Celtic 4 Falkirk 1: Instant reaction to the burning issues

The National3 days ago
Daizen Maeda broke the deadlock, with Alistair Johnston, Dane Murray and a Liam Henderson own goal in a second half spurt putting the game to bed.
A brilliant strike by Keelan Adams gave the large Falkirk travelling support something to cheer, but it was scant consolation on a night when their team was largely outclassed.
Here are the talking points from Celtic Park…
Maeda up for the cup again and back on the goal trail
It is fair to say that the perpetually-in-motion winger hasn't quite hit the brilliant heights of last season so far in this, but there were signs here that he is starting to crank back into top gear, as he bagged his first goal of the campaign.
And the cup specialist was always likely to get a goal in this one. He has now scored in eight of the last nine domestic cup games that Celtic have played, racking up 14 goals along the way.
It was a well worked move by Celtic too, who had been chapping on the door from the off. Callum McGregor's dink to the back post was met by Kieran Tierney, who bagged another assist by guiding the ball expertly across the six-yarder for Maeda to nod past former teammate Scott Bain.
When Tierney returned to the club in the summer, he stated that one of the things he was looking forward to most was building up a formidable partnership down the Celtic left with 'machine' Maeda.
Barring a comical fresh air kick from Tierney that drew laughter from his own fans once they were sure he hadn't done himself an injury, the pair are already looking to be finding an ominous understanding.
Rodgers rings the changes, did Engels stake a claim?
With Champions League qualifiers on the horizon and the small matter of a shlep to the vicinity of the Chinese border to contend with in the not-too-distant future, Celtic manager Rodgers understandably looked to rotate and get some game time into the legs of those who have been on the outside looking in so far this season.
He made six changes in all to the side who won at Pittodrie on Sunday, but perhaps the most intriguing of those was the inclusion of Arne Engels, with the £11m man seeing his place in the starting XI seized by summer arrival Benjamin Nygren, a mere snip at around a tenth of the price.
And he showed flashes of his undoubted class. There was a brilliant free kick that clattered off the inside of the far post, with the Belgian desperately unlucky to see it bounce out to safety. He should have definitely scored when he failed to anticipate that a delightful Johnston clipped cross would reach him, with the ball instead bouncing off his face and clear from about a yard.
Overall, did he make it impossible for Rodgers to leave him out when the bigger occasions roll around? While showing up well, he probably didn't quite do enough, which has rather been the story of his Celtic career to date.
Murray minted and on the scoresheet
What better way for the 22-year-old to celebrate his bumper new contract extension, keeping him at Celtic until the summer of 2028, than with a goal? And he got it as he glanced home a corner, showing his strength and aerial ability to get on the end of a wicked Engels delivery.
It was his work at the other end that was of most interest though, and he did that competently enough despite the sporadic counter punches that Falkirk were managing to land on Viljami Sinisalo's goal.
The most striking aspect of Murray these days is just how much he has developed physically since those early days of his Celtic career, when Ange Postecoglou was forced to throw the youngster in at the deep end for his debut in a Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland four years ago now.
Rodgers said before this game that he expects to see big things from the centre-back in the next year to 18 months, and it will be interesting to see if he can force his way up the pecking order at the heart of the Celtic defence.
Bigger fish for Falkirk to fry, but they must tighten up defence
In a similar vein as to when they came here on cup duty last season, Falkirk left on the end of a hefty defeat, but also with plenty of credit for the way they approached the task at hand.
Manager John McGlynn will be disappointed with the manner of the goals his team conceded of course, but there was plenty of adventure in their play, and had they been more clinical on the break in the first half then it might have been a different story.
As much as Celtic have bigger fish to fry this season than this tie, Falkirk certainly do though, and their chief concern has to be tightening up at the back. The same frailties that saw them concede two to Dundee United and three to Livingston last weekend were on display once more, albeit against a step up in opposition.
The news that winger Ethan Ross will be missing for a significant spell with an ankle injury though will sting McGlynn and the Bairns more than this loss will.
Scott Bain finally seen again at Celtic Park
It is somewhat ironic that the keeper had to leave Celtic to get finally get another game at Celtic Park, with his last appearance here coming as a substitute for Joe Hart as he took his curtain call in the last minute of the 2023/24 season, despite being on the books for another whole year.
If he rather had his feet up during that period, then the opposite was true here, with the former Celt kept busy as his old pals peppered his goal, particularly early on.
He did well to repel a fair few of them in fairness, as the 33-year-old showed that the old agility was still there, and while it may have been harsh on Nicky Hogarth to have been usurped from the position after an impressive campaign last season, the experienced Bain could be key if Falkirk are to survive this term.

As well as her incredible social media following, Diletta is a host for DAZN's football coverage in Italy. But the Italian has come under criticism in recent months for her on-screen outfits. Valentina Maceri, who presents Champions League coverage on Swiss broadcaster Blue, slammed Diletta and a number of her DAZN colleague's outfits as "lacking in class" and "vulgar". Diletta has been with former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius since 2022, with the pair welcoming little Aria in 2023 before tying the knot last year. Karius now plays for Bundesliga 2. side Schalke after leaving Newcastle in 2024, meaning the pair have to juggle their relationship over two countries. But the shot-stopper has said their relationship is in safe hands despite the distance, explaining in a recent interview with Sport Bild that Diletta is supportive of his move. He said: "Diletta even advised me to extend at Schalke. She thinks the club is great and she likes everything she has seen here so far. "Diletta also thinks that royal blue is the perfect choice for my sporting success. She is fully behind this decision." Karius, however, admitted it's tough not seeing Aria every day but FaceTime is saving the day. He added: 'But of course it's hard for me when I can't see my little daughter Aria for days. "But that's what FaceTime is for and we see each other regularly - as often as possible." 12 Diletta and Karius have been together since 2022 Credit: Instagram @dilettaleotta 12 Diletta's outfit caused a stir online Credit: Instagram @dilettaleotta 12 The presenter's dress was see-through from head to toe Credit: Instagram @dilettaleotta 12 Diletta has come under criticism for her outfits on DAZN too Credit: Getty 12 Loris Karius has lifted the lid on what it is like to be apart from Diletta Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta

