9 dead, 3 missing in north China flash flood: state media
A group of 13 people were camping outdoors in Inner Mongolia's Urat Rear Banner when a flash flood occurred around 10 pm (1400 GMT) on Saturday, state news agency Xinhua said.
As of Sunday afternoon, one person had been rescued and over 700 workers were "urgently" searching for the missing, Xinhua added.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has ordered full-scale rescue efforts, verification of the status of the missing, and dispatched a working group to the scene, state broadcaster CCTV said.
Natural disasters are common across China, particularly in the summer, when some regions experience heavy rain while others bake in searing heat.
The death toll from flash floods and mudslides in northwest China in early August was at least 13, state media said previously.
Heavy rain in Beijing in the north also killed 44 people last month, with the capital's rural suburbs hardest hit, and another eight people died in a landslide in nearby Hebei province.
Scientists have shown that human-driven climate change is causing more intense weather patterns that can make destructive floods more likely. — AFP

Flight suffers tail strike, lands in 2nd attempt in India's Mumbai
NEW DELHI, Aug 16, (Xinhua): An aircraft belonging to the private airline IndiGo suffered a tail strike amid rough weather conditions on Saturday at the international airport in the Indian city Mumbai and landed safely in a second attempt. A spokesperson of the airline said that the Bangkok-Mumbai flight, after suffering from a tail strike in the first attempt, safely landed at around 3:00 am local time. On Aug 16, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavourable weather conditions in Mumbai. Thereafter, the aircraft carried out another approach and landed safely, said the spokesperson. There were over 200 passengers on the aircraft when the incident occurred. No human injuries were reported, though the aircraft suffered from minor damage.

Forest fire in NW Türkiye prompts evacuation of 5 villages
ISTANBUL, Aug 17, (Xinhua): A forest fire that erupted Saturday at around 4:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT) in Türkiye's northwestern province of Canakkale has forced the evacuation of five villages, authorities said. Canakkale Governor Omer Toraman said on social media platform X that 11 planes and 10 helicopters, along with ground crews, have been deployed to battle the blaze. The villages were evacuated as a precaution, as the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, Toraman said. According to weather reports, winds in the region are blowing at around 50 km per hour. Meanwhile, Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said on X that efforts are continuing "with full force and without interruption" to bring the blaze under control as soon as possible. Canakkale, along with the northwestern provinces of Kocaeli and Bursa, has battled forest fires in the past month, driven by extreme heat, low humidity, and strong winds. Yumakli said a wildfire erupting on Friday in Kocaeli was brought under control as of Saturday.
