Sikh charity leader recognised for selfless service

Yahoo15-07-2025
The leader of a Birmingham-based Sikh charity has been recognised for his dedication to selfless service at an event in Parliament.
Bhai Sahib, Professor Mohinder Singh, spiritual leader of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha and chairman of the Nishkam Group of Charitable Organisations, has helped a variety of sectors grow across the UK and around the world.
Bhai Sahib Ji was presented with the award "In recognition of his lifelong selfless service to the community" by British Sikh parliamentarians on Monday night.
Rooted in Sikh principles, the charity has focused on interfaith dialogue and transformative community work in education, healthcare, heritage, and global humanitarian aid.
Labour MP Jas Athwal called Bhai Sahib Ji a "true embodiment of humility, leadership and service".
Speaking in Parliament, Bhai Sahib Ji said: "I am greatly overwhelmed and embarrassed to take any credit for what I have managed to do in my life.
"As Sikhs, we are lovingly advised to adopt the following strategy for spiritual and worldly success.
"Pray, work, share. To serve selflessly, sing, listen to and absorb divine praise.
"In a way we become what we serve. To serve the creator through serving creation is the path to living in God's image when done in tandem with prayer and devotion."
Volunteers spoke of Bhai Sahib Ji's service, namely the creation of the peace charter for forgiveness and reconciliation in 2019, which promotes clemency as a way to pave the way for global peace.
A trustee of the charity said: "We are celebrating 30 years, but it is not 30 years; it is a lifelong dedication."
And added that "the whole foundation is built around humility".
The Sikh charity has its headquarters in Birmingham and operates in cities across the UK, in India and in Kenya.
In Handsworth, West Midlands, the charity helped regenerate 13 acres of inner-city land.
The launch of Zero Hunger and Nishkam SWAT (Sikh Welfare and Awareness Team) has fed thousands and is continuing to do so.
Bhai Sahib Ji is the first Sikh to be awarded a Papal Knighthood of St Gregory the Great, which is usually reserved for Catholics, honouring his interfaith work.
A volunteer described him as a reminder to "uplift and to unite", while he inspires others to "live truer and serve" through honouring the legacy of the Sikh Gurus.

South Africa's Ramaphosa Axes Education Minister

Live on Bloomberg TV CC-Transcript 00:00So another government shake up. Just give us the backdrop to what led to the firing of the Education Minister, I mean, many analysts that we've been speaking to are saying that this is a sign that a coalition government is working in action, as you were mentioning. Yes. This is the second government shakeup that we've seen in the past few weeks by President Ramaphosa. The significance here, though, is that what we were seeing from opposition parties within this coalition government is that they were threatening to hold up any sort of budgetary movement and approval of budgets moving forward if they in their words, if they don't see the removal of some parliament parliamentary members who they deem as corrupt and compromise removed. And so, yes, that is what we saw earlier this week from President Ramaphosa, the Education Minister. She faced allegations of corruption and potentially accusations that she misled Parliament. Now, with her removal, we haven't really heard from the ANC or from President Ramaphosa why exactly she was removed. But we are hearing from opposition coalition members who are saying that they are pleased with this and now they can move forward with the next steps of approval, but saying at the same time in the same breath that they're not going to stop going after other officials who they deem within the ANC party as being, in their words, compromised. And as you were mentioning, yes, this opens the door to budgetary approval later today. We were waiting for the appropriations bill. Really, it's the final nail in the coffin of this budget impasse that we've been seeing over the past few months is finally going to get a vote later today, hopefully then easing tensions within the coalition government, potentially. Then for investors, it's giving them a bit of relief that, yes, the coalition government is working and potentially there is more accountability that we are seeing within the government. The ANC, though, again, for their part, are saying that the removal of the education minister has nothing to do with the DA and some of the threats that they heard there. But you do have to wonder whether or not investor sentiment and really this hold up of this budget that we've been waiting for for the past five months had anything to do with at least the removal of the education minister and moving things forward here.

Police attend protest outside London hotel which 'will be housing asylum seekers'

Metropolitan Police officers attended the scene of a protest outside a hotel in east London where asylum seekers will reportedly be held. The protest took place on Tuesday outside the four-star Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, which the government intends to use as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers, according to Tower Hamlets Council. A police statement from last night said: "Officers are currently in attendance at a protest outside a hotel in Canary Wharf. "We have a policing plan in place and will continue to monitor events." A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council said: "We are aware of the government's decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers. "It is important that the government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel. "We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place." There have been a series of demonstrations outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, since asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with sexual assault after an incident earlier this month in which he is alleged to have attempted to kiss a 14-year-old girl. Kebatu denied the charge when he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Thursday. Four men have been charged with violent disorder after the protests outside the hotel in Essex, which is believed to be housing asylum seekers, police say.

India, UK to sign free trade deal during Modi's visit, cut tariffs on whisky, garments

By Manoj Kumar and Alistair Smout NEW DELHI/LONDON (Reuters) - India and Britain will sign a free trade agreement on Thursday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit, officials said, with New Delhi to ease tariffs on British whisky, cars and some food items, and the UK offering duty-free access to Indian textiles and electric vehicles. The pact, concluded in May after three years of stop-start talks, should boost bilateral trade by removing numerous barriers and granting each country greater market access to the other. It will take effect after the British parliament and India's federal cabinet approve it, likely within a year. "This is a significant agreement," Vikram Misri, India's foreign secretary, told reporters on Tuesday, adding that legal vetting of the deal was near completion ahead of Modi's four-day trip to the UK and Maldives. Trade minister Piyush Goyal will accompany Modi for the formal signing, a commerce ministry official said. This will be Modi's fourth visit to the UK since he took office in 2014. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss trade, energy, security, health and education issues, and also hold talks with business leaders. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $55 billion in 2023/24, while the UK has become India's sixth-largest investor, with cumulative investments of nearly $36 billion, Misri said. Around 1,000 Indian companies operate in the UK, employing 100,000 people, and they have invested about $20 billion there, he added. Under the trade agreement, tariffs on Scotch whisky will drop to 75% from 150% immediately, and then slide to 40% over the next decade, according to the British government, and on cars, India will cut duties to 10% from 100% under a quota system that will be gradually liberalised. In return, Indian manufacturers are expected to gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles, also under a quota system, Indian commerce ministry officials said. The ministry has said 99% of Indian exports to Britain would benefit from zero duties under the deal, including textiles, while Britain will see reductions on 90% of its tariff lines. "The UK is an important market for Indian exporters," said Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, adding that the trade pact will boost bilateral trade and provide access for Indian sectors such as textiles, footwear, marine and engineering products.
