Theft of mail at City of Edmonton facility prompts public alert

Yahoo18-07-2025
The City of Edmonton is alerting the public about a break-in and theft that occurred at a City facility after-hours on the weekend of June 28, one it says may have 'compromised the privacy of a limited number of Edmontonians.'
Edmonton city police are investigating after staff discovered the theft of up to 200 pieces of mail and other items on June 30, said a Thursday City of Edmonton news release.
The mail would have been dropped off at a City facility or sent locally to the City of Edmonton via Canada Post between June 24 and June 27, said the release.
'The stolen mail may have included details such as names, addresses, contact information, family details and/or financial information,' it reads.
'While the City takes all necessary precautions to safeguard the personal information entrusted to it by Edmontonians, no organization is immune to criminal activity.'
Upon discovering the theft, the City of Edmonton relocated mail storage to another secure location. It also launched an internal privacy investigation to determine the extent of the privacy breach, said the release. And it has reported the privacy breach to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the provincial Minister of Technology and Innovation.
Staff have been reaching out to potentially affected individuals where possible. Anyone who dropped off mail at a City facility – including recreation centres, attractions and the Edmonton Service Centre – or sent mail to the City locally via Canada Post between June 24 and June 27, is encouraged to contact the City of Edmonton to confirm receipt of their mail, said the release.
Visit edmonton.ca/MailServicesBreach to confirm the appropriate contact. Alternatively, you can email mailservicesbreach@edmonton.ca or call 311 to be directed to the correct person.
Those who believe their personal information has been collected, used, or disclosed in contravention of the Protection of Privacy Act can request a review by the Information and Privacy Commissioner under Section 37 of the Act.

Attempted break-in reported at home of All-Star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto during Dodgers road trip

Three people attempted to break into the Hollywood Hills home of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto early Wednesday morning, according to NBC4 Los Angeles. Nothing was stolen, and the intruders never entered the residence, per authorities, according to NBC4, which also reported that the group leapt over the house's back fence at around 5:30 a.m. and broke a rear glass door. Yamamoto is currently with the Dodgers in Cincinnati, where the team is finishing up a three-game series Wednesday. But staff members were home at the time of the commotion and turned on the lights, according to NBC4. Per the station's report, that's when the trio fled, although law enforcement sources told NBC4 that three people were seen on security camera footage. No arrests have been reported, according to NBC4. The attempted break-in took place not even two full days after Yamamoto recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-2 road win over the Reds. The 26-year-old became a first-time MLB All-Star this season, his second in the big leagues. Before joining the Dodgers in 2024, he was a five-time All-Star in Nippon Professional Baseball, Japan's top pro league, in which Yamamoto earned three straight Pacific League MVP awards. This season, the right-handed pitcher has posted a 9-7 record and a 2.63 ERA in 21 starts. His 10.289 strikeouts per nine innings are good for ninth most in MLB, per Sports Reference. Break-ins at the homes of professional athletes have been on the rise in recent years. In 2023, the homes of Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy and first baseman Freddie Freeman were burglarized. In December last year, the FBI issued a warning to professional sports leagues, calling attention to the role social media can play in attempted burglaries. The bureau encouraged leagues to advise their athletes to refrain from displaying their valuables on public platforms. Earlier that same month, the home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was burglarized while he was on the road playing the Dallas Cowboys.

Six years later, Alberta RCMP officer who shot person in face charged with aggravated assault

A retired Alberta RCMP officer is facing criminal charges for allegedly shooting a person during an investigation more than six years ago. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) on Tuesday announced it has charged former Mountie Geordie Erickson with aggravated assault. The charge stems from an April 6, 2019, stolen property investigation in Eckville, a town outside Red Deer. During the investigation, Erickson was accused of shooting the occupant of a vehicle in the cheek. ASIRT's investigation revealed 'reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed,' and the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service determined the evidence met its standards for prosecution, ASIRT said in a news release. Erickson was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear Aug. 28 in Red Deer's Court of Justice. ASIRT is in charge of investigating cases where police officers kill or seriously injure members of the public, as well as allegations of criminal misconduct by law enforcement. jwakefield@ @ Related ASIRT investigating after man shot dead by police in Lac La Biche Law enforcement watchdog appointed to head up new Alberta Police Review Commission You can also support our journalism by becoming a digital subscriber.
