Once a hallmark of ambition and success, climbing the corporate ladder is now being scrutinised by younger generations who are inclined to ask: "Is this even the right wall?"
Millennials and Gen Z employees are challenging the old norms of professional advancement, as they prioritise purpose, flexibility, and meaningful work over traditional hierarchical success.
While it may appear that these younger workers are simply disinterested in career advancement, their intentions are far more strategic and rooted in a desire for meaningful development.
The Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2025 report reveals a staggering statistic: a mere 21% of employees globally feel engaged at work.
This disengagement seems to stem from a troubling scenario—managers, the very individuals expected to inspire and lead, are finding themselves burnt out and demotivated.
The consequences of poor management ripple downwards, making the ladder seem less appealing to younger workers down the line.
Climbing to what, exactly?
Younger professionals are seeking growth, but not in the traditional sense.
An InStride survey indicates that over 80% of respondents desire educational benefits to help with career development. Yet, with the rise of AI and automation, many industries are becoming unstable, leading to doubts about the security of the professional path ahead.
A 2023 McKinsey Global Institute report warns that as much as 30% of current work hours in the U.S. could be automated by 2030—a forecast that is particularly concerning for younger individuals already facing high unemployment rates. In South Africa, youth unemployment stands at a staggering 46.5% for those aged 15 to 34.

National head of sales at BetterBond, Brad Bendall, said the two generations might enter the property market later, but younger buyers continue to 'drive activity in the home loan market'. He shared data that shows buyers between the ages of 20 and 35 accounted for almost a third of all residential property transactions in 2024, making it the second largest group after buyers in the 36 to 50 cohort. 'High prime lending rates and financial pressures have had an impact on younger buyers' market activity,' he said, adding a recent FNB report saw first-time buyers, of which 69% are classified as 'youth', accounted for almost 68% of all bond approvals in April this year. Here are five facts that show Millennials and Gen Z are shaking up the property industry. TECH SAVVY While the two generations have grown up in a tech-oriented world, Gen Z has led the charge in investing in homes that incorporate smart automation and energy efficiency. Bendall said Gen Z is more likely to conduct the process of buying a new home exclusively online. TEAMWORK MAKES THE NEW HOME WORK Gen Z buyers have driven trends that appreciate micro-apartments that allow for lock-and-go convenience. They've also been drawn to co-living arrangements where several people share a housing unit and communal facilities. Bendall said financial security is important for the group, as these buyers are likely to consider a joint bond with family members or friends to make home ownership possible. POWER OF INDEPENDENCE Between the ages of 29 and 44, Millennials are said to take the opposite route by investing into a property solo. Bendall said Millennials no longer consider traditional notions of being married first and then getting into home ownership. Instead, they 'assert their financial independence as single buyers'. Many of the buyers are black women under the age of 40, according to BetterBond's application data. STEPPING STONES While many Millennials are leaning towards buying their own property, Bendall said some work with friends, family or their partners to invest in a property they can use as a stepping stone towards their next home. 'This generation will also consider reinvesting, where they own a home in a more affordable area while renting in the area in which they want to live,' said Bendall. SIZE MATTERS With Millennials taking a strong interest in health and wellness, their lifestyles have become a huge factor when choosing a home. This does not prioritise location but rather stresses an importance for the size of the space. This is seen in Cape Town, where Millennials comprise a large part of the residential population. 'They compromise on the property's size to benefit from the vibrancy of city living and proximity to work,' said Bendall. This includes sectional title units in lifestyle estates and new developments.

New research into the spending habits of South Africa's youth reveals that 80% still use cash regularly, not because they reject digital but because fees, access and trust gaps persist. Cash is king, credit is hard to come by and side hustles often bring in more than 9-to-5 jobs. That's life for many young South Africans. But Gen Zs are not sitting back waiting for a break. They're making a plan and figuring things out for themselves. Youth specialists Student Village, in partnership with Futurist, Economist and Business Trends Analyst, Bronwyn Williams of Flux Trends, released The Gen Z Economy Report: Cash, Culture and Clout — new research unveiling how young people in South Africa earn, spend, save and think about money. Based on responses from over 900 South Africans aged 18 to 30, the report shows a generation shaped by financial pressure and economic uncertainty, but full of grit. It reveals how Gen Z is rethinking what it means to earn, spend and save, and why brands need to start paying closer attention.

