Chiefs' Chris Jones voted top interior defensive lineman by AP panel
While Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have carried the offense, Jones has done the same on the defensive end for the Chiefs with his knack of creating pressure at key moments playing a crucial role in Kansas City's success.
That helped Jones win the honor of being voted the top interior defensive lineman in the league by The Associated Press.
A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at interior defensive line, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.
Jones got seven of the eight first-place votes to go with one second to win the voting easily. Two other players were on all eight ballots with Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants getting the other first-place vote to come in second and Philadelphia's Jalen Carter finishing third.
Pittsburgh's Cam Heyward finished fourth and Quinnen Williams of the Jets came in fifth.
Seattle's Leonard Williams, Tennessee's Jeffery Simmons, Denver's Zach Allen and Carolina's Derrick Brown also received votes.
1. CHRIS JONES, Kansas City Chiefs
Jones' sack total of five last season was his lowest since his rookie season in 2016 but he still earned his third straight All-Pro selection after finishing second among all interior defensive linemen with 74 pressures in the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus. Jones' 72 sacks over the past seven seasons rank tied for fifth overall in that span and tied with Aaron Donald for the most among interior linemen.
2. DEXTER LAWRENCE, New York Giants
While most of the other players who got votes at interior defensive line are '3 technique' tackles who line up on the outside shoulder of the guards, Lawrence mostly plays nose tackle directly over the center. Those players are typically run stoppers since it is easier to double-team them in the pass game but Lawrence thrives at both. He had a career-high nine sacks in 12 games last season and his 103 pressures when lined up as a nose tackle the past three seasons are 80 more than any other player, according to PFF.
3. JALEN CARTER, Philadelphia Eagles
Carter was the anchor of Philadelphia's Super Bowl-winning defense last season. He has 10 1/2 sacks and 102 total pressures in the regular season in his first two years, according to PFF, and helps free up the edge rushers for the Eagles because he warrants so many double teams.
4. CAM HEYWARD, Pittsburgh Steelers
Heyward has shown no signs of aging as heads into this season at age 36. He had eight sacks last season when he earned his fourth first-team All-Pro selection. He has 63 1/2 sacks and 91 tackles for loss in the past eight seasons, earning Pro Bowl bids in seven of them.
5. QUINNEN WILLIAMS, New York Jets
Williams' production dipped last season as the Jets' defense struggled overall but he has been a consistent performer since being drafted third overall in 2019. He still has 176 pressures and 23 1/2 sacks the past three seasons.

Lakers jersey history No. 00 — Benoit Benjamin
Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. We will now take a look at Benoit Benjamin, a center who had a brief stint with the Purple and Gold. Benjamin had a reasonably successful three-year stint at Creighton University, where he averaged 21.5 points and 14.1 rebounds as a junior. He was the No. 3 pick in the 1985 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, and the seven-footer initially showed some promise. In his fourth season in the NBA, he registered 16.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. However, that would be his peak, and he would soon be called a draft bust. He was often accused of lacking dedication and a positive attitude, and in 1988, Dick Vitale, the well-known basketball color commentator, went off on Benjamin. 'He has a double zero on his back, but he should add another zero. I give him a zero for his offensive attitude, a zero for his defensive attitude, and a zero for his mental attitude … he's an absolute, flat-out disgrace to everyone that's ever worn a basketball uniform.' Benjamin was traded to the Lakers midway through the 1992-93 season, along with rookie wing Doug Christie, for Sam Perkins. The trade came shortly after Magic Johnson's second retirement, and then-Lakers general manager Jerry West didn't necessarily make the deal to improve the team — he did it to trigger a long-term rebuilding project and get out of Perkins' big contract. Benjamin did little of note with the Lakers. In 28 regular-season games with them, he mustered just 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 10.9 minutes a game. They ended up trading him in June 1993 to the New Jersey Nets for Sam Bowie, another once-heralded center who turned into a bust, and a future second-round draft pick. He would spend seven more seasons, most of which were unproductive, before his NBA career ended. He did return to the Lakers as a free agent in September 1999, but they waived him a month later, and he didn't appear in any regular-season games for them that year. MLS, playing without Messi, beats Liga MX 3-1 in All-Star Game
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Sam Surridge, Tai Baribo and Brian White scored goals and Major League Soccer defeated Liga MX of Mexico 3-1 in the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night. Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammate, Jordi Alba, both face possible league suspensions for their team's next match against Cincinnati on Saturday for missing the All-Star game. Liga MX's James Rodríguez also chose not to play in the game played in front of more than 20,000 fans at Q2 Stadium. MLS has defeated Liga MX three times in four tries. Last year Liga MX won 4-1 in Columbus, Ohio. The MLS All-Stars won in 2022 and beat Liga MX on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw a year prior. Messi has yet to appear in an MLS All-Star Game. He missed the game last year with an injury. Messi is tied with Nashville's Surridge for the MLS lead in goals with 18. Surridge scored another goal on Wednesday, from the middle of the box, heading in to the lower right corner a ball directed by LAFC's Denis Bouanga in the 28th minute. The opportunity developed after Bouanga had a point-blank attempt stopped by Liga MX goalkeeper Luis Malagon (Club America). Bouanga hustled to retrieve the long rebound and sent it to Surridge. Before the goal, both teams had attempts rejected with diving stops by Luis Malagón and Austin FC's Brad Stuver in the 13th and 18th minutes. MLS went ahead 2-0 in the 51st minute when Diego Rossi (Columbus) passed ahead to Baribo (Philadelphia), whose right footed shot from the center of the box made it to the lower left corner of the goal. Liga MX closed the gap to 2-1 just 13 minutes later when Gilberto Mora (Club Tijuana) converted a pass from Elias Montiel (Pachuca) from the middle of the box. Liga MX's bid to tie the match was snubbed when a shot by Diber Cambindo (Necaxa) was stopped by Yohei Takaoka (Vancouver) in the 75th minute. White (Vancouver) finished the scoring in the 80th minute. Up next MLS and Liga MX continue their rivalry with the Leagues Cup that begins on July 29 and concludes Aug. 31. The competition features a new format, with all 18 clubs from Liga MX and the top 18 from MLS competing. Rays option Taj Bradley to Triple-A Durham after poor start
TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-hander Taj Bradley to Triple-A Durham following his poor start in Wednesday night's 11-9 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Once a top pitching prospect, the 24-year-old Bradley was handed a 4-0 lead after the first inning against the last-place White Sox (37-66). But he couldn't get through the second, allowing four runs, four hits and three walks.
