While
Rekha
is known for a long list of iconic movies like 'Umrao Jaan', 'Khoobsurat', 'Silsila' and many more, 'Khoon Bhari Maang' also remains in her best work list. The actress broke stereotypes around actresses with the role and during those days, female-oriented scripts hardly existed.
Kabir Bedi
was Rekha's co-star in the film and in a recent interview, he has opened up on working with the legendary actress.
The film was directed by
Rakesh Roshan
. Talking about how he came on board, Bedi said during a chat with Siddharth Kannan, 'Khoon Bhari Maang is the film I am most known for, it's the most remembered. The film was a superhit. I was shooting for another series, called Magnum PI, in Hawaii when I received a call from Rakesh Roshan.
He offered me the role of a hero in his film, and I asked why he chose me for it. Then he told me that the hero becomes the villain in the movie, and no other hero was willing to do this.
He also shared that starring another villain would have no surprise element, which is why he told me only I could play hero and a villain.'
He further added, 'The minute he told me Rehka was the heroine, I said yes. Back then, it was a huge honor working with her.
She had won some awards for Umrao Jaan and was a brilliant actor, so I re-routed my schedule in Hawaii and came to shoot here. Rekha made that film what it is; she was the heart and soul of Khoon Bhari Maang. The film made a big impression on people. And I didn't want to lose the opportunity of working with Rekha.
'
Talking about how Rekha is as a person and how he bonded with her, Kabir added, 'We had mutual respect for one another. She is a private person; she guards her privacy. She is a very sensitive girl who is afraid of being hurt, so she protects herself, and I respect that. Even today, we meet very nicely, I embrace her, like her, but it was never like we sat down together and had lots of evenings talking about life. We would meet on set, speak there, but no great socializing after work.

Vidya Balan says Rekha is ‘desire incarnate': ‘I think she was made for the celluloid'

Actor Vidya Balan, known for her commanding screen presence and fearless authenticity, recently opened up about watching Umrao Jaan with veteran actor Rekha, describing it as a 'surreal experience'. Vidya also praised Rekha's performance in the film, saying 'she was made for the celluloid.' In an interview with THR India, the actor said, 'I just wanted to rewatch certain films that I saw as an actor, just to see how they have aged and what my perception would be now. Last night I watched Umrao Jaan with Rekha holding my hand, and at some points in the film, I would just stare back at her with shock and think, 'Really?' It was just a surreal experience, because on the other side I had Shabana Azmi, whose mother, Shaukat Kaifi, is also in the film.' I think she was made for the celluloid; if there is one person who was, it's her. There is no word to describe her, because she is just so above anything you could say. I think she is desire incarnate; that's what she exudes in every frame.' Vidya added that the reason for going back to old films was because she was tired of watching series, which had too much violence, and she just wanted to see something which made her believe that there is still good in the world.
