. I can have an off day and the bottom of our lineup is going to pick me up. 'Hats off to their coach. I'm sure she watched a lot of film to break down which pitcher would be best against which girl in our lineup.' Scaramuzzi expected to see all three Yorkville pitchers. 'We didn't expect it to go like that, though,' she said. 'I thought our girls did a great job of making the adjustment, pitcher to pitcher.' Senior designated player Sabrina Zamora came through with an RBI double one batter before Gengler to get Oswego on the board and Anthony threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts. 'Sabrina and Kennedy and the bottom of our lineup coming in clutch,' Scaramuzzi said. 'That was the difference.' On top of that, Gengler also is a catcher in travel. 'Gengler is probably the strongest arm on the team,' Chavez said. 'My throwdowns are fast because I have a good transfer. Her ball gets there because it moves fast.' Both have cannon-like arms, according to Scaramuzzi. 'Kennedy, having her arm at short is a difference-maker,' Scaramuzzi said. 'She can go in the hole and still throw batters out.'