That's because West Ham, Brentford and Wrexham are all still tracking the forward as they look to bolster their own front lines. Vardy, 38, has been searching for a new club all summer but has been keeping himself fit with a personal trainer. Sources close to the star say he is ready to play, and still believes he can compete at the highest level for one or maybe two seasons. They lost on the opening day and will want to bounce back quickly to get their season back on track. Meanwhile Wrexham, who have been linked with the player all Summer, remain actively interested. The Welsh side have started the season poorly, with two league defeats. Securing Vardy would give them a massive boost and would also provide massive commercial benefits. Vardy and wife Becky are believed to be intrigued by the idea of becoming a part of the Wrexham project, which has featured on Disney as a fly-on-the-wall hit show. 8 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Luke McCowan reveals viral Celtic strip is still on the go as he recalls obsession with club he loves

McCowan was just a nipper but it was a special era for the club and he spent many an hour as a youngste The famous strip is still gathering dust in the attic but the DVD has long been worn out. ‌ Luke McCowan admitted it was funny to see an old picture of him as a kid wearing the Celtic kit worn on the road to Seville more than 20 years ago – but it's time for a new top to be hung up and some fresh footage for the greatest hits collection. ‌ It's no secret the playmaker has always been Hoops daft and a reminder popped up online last week with a snap of him wearing the kid from Martin O'Neill's team that reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2003. ‌ McCowan was just a nipper but it was a special era for the club and he spent many an hour as a youngster watching the tape of the incredible run that featured epic wins against Liverpool, Blackburn and Celta Vigo before being ended by Jose Mourinho's Porto. The midfielder would love to create some memories of his own this season as Celts get set to kick-off their Champions League odyssey against Kairat Almaty tomorrow night – and add to his kit collection. McCowan said: "My mum and dad are hoarders so no doubt the strip is lying stinking in the loft somewhere! "I was about five or six and it was the first top I remember wanting to wear. "I had Celtic trackies but that's the first top I remember, especially with that team. "I had DVDs of that team as well and that's when I started playing football. It was a proper obsession. ‌ "I was a bit young to watch the games but as I got older I got the DVD 'The Road to Seville'. "I've probably not watched it in 10 years but it was incredible some of the places they went and got results. "It was amazing and was class to watch.' ‌ McCowan Is relishing being part of it now. He knows exactly the demands from the stands – because he's been there. Celtic are looking to steal a march on Kairat in tomorrow's first leg with an brutal 3500 mile return the following week. ‌ McCowan knows the Hoops won't be alone though as he said: "I didn't go to trips as a fan back then. That's the main men who go the far-away trips! "I was Scottish-bound – and I probably couldn't afford to go abroad and pay for a ticket. "My dad did it and my grandad and uncles. They went to Seville and other places. ‌ "They probably didn't go to Kazakhstan, right enough! 'But they went everywhere possible. "You can count on Celtic to be there if they can. It's a credit to them for travelling the world watching Celtic. ‌ "It makes a difference. Even in Dortmund when the result didn't go our way, they were up there supporting us. "That was the first night I'd walked out and seen them as a player on a European night away from home and it was incredible. "You're just hoping we get those nights again.' ‌ McCowan and Celtic are facing a trip into the unknown with Kairat but he's well aware of the stakes. The Kazakhstan champions send in their way of a £40m Euro jackpot – and the chance to mix it with the cream of the continent. McCowan lapped up the Champions League experience last term and he's determined to get back. ‌ He said: "I've no idea what the plan is for Almaty. "I'm looking forward to finding out because it's a long distance and a big time difference. 'But it's about playing in Europe. It's one of the many reasons you can't wait to play for Celtic. ‌ "You want the chance to put on a performance against top opposition. "It's a dream for me to play in Europe for Celtic. "Now it's about doing it again this year. ‌ "Walking out in the Allianz Arena was special for me. "Sadly, I didn't get onto the pitch but just walking out and hearing the fans in the stands and seeing the level of opposition was special. "To see our team put on that performance was great and we're looking to do the same again. ‌ "The motivation now is to get back to that level again. "It's a tough ask to get through the qualifiers. "You have to prove you want it more and I'm sure we can do that.' ‌ Celtic's ambitions don't just end with making the group stage. McCowan insisted the Hoops are determined to claim their place at the top table but also to improve on last season's showing. Brendan Rodgers's men achieved their main objection by getting the the knockout stages, recovering from an early battering by Borussia Dortmund by picking up impressive results against RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb and Young Boys, while giving Aston Villa a game in Birmingham before going taking German powerhouses Bayern Munich to the very last minute in the play-off round. McCowan said: "Game by game, you look at certain moments in games. ‌ "Maybe we could have done better against Bayern at home when you see how we did away. "It's all ifs and buts. Hindsight would be the perfect superpower! "It's about this year and reapplying the same message and working hard to get to that level again. "It's probably the standards you want to set. Every year you want to improve. "You want to demand more of yourself every season. "You can't look ahead too far. You need the same performance level.'
