Mum's 'living nightmare' after drug lab explosion killed her son, 7, as he slept

Daily Mirror14-05-2025

Seven-year-old Archie York's mum Katherine Errington has spoken of her devastation after her little boy was killed when a cannabis lab exploded in the flat below their home
A mum whose son was killed as he slept at home when a cannabis lab exploded in the flat below has spoken of her living "nightmare". Archie York was just seven years old and safe in his bed when his life was cruelly snatched away.
Today Reece Galbraith was jailed for 14 years manslaughter. Galbraith previously admitted the manslaughter of Archie and Galbraith's friend, 33-year-old Jason 'Jay' Laws, in the blast which wrecked the street and rendered families homeless. Archie's mum Katherine Errington previously spoke out about her devastation, telling ChronicleLive: "It's just been awful. It's like we went to sleep that night and and we haven't woken up from that nightmare.

"It's like we are living in a nightmare. As a parent, and as a mother, you try your best to keep your children safe, and that was took out of my hands. When they are in the house, that's supposed to be the safest place."
Archie and his family were asleep at their home in the Benwell area of Newcastle when the huge explosion occurred on October 16. Katherine, 27, was in one room with her new baby Finley, while Archie and his dad Robbie, 27, slept in another.
Katherine and Robbie were taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment, while little Finley was uninjured. She said: "The RVI was the hospital we got taken to straight after the explosion.
"From the start they were absolutely great. The care and compassion they had after something like this was amazing. They said they had never dealt with anything like this. It is amazing what they done.

"As soon as we got there it was a shock to everyone. They didn't know what had happened. Everyone was so compassionate with all of us. They made sure Finley was ok. I do believe Archie was looking out for him on that night."
Paying tribute to her son, Katherine described Archie as a "happy" little boy who loved playing with his friends. She added: "Archie was a very cheeky little boy, he did light up the room everywhere. He loved playing on Fortnite, he loved playing outside with his friends and he loved going to school. He was just a happy lad."

In the weeks before he died, he had taken to his new role as a big brother with pride. Mum Katherine added: "He was so looking forward to to being a big brother. When I was pregnant he kept saying; 'When is the baby coming?'
"He just loved looking after Finley. He loved changing his nappies and bathing him. He was very hands on. It's just so sad I can't watch them grow up together. That's just been ripped away."
Archie was finally laid to rest in January, three months after the explosion following a Marvel-themed service at Newcastle's West Road Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, the family invited donations to be made to the Newcastle Hospitals Charity. They have since donated hundreds of pounds to the Great North Children's Hospital in Archie's memory.
"Archie was there lying to rest for a good three months," Katherine added. "Whenever I wanted to visit him they let us. They were just really nice from start to finish. It helped a lot, it really did. If that money helps the nurses or anyone else it's going to be on Archie. He was a caring person."
Today, at Newcastle Crown Court, Reece Galbraith was jailed for 14 years for two counts of manslaughter.

'Prankster' storms stage at Katy Perry concert in Sydney

SYDNEY — Pop star Katy Perry was surprised at her concert in Sydney on Monday when an attendee briefly ran up to her on stage and grabbed her before being escorted away by security. Perry was midway through her show at the the 21,000-seat Qudos Bank Arena, the second of three sold-out dates in the Australian city on her 'Lifetimes Tour.' Video footage posted by a concertgoer and verified by NBC News showed a man run down the circular stage, throw an arm around Perry's shoulder and start bouncing and dancing wildly. Perry, who appeared surprised, quickly moved away as she continued singing her 2008 hit 'Hot N Cold.' 'There's never going to be another show like this, so just enjoy it, Sydney,' she said, as the fan appeared to struggle with security guards. 'What the hell is going on?' Perry said to the crowd, as the man was dragged off stage. A representative for Perry could not immediately be reached for comment. The incident highlights growing concerns about poor etiquette at concerts, with audience members throwing items at artists such as Harry Styles and Lady Gaga. Police in the state of New South Wales, which includes Sydney, told NBC News that a man had been arrested and charged with two offenses: entering enclosed land and obstructing a person in performance of work or duties. They said he had been detained by security after jumping on stage during a concert around 9:20 p.m. local time. The man has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear in court on June 23, the police said, declining to name him in the meantime. He has also been banned for six months from Sydney Olympic Park, where the arena is located. The man has been identified in Australian media as Johnson Wen, who describes himself as a 'prankster' on his TikTok account, where he goes by the username pyjamamann and has a little over 1,100 followers. 'I was like, 'Let me get on stage with you,' and then she freaked out because I think she realized I wasn't a performer,' Wen told Australia's 9 News about the incident, adding that he was 'about to do the extra Fortnite move, but security got there too quick.' Previous videos posted on Wen's account show him running on stage at a concert by The Weeknd in Melbourne last year, and onto the field at the FIFA Women's World Cup final in 2023. 'I'm planning to quit forever, because you get in way too much trouble for it,' he said. Wen did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By Tuesday, he had posted four different videos of him rushing the stage. "Katy Perry your songs are my Childhood Memmory since 2008," he wrote in a caption for one of the videos. Another caption read,"Me Hugging Katy Perry on Stage. I said to Her 'let me dance for you'"