A wallet filled with cash and loyalty cards feels about as relevant as a phone booth for Gen Z shoppers. They're swapping physical payments for smartphones, buy-now-pay-later options, and loyalty apps. Gen Z has a low tolerance for obstacles. The moment a checkout process starts to drag– a form to fill, a password to remember – their patience runs out and their shopping cart is abandoned. According to the Online Retail in South Africa Report for 2024, online shopping is most prevalent among 25 to 34-year olds, closely followed by the 15 to 24 age group. Future trends of payment offerings seem to be dictated by the younger generation, and by 2030, they will be the greatest spending force across sub-Saharan Africa. Goodbye wallet The leather wallet your dad carries and your mom's heavy handbag filled with loyalty cards are quickly becoming artefacts of a different era. 'Today, everything's on your phone, your cards are on your phone,' Jonathan Spencer, brand head at OneDayOnly, said. 'All of your buy-now-pay-later options are also on your phone. You can check everything on your banking apps on your phone.' OneDayOnly, the South African daily deal site, has lived through this shift first-hand. Launched in 2010, the platform made its name by offering discounts on a number of different products each day. Spencer said that the way the site has kept up with evolving payment technology – by adding methods, removing friction and keeping data secure – keeps younger shoppers clicking. South African Reserve Bank data shows that digital payments (such as mobile wallets, tap-and-go and QR codes) are used by 53% of the youth in the country. Checkers has also kept its digital payment ecosystem a step ahead. When ordering online through the Sixty60 app, users are redirected directly to their banking apps for verification. 'Today's retail environment is defined by increasingly diverse customer needs and preferences. Convenience, flexibility and accessibility are central to what customers expect,' the retailer said. Breaking big payments into bite-sized chunks Many young customers also prefer using buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) payment options as it offers a budget-friendly option for a generation who are keeping a tighter grip on their purse strings. Gen Zs are more cognisant of the fact that credit comes with a lot of interest, Spencer said, adding OneDayOnly's BNPL option, Payflex, has grown a lot over the past year, along with instant EFT platforms such as Ozow, one of the retail site's biggest partners. In South Africa, BNPL is projected to become a $1.3-billion (R23-million) industry by 2030, growing roughly 13.6% annually. On Takealot's platform, the BNPL model is experiencing 'significant growth' among young consumers using Payflex, particularly in the 23–29 age demographic, the online retailer said. Its revolving credit service lets shoppers pay in instalments and earn 1% back on purchases, which offers a flexible solution for those with irregular income or limited savings. Providing options at a cost Adding more payment methods come at a price which merchants need to absorb. Spencer said that transaction fees associated with these platforms are a convenience charge but can become costly. 'The general public don't really understand that when we take on these payment partners, there's a fee per transaction that's involved in it for us as a company and those fees vary per partner,' he said. The future is (still) mobile-first In future, payments will become even more flexible. 'I think we'll start seeing some sort of cryptocurrency coming in,' Spencer said. 'That's something people are starting to think about and how we would start working that into our business and start taking it as payment.' South African retailers such as Takealot and Pick n Pay already accept crypto payments and according to the South African Revenue Service, more than 5.8 million South Africans hold a crypto asset. Loyalty programmes, such as banking rewards and student discounts, remain a powerful way to attract and retain young shoppers. An example is Varsity Vibe, a discount app that can be used only by students and offers special promotions and discounts when shopping at stores such as H&M. Takealot's loyalty service, TakealotMORE, plays directly into this preference. With plans starting at R39 a month, members can get free delivery across Takealot, Mr D, Takealot and in-store Pick n Pay orders. The online retailer said young shoppers appreciate services that integrate smoothly into their lifestyle. Quick and convenient Gen Zs expect their smartphones to do it all: carry their payments and loyalty points without needless complexity. To better serve a younger demographic, Takealot advocates integrating shopping directly into social media platforms, where young people already spend so much of their time, and adding user review and content from their peers to aid purchasing decisions. 'We know that the world is leading mobile first,' Spencer said. 'Businesses need to start thinking through that lens: How can I get this quickly and conveniently through my phone?' DM
