UP woman's suicide bid thwarted after her social media post triggers alert

The Print4 hours ago

The post triggered an immediate alert from Meta to Uttar Pradesh Police's Social Media Centre in Lucknow.
The woman, a final-year undergraduate student from Devanandpur Nai Basti, posted a photo of capsules on Instagram along with a message that read: 'Goodbye, sorry mamma papa,' at 7.42 pm on June 16.
Raebareli (UP), Jun 18 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman, distressed by her family's pressure to marry, posted a concerning message on Instagram that hinted at a possible suicide. Fortunately, her post alerted Meta, which led to a swift response from the police, officials said on Wednesday.
The alert was escalated to the state Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Krishna, who instructed officers to trace the woman's location using the phone number associated with her account.
Within eight minutes of receiving the alert, a police team from the Mill Area Police Station reached the woman's house and found her safe but emotionally disturbed.
She was given immediate counselling and medical attention, and the police also spoke to her family.
'The young woman wanted to focus on her education, but her parents were pressuring her to get married. Distressed over this, she made the post. Fortunately, we received the alert in time and were able to intervene. Both she and her family have now agreed to resolve the matter peacefully,' Mill Area SHO Rajeev Singh said.
In a similar incident in the Deoria district recently, a 20-year-old student was saved after he posted a distressing suicide note and a picture on Instagram.
On June 12, the man from the Bhalauni area shared a message in Hindi saying, 'Forgive me, brothers, today I'm going to die,' along with a photo showing a noose around his neck.
The post triggered an alert from Meta at 3.44 pm to the UP Police Social Media Centre in Lucknow. The alert was relayed to the Deoria district police with the individual's location details.
A police sub-inspector from Bhalauni reached the student's home within 12 minutes, found him attempting to hang himself, and managed to rescue him in the nick of time.
The student later explained that he was under stress due to a bank loan taken by his parents that they were unable to repay. A recent notice and a heated exchange over the matter left him feeling deeply guilty, pushing him toward the drastic step.
After counselling, the student assured the police he would not repeat such an act, officials said.
Between January 1, 2023, and June 16, 2025, the collaboration between Meta and the UP Police helped save 1,024 lives throughout the state by responding to social media alerts, the police said. PTI COR/KIS MPL MPL

Video: US Tourists Accuse Man Of Secretly Filming Them At Gurugram Hotel

A group of American tourists have accused a man of allegedly filming them from his hotel room window while they were sunbathing within the hotel premises in Gurugram. Taking to Instagram, Rory and Sage, two sisters travelling the world with their parents, shared a video of the disturbing incident. In the clip, the camera zooms in on a hotel room window where a man is seen standing with his phone, seemingly recording the women as they lie in the sun. While the sisters appear visibly uncomfortable, their mother continues to record the man in return. 'Someone is filming us and they are not being discreet,' the mother says in the video, before calling her husband over and informing him that they are being recorded from a window. In the post caption, the American family wrote, 'If you're a female planning on coming to India, I wouldn't come without a bodyguard of a man. Whether you are sunbathing or fully clothed, we are finding this behaviour very common in India.' Take a look at the video below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rory And Sage World Class™ ✈️ (@roryandsageofficial) Since being shared, the video has accumulated more than 8.8 million views. The incident has sparked widespread concern about the safety and privacy of women, particularly tourists, in India. 'Please report it to the hotel, not the staff present but some senior management and they will take action, if not you can even file a report to the police. This should not be taken lightly and we need strict actions from foreigners, so that they can start taking local women seriously too. It might be a hassle to talk about it, you can send them an email too,' commented one user. 'As an Indian, I am mostly disgusted by these men who have zero knowledge of civic sense and privacy. Sorry, and hope you are safe and enjoyed our India,' commented another. 'This is so uncomfortable, sorry you had to deal with this,' expressed a third user. 'Ladies, please report him. The hotel staff will be more than helpful,' suggested one user. 'While I take pride in being an Indian, I sincerely apologize for the actions of my fellow countryman,' one user commented.

Swedish tourist claims Uber driver left him midway in Delhi's 45°C heat, demanded ₹5,000 extra; company reacts

A Swedish content creator visiting India has triggered discussion online after alleging that an Uber driver tried to scam him during an intercity ride. In an Instagram post, Jonas shared that he had booked an Uber Intercity journey which started off without issue. However, mid-way through the trip, the driver suddenly stopped in the middle of a busy road, claiming the vehicle had broken down. The driver then allegedly demanded ₹ 5,000 in cash for repairs. When Jonas refused, he said the driver abandoned him on the roadside — in extreme 45°C heat. In the caption of the post, Jonas further wrote that he contacted Uber, who booked not just one but three replacement rides for him. All of them, however, cancelled. 'Got home all well no thanks to Uber,' he added. Uber India responded swiftly to the post. Apologising for the incident, the company said action had been taken against the driver. 'Hi Jonas, we apologise for this frustrating experience. Our specialised team has investigated and taken appropriate action,' Uber India wrote. The post has triggered a wave of reactions in the comments section, with several users sharing similar experiences. One user wrote, 'No action will ever be taken by Uber. I had raised several complaints against their drivers for misbehaviour and misconduct, but they are ready with their bot response and post that no action against that driver. Sometimes I feel the driver and @uber_india are partnering to trouble the customers only.' Another added, '@uber_india intercity rides are scam. The drivers accept the ride and then call to pay extra.. telling Uber is showing one side fare only, I want double of the fare shown in the app. Happened on Friday in Jodhpur with us.' Another user called out a wider issue: 'This isn't just Uber. It's a mindset of squeezing every rupee from anyone, especially foreigners. I'm sorry you had to face this.'
