Six years later, Alberta RCMP officer who shot person in face charged with aggravated assault

Yahoo5 days ago
A retired Alberta RCMP officer is facing criminal charges for allegedly shooting a person during an investigation more than six years ago.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) on Tuesday announced it has charged former Mountie Geordie Erickson with aggravated assault.
The charge stems from an April 6, 2019, stolen property investigation in Eckville, a town outside Red Deer. During the investigation, Erickson was accused of shooting the occupant of a vehicle in the cheek.
ASIRT's investigation revealed 'reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed,' and the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service determined the evidence met its standards for prosecution, ASIRT said in a news release.
Erickson was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear Aug. 28 in Red Deer's Court of Justice.
ASIRT is in charge of investigating cases where police officers kill or seriously injure members of the public, as well as allegations of criminal misconduct by law enforcement.

Senior missing in Gimli after saying he was going for a bike ride: RCMP

Manitoba RCMP are asking for the public's help in finding a missing senior in Gimli. Ralph Osterwald, 66, was last seen on Friday at around 7 p.m. leaving from a home in the town — roughly 84 kilometres north of Winnipeg — on a grey-coloured bike saying he was going for a ride. Mounties and Osterwald's family are concerned for his well-being, police said in a news release Sunday afternoon. The man was reported missing on Saturday and officers still believe he is in the town's area. Osterwald is six feet tall with a thin build, grey thinning hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing a cowboy hat, a fleece jacket and blue jeans, police said. Winnipegger, Ontario man dead after separate drownings in southern Manitoba

Two men are dead after separate drownings in southern Manitoba over the weekend, RCMP say. Mounties were first dispatched at around 2 p.m. on Saturday to the Rural Municipality of Reynolds after receiving reports that a person might have drowned at Reynolds Ponds, which is about 65 kilometres east of Winnipeg. Police were told a man had been swimming when suddenly he didn't resurface. While bystanders had tried to search for him, they couldn't find him. A 70-year-old man from Ontario was later found dead, RCMP said. The second drowning happened at Grand Beach. RCMP said they were dispatched to the provincial park about 80 kilometres north of Winnipeg at around 8 p.m. on Saturday. At Grand Beach, police were told two males had gone out to the lake on a pool floatation device when they lost balance and fell into the water. While one of them was rescued by a nearby kayaker, the other one didn't resurface, RCMP said. The underwater team found a 25-year-old man from Winnipeg in the water who was pronounced dead. Mounties said they continue to investigate both of the drownings.

'So much life left to live': Slaying of 16-year-old in Abbeydale remains under investigation

The 16-year-old Calgary boy found dead in Abbeydale was described by family friends as 'a light to everyone who knew him.' Following his death, which police have deemed to be a homicide, Calgary Search and Rescue teams have been combing through the community in search of evidence linked to his killing. Around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, Calgary police responded to an incident along the 300 block of Abergale Drive N.E. Upon their arrival, officers located a deceased teenage male who was later identified as Carter Spivak-Villeneuve. As of Saturday afternoon, acting Staff Sgt. Derek MacNaughton of the Calgary police operations intelligence group said the investigation is still in its early stages. 'There's no threat to the public, most of the police have left the area, and more updates will come through our media and (public affairs) sections,' he said. Abbeydale residents spoke with Postmedia about the homicide but wanted to remain anonymous in the event the incident was gang-related. 'It's just sad,' one resident said. 'I was born and raised in this community, and I've watched it over the years … but it's sad that someone passed away.' A homeowner in the area where the incident took place said he was out of town when it happened. Upon his return, he was approached by Calgary police for footage from his cameras. 'My grandson said (the victim) was actually in our house when they were younger,' said the homeowner. 'He said he hasn't seen him in three years, and I think he said he lived here in Abbeydale.' On Friday, another neighbour told Postmedia that she heard three gunshots sometime after midnight. An online fundraiser has been started by friends on behalf of the victim's family to support them following the loss of their son, with a goal of raising $22,000. 'Carter was more than just a teenager — he was a son, a brother, a nephew, a cousin, a friend and grandchild and a light to everyone who knew him,' said a written appeal on the fundraising page. 'Carter had so much life left to live and love left to give.' At this point, members of the family were not ready to make any public comment. 'What I can say is that the parents are trying to take this time to navigate this difficult loss,' said one of the organizers of the fundraiser. 'Carter was a sweet boy who just wanted to be loved by everyone.' After enough money has been raised, a private service will be held for Spivak-Villeneuve, the organizer said.