Notorious Cardiff-born killer's basic life in prison with 'minimum legal entitlements'

Notorious Cardiff-born killer's basic life in prison with 'minimum legal entitlements' Southport killer Axel Rudakubana is serving 52 years behind bars and is being held at HMP Belmarsh Axel Rudakubana is serving a lengthy jail term after carrying out one of the most heinous crimes in modern memory (Image: Merseyside Police ) Southport killer Axel Rudakubana receives the basic minimum legal requirements while serving his jail term in a Category A prison. That means the 18-year-old is permitted to purchase items from the HMP Belmarsh canteen, using money either earnt at the prison or sent to him by family members, but spends limited time outside of his cell and is brought items to where he is staying, the Liverpool Echo has learned. The Cardiff-born teenager, currently serving his 52-year term at the London jail alongside around 700 other inmates, killed three children in Southport on July 29 last year when he walked into a Taylor Swift-themed workshop shortly before midday. The then-17-year-old stabbed 11 children, killing three girls and injuring the rest, as well as attacking two adults in the rampage. Following his arrest at the scene, ricin was found in his bedroom at his family home in Banks, Lancashire, as well as a plethora of weapons and a second identical knife to that he used in the attack wrapped in his duvet. It further transpired how the murderer had previously been reported to Prevent on three occasions as well as being stopped by his own dad from getting in a taxi destined for Range High School just seven days prior to the attack on Hart Street, Southport. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January this year with him being kept in HMP Belmarsh, which is a high-security Category A facility. This article explains why despite the severity of his crimes he was not eligible for a whole-life jail term. But since being locked up the killer has allegedly attacked a prison officer, hospitalising him and forcing him to take time off work. Article continues below Rudakabana was in his prison cell at the time of the incident and allegedly used boiling water from a kettle in the room, as reported by Sky News. He then allegedly threw the boiling water over the officer through a hatch in his cell door. The prison officer was taken to hospital as a precaution but only suffered minor injuries. Since then Rudakubana has been given the legal minimum entitlements a prisoner can have, which restricts the amount of time he spends outside his cell and what he has access to. It is understood the legal minimum means he can still purchase items from the canteen using money either earnt at the prison or sent to him by family members but spends limited time outside of his cell and is brought items to where he is staying. National chair of the Prison Officers Association, Mark Fairhurst, said: "It is normal for every prisoner to have access to prison canteen items that they may purchase from private cash or prison earnings. "Restricting this would probably lead to a legal challenge under the Human Rights Act so the service would not be able to remove these privileges from prisoners." ‌A Met Police spokesman said: "The Met is investigating after a prison officer was subject to a serious assault at HMP Belmarsh on the afternoon of Thursday, May 8. Article continues below "The prison officer was taken to hospital where he was assessed before being discharged later the same day. "The investigation is being led by officers from the Prison Investigation Team on the Met's South East Command Unit."

RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: Children are being killed because we are too scared of being called racist. When will this dangerous madness end?

We've been here before and we'll be here again. Twenty-five years ago, a tragic eight-year-old girl called Victoria Climbie was tortured, starved and beaten to death while the authorities who could have saved her did nothing. Victoria was born in the Cote d'Ivoire, what we used to call the Ivory Coast, and brought to Britain by her great-aunt.
