
I'm a TV expert and I'm tired of the 'brightness war' — here's why it's overblown
While it's true that brighter TVs tend to be higher-end models, one TV being brighter than another doesn't necessarily make it a better pick.
It's easy to get swept up in the brightness wars. After all, brightness is a basic concept that most people understand, and having numbers to go with it adds a simple shorthand when comparing the best TVs from major brands.
But folks that cover the industry — myself included — could do a better job talking about brightness, because while it's an important factor of TV performance, it's not the only factor. Here's why.
A TV's peak brightness is most important for viewers whose living spaces are naturally bright — especially those who do most of their viewing during the day.
Naturally, this is because the TV needs to compete with ambient light in order for the picture to retain its pop.
And, when we use the word 'pop,' what we're really talking about is contrast. It's one of the cornerstones of picture quality, and understanding why is the first step in demystifying brightness's role in a TV's performance.

Contrast is the main ingredient in a visually appealing picture.
Contrast describes the difference between the darkest parts of the picture and the brightest. A high-contrast picture delivers more depth, adding to realism. It's the main ingredient in a visually appealing picture.
A TV that gets super bright, therefore, has a distinct advantage over a dimmer model. Its picture will hold up better during the day and it'll probably deliver a more cinematic presentation with the lights off.
Take the Hisense U8QG. It's one of the brightest TVs I've ever seen. We clocked its peak highlight brightness at around 4,000 nits.That's higher than the roughly 2,700 nits of brightness you'll find on the Sony Bravia 9, a rival Mini-LED TV that costs around $1,500 more than the U8QG, and much higher than the 700-nit display of TCL's entry-level QM6K Mini-LED TV.
The brand-new Hisense U8QG is one of the brightest TVs we've tested this year, and the 55-inch version is already seeing massive discounts. It's one of Hisense's top TVs of 2025, and I highly recommend checking it out if you're looking to save some money on a high-performing Mini-LED TV.
Unsurprisingly, I find that the Hisense U8QG is a better-performing TV than the low-end QM6K (and not just because it's several times brighter). What might surprise you, though, is that I find the Bravia 9 to be an overall better-looking TV than the U8QG despite its lower HDR brightness.
This is because I find the Bravia 9's overall presentation to be better suited to my preferences. Both sets offer fantastic backlight control and a punchy, high-contrast picture, but Sony's superb processing and surgically accurate Professional picture mode make the Bravia 9 a better pick for my living room.
The Bravia 9, Sony's flagship Mini-LED TV, doesn't get quite as bright as other TVs in its class, but for my money, it's the best Mini-LED TV for A/V enthusiasts who value a finely tuned, cinematic picture above all else.
In addition, you might not even notice a difference in brightness between these two Mini-LED TVs. A jump from 700 to 2,700 nits is significant — less so from 2,700 to 4,000. So, while it's certainly nice for the U8QG to have all of that horsepower under the hood, there are limits to its perks.
Until now, we've been examining brightness by way of LED displays, which lack the built-in benefits of OLED.
All OLED displays — from the entry-level models to the best OLED TVs in the world — leverage self-lit pixels in lieu of LED backlights.
Because their pixels can turn themselves on and off independently, OLEDs are the king of contrast. They offer perfect black levels and razor-sharp contrast control.
As you might expect, this has a tremendous impact on picture quality. Namely, OLED TVs don't have to get as bright as LED TVs in order for our eyes to perceive them as being that bright.
In other words, 800 nits of highlight brightness on an OLED TV looks much brighter than 800 nits on an LED TV, and it's all thanks to OLED's ability to get consistently darker.This is one of the reasons why sensibly priced, entry-level OLED TVs — like the LG B4 — tend to be much better performers than the numbers would indicate.
The B4 is one of the most affordable LG OLEDs you can buy. Its relatively limited brightness is less of potential issue thanks to the self-emissive nature of OLED displays, but if you have a brighter-than-average living space during the day, you might want to spring for a brighter display.
This also explains why top-shelf, flagship OLED TVs — like the Samsung S95F — benefit more from their sensational highlight brightness. In the case of the S95F, its 2,000-nit highlight brightness is what gives its picture a level of realism that's tough to replicate on a non-OLED display.
But before you write off Mini-LED TVs completely, it's worth underscoring their primary benefit over OLED TVs: full-screen brightness.
Until now, we've been discussing peak highlight brightness, which describes small, concentrated areas of the picture, like the shimmer along the edge of a samurai sword or dapples of sunlight on the ocean's surface.This is an altogether different measurement than how bright the entire picture is capable of getting. This is where ultra-bright Mini-LED TVs (like the aforementioned U8QG and Bravia 9) really shine.
