Iraq electricity gradually back after nationwide outage

Arab News4 days ago
BAGHDAD: Electricity supply returned to all Iraq's provinces on Tuesday, a government official told AFP, expecting the grid's full recovery within a day after a nationwide power outage.Electricity shortages are a frequent complaint in Iraq, suffering from endemic corruption and dilapidated public infrastructure. Most households rely on private generators, acquired to compensate for daily power cuts to public electricity. On Monday, the electricity ministry said that 'a record rise in temperatures' coupled with a surge in demand resulted in the shutdown of transmission lines, which then led to a total outage.A senior ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Tuesday that 'since midnight, all provinces have seen the return' of power supply. The official cautioned that 'it is happening gradually,' with the central province of Karbala, where millions of Shiite Muslim pilgrims were expected for a major religious commemoration, being 'the first to recover its electricity.'In the capital Baghdad, the grid was back to 95 percent of its normal capacity, said the official. The outage came amid a heatwave that Iraqi meteorological services expect to last more than a week, with temperatures climbing as high as 50C in parts of the country. While the vast majority of Iraqis rely on private generators, they often cannot power all household appliances, especially air conditioners.Iraq is sometimes rocked by protests when outages worsen in the hot summer months. To avoid outages during peak demand, Iraq would need to produce around 55,000 megawatts of electricity. This month, for the first time, the country's power plants reached the 28,000-megawatt threshold. The electricity ministry official said that 'the system has returned to normal and is stable,' producing 24,000 megawatts and expected to reach 27,000 once the final malfunctions related to Monday's outage are resolved.

Designated banks stay open today as Pakistan receives Hajj applications on final day

ISLAMABAD: Designated banks across Pakistan are open today for the receipt of Hajj applications from intending pilgrims under the government scheme, according to the Pakistani religious affairs ministry. Pakistan has a Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims. Of this, 129,210 seats have been allocated for the government scheme and the rest for private tour operators. The religious affairs ministry this week said it had received 91,000 applications under the government scheme. The religious affairs ministry said the State Bank of Pakistan accepted its request and issued orders to keep open branches of 14 designated banks for the receipt of Hajj applications on the final day. Pakistan began receiving Hajj applications on Aug. 4. 'Bookings will be closed once the required number of applicants is reached,' the ministry said. 'Hajj applications received on a first-come, first-served basis will be considered valid.' It urged Hajj applicants to obtain a computerized receipt from the bank and check their details on the ministry's online portal or Pak Hajj 2026 app. 'In case of any mistake, get it corrected immediately by the concerned bank,' the ministry added. Under the government scheme, pilgrims can choose between a long Hajj package (38–42 days) and a short package (20–25 days). The estimated cost of the government Hajj package ranges between Rs1,150,000 and Rs1,250,000 (approximately $4,050 to $4,236). 'It is mandatory to submit the first installment of Rs500,000 or Rs550,000 along with the application according to the package,' the ministry said this week. 'The second installment of Hajj dues will be collected from November 1.' Saudi Arabia approved the same overall quota for Pakistan in 2025, but a significant portion of the private allocation went unused due to delays by tour operators in meeting payment and registration deadlines, while the government fulfilled its share of over 88,000 pilgrims. Private operators blamed the shortfall on technical issues, including payment processing and communication problems.

Magnitude 4.9 Quake Strikes Near East Coast of Australia

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near the east coast of Australia on Saturday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. The quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) deep, Reuters quoted the EMSC as saying. It earlier said the quake, which hit Queensland state, was of 5.7 magnitude. There was no threat of tsunami to Queensland, Australia's weather forecaster said in an alert on its website. A spokesperson from state-run energy distribution company Energex told the Australian Broadcasting Corp that around 11,000 properties were without power after the quake. More than 9,000 people reported feeling the quake, according to the federal agency Geoscience Australia, which recorded the epicenter as the rural town of Kilkivian, about 170 km (110 miles) northwest of the state capital Brisbane.