The vast majority of Mini-LED TVs demonstrate a higher average picture brightness across most content types.
Even though the Samsung S95F OLED cracks the 2,000-nit marker and lands relatively closely to the Bravia 9's 2,700-nit notch, the Bravia 9 pumps out a much higher average picture brightness in HDR. In many ways, it's just as impressive as the S95F, but it's impressive in an altogether different way than Samsung's OLED.
Yes, OLED TVs are getting brighter. In some cases, their highlights are even brighter than those of high-end Mini-LED TVs.
But for the time being, the vast majority of Mini-LED TVs — particularly those in the mid-range-to-high-end price range — demonstrate a higher average picture brightness across most content types.
Now that you have a better understanding of one of the primary differences between Mini-LED and OLED TVs, you are better equipped to shop for a new TV with confidence.
Ultimately, here's what I suggest: If you're concerned about the amount of ambient light your next TV will have to compete with during daytime viewing, Mini-LED TVs are probably going to be better candidates for the job.
That said, high-end OLED TVs like the Samsung S95F are fantastic at delivering a high-contrast, ultra-realistic picture. Top-tier Mini-LED TVs (like the Bravia 9) come remarkably close to achieving the same presentation, but the "OLED look" is still in a league of its own.
If you're still on the fence, take a trip to your local brick-and-mortar shop and peep the differences in person.
Whatever you do, don't treat peak brightness as the be-all, end-all performance metric. You can learn a lot about a TV from this measurement, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Samsung to launch 115-inch Neo QLED TV that dwarfs the biggest OLEDs
Samsung is adding to its line-up of oversized displays with the new 115-inch QN90F Neo QLED TV that's available starting today on Samsung's website for… well… a lot. At launch, this super-sized TV will cost $26,999, which is strange considering that's nearly as much as Samsung's recently unveiled 115-inch RGB MicroLED TV that costs $30,000. Back in April we did our Samsung QN90F hands-on review with a 65-inch version of this set, and we came away impressed with its bright picture and local dimming performance. You also get full HDMI 2.1 support in an elegant design. However, we thought some of the AI-features felt half-baked and that the color volume was a bit lackluster. Despite a number of picture-enhancing technologies, it's not exactly clear how the supersized Neo QLED TV is supposed to compete with its MicroLED stablemate — unless Samsung has plans to cut its price significantly in November for Black Friday. At 115 inches corner-to-corner, the new QN90F is larger than any consumer OLED TV — but it now feels par for the course for QLED TVs put out by Samsung and Hisense. According to the press release sent to Tom's Guide, the 115-inch Samsung QN90F Neo QLED TV will use the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor (the same one found in last year's Samsung QN900D 8K TV) that has access to Supersize Picture Enhancer, an upscaling technology that helps reduce noise on larger screens. To help mitigate glare — a huge problem for TVs this size — Samsung is equipping the QN90F with Glare Free technology, a technology that has worked exceedingly well in its QD–OLED TVs, the 2025 S95F OLED and the 2024 S95D OLED. For enhanced contrast and color, the QN90F will use a combination of its Neo Quantum HDR Pro and Plus, Quantum Matrix Technology Pro technology. All these technologies sound great on paper, but I'm not sure any Neo QLED TV will be able to compete with Samsung's new RGB MicroLED TVs. Despite maxing out at 97 inches, OLED TVs are still some of the best TVs on the market thanks to their self-emissive pixels. Neo QLED TVs for their many tricks still require a backlight. RGB MicroLED is the latest and greatest LED technology and while it's not quite self-emissive in the same way OLED TVs are, it uses red-, green- and blue-colored LEDs — each of which are less than 1/10th of a millimeter. These MicroLEDs are good for two things: light and color. While we've yet to test them in our own labs, Samsung claims that these TVs can cover 100% of the BT.2020 color gamut, making them far more vibrant than even the most colorful OLED and Mini-LED TVs. Given how the MicroLEDs are clustered, they're expected to get much brighter than traditional Mini-LED and OLED TVs, too. I'm saying all this because at $27,000, the new QN90F doesn't feel like a screaming deal considering that an equivalent-sized RBG MicroLED is just $3,000 more. However, if Samsung's plan is to launch at $27,000 and then cut that in half for Black Friday, then I understand why it's priced the way it is. Samsung now has a massive 115-inch Neo QLED TV and yeah, it costs a lot
What's happened? Samsung has a new Neo QLED TV size, and it's the biggest the company has ever made. Samsung's stunning 4K QN90F series was already available in a range of sizes, but it topped out at 98 inches And 98 inches is just pathetically small, right? So it's no surprise there's now a 115-inch version. Jokes aside, it provides Samsung with another tool in its arsenal to take on the likes of Hisense's new mega 116-inch TV. The QN90F is already one of the best QLED TVs you can buy, so a new size furthers is versatility. Plus, it powers the firm's 'Supersize Picture Enhancer' feature, which is tasked with making sure content still looks good when stretched over the mammoth 115 inches of screen real estate. If you've been considering a super-sized TV but are concerned with picture quality at such a large scale, this 115-inch offering has the tech which Samsung claims can put your mind at ease. Here's a promise I can keep: In the coming years, you'll be hearing a lot about something called RGB Mini-LED. Recently, several companies unveiled TVs that sport this brand-new display technology, and each of these brands couldn't be more excited about the benefits RGB Mini-LEDs bring to the viewing experience. We're talking brighter pictures, improved contrast, and color volume that very well could exceed what we've seen on the best OLED TVs on the market. Here's everything you need to know about how Samsung, Hisense and Sony are putting their own spin on RGB Mini-LEDs, and why these sets could be the start of a new era in TV tech. While each TV maker exploring post-Mini-LED panel technologies is playing around with different formulas, the basic approach is similar for Samsung, Hisense and Sony. Previous iterations on LED backlighting have revolved around making the LEDs smaller with more controllable zones, thus enhancing contrast. This is why Mini-LEDs are considered the current gold standard for consumer LED TVs. There are key hardware- and software-related differences from one brand's design to the next, and exactly how this new technology is deployed depends on a number of factors. With that in mind, let's take a look at where Samsung, Hisense and Sony stand with their take. Samsung recently unveiled the first of its TVs to bridge the gap between traditional Mini-LED and next-generation Micro-LED with the Samsung Micro RGB TV. Currently, it's only being made available in a 115-inch model, which will set you back a whopping $29,999. Samsung claims that it's capable of covering 100% of the BT.2020 color gamut. That would be higher than any TV I've measured in my ten-year history of testing TVs. The Samsung Micro RGB TV comes with a native 144Hz refresh rate, built-in smart features and Samsung's Vision AI software suite. Similar to the brand's flagship OLED, the Samsung S95F, this Micro RGB TV is dressed with a matte, glare-free finish. Credit where credit is due: Hisense was the first brand to introduce me to this next-generation TV technology earlier this year. Originally, Hisense was calling its take TriChroma LED, but according to recent press materials, this has been swapped out for the name RGB Mini-LED. Originally unveiled at CES 2025, the Hisense 116UX is launching this year in an exclusive, 116-inch version. If you're keeping score at home, that's one inch bigger than Samsung's Micro RGB TV. It'll also be available for the same eye-watering price of $29,999. The 116UX debuts alongside a slightly smaller (but still huge) 100-inch version, the Hisense 100UX. This TV is reportedly hitting shelves at $19,999. Hisense claims that the 116UX can clear 95% coverage of the BT.2020 color gamut. We've already been lucky enough to take a look at the 116UX with our testing equipment, and according to measurements, the 116UX is the brightest commercial TV we've ever tested, easily cracking the 5,000-nit mark in HDR. Of the brands tinkering with this technology, Sony is taking the most time to forge its own path. To date, Sony hasn't officially given a name to its take on RGB Mini-LED, nor has it given a name to the model we saw during a press event in Tokyo earlier this year. For now, at Tom's Guide, we're colloquially referring to the TV as the Bravia 10 and to Sony's take on the technology as Sony RGB LED. Neither of these names are confirmed. Based on what we know, Sony's version of this display operates similarly to that of Samsung and Hisense. Sony says the display covers 90% of BT.2020 and can get as bright as 4,000 nits. Unlike its competitors, Sony is currently planning on debuting this TV sometime in 2026, so we'll have to wait to get more details There's no way around it: Most people can't afford TVs in the $20,000 to $30,000 price range, and while big screens are more popular than ever, 100-inch TVs just aren't practical. But if you're hoping to put a 65-inch RGB Mini-LED TV for your living room, you'll probably have to wait a while. As time moves on, these TV-makers are banking on RGB Mini-LED being brought down to popular sizes, like 75 and 65 inches. Display technology can be tricky to scale down. When it comes to pricey, carefully engineered display hardware, it's much more cost effective to start at larger display sizes before developing a reliable way of manufacturing it at smaller size points. This is why most of these TVs are both gargantuan and expensive. But as time moves on, these TV-makers are banking on RGB Mini-LED being brought down to popular sizes, like 75 and 65 inches. In the meantime, consider RGB Mini-LED to be a bridge between the Mini-LEDs of today and the TVs of the future.
