"We will make Himachal plastic-free in 5 years", says CM Sukhu; flags off awareness campaign

India Gazette2 days ago

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), June 5 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday launched a statewide awareness campaign on World Environment Day, pledging to eliminate plastic pollution and make the state plastic-neutral within five years.
Speaking at the event in Shimla, CM Sukhu said, 'We must protect the natural beauty that Himachal has been blessed with. Our target is to gradually wipe out plastic from daily life. Once it becomes a habit, once it becomes part of our nature, plastic will be easily phased out.'
The campaign launch saw the Chief Minister administering an environmental pledge to schoolchildren, municipal workers, cyclists, and government officials, urging collective commitment towards a plastic-free Himachal.
A key feature of the initiative is the pilot Deposit Refund Scheme (DRS), under which consumers will pay an additional Rs5 to Rs10 on plastic or glass products at purchase. This amount will be refunded upon returning the used items at designated collection points, tracked via QR codes on packaging.
CM Sukhu added, 'This is an innovative scheme to build good environmental habits through incentivisation. We are launching it with technology integration.' He added that a full policy detailing plastic collection and recycling under the DRS is being developed and will be implemented in phases.
The awareness groups flagged off included students, government employees, and six cyclists who will travel across districts collecting plastic waste and spreading environmental awareness.
'I extend greetings to all environment lovers on World Environment Day. Himachal is blessed with dense forests in North India. Protecting it is our responsibility. This Deposit Refund Scheme is a step toward that. With planning, policy, and participation, plastic will be wiped out from Himachal,' CM Sukhu said.
Addressing other matters, Sukhu expressed condolences over the recent tragic stampede in Bengaluru during an IPL screening, where 11 people died. 'It's a very sad incident. So many people gathered, and unfortunately, lives were lost. We pray for the injured and the families of the deceased,' he said.
Clarifying reports about Rs10 charges collected at hospitals, the Chief Minister stated that no government directive had been issued. 'Hospitals have been made autonomous. If they are collecting Rs10 for cleanliness or management, it is not under government instruction. They are free to regulate internally, but we have only sought feedback, not enforced any such fee,' he said.
Meanwhile, in Nahan, an 82-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said she had no travel history, and contact tracing is underway. 'We're investigating if the test was accurate or if there was another source of infection. Hospitals are fully prepared to handle any surge,' CM Sukhu assured.
Aditya Negi, one of the cyclists participating in the campaign, said, 'It feels great to be a part of this initiative. Cycling through the hills while picking up waste is our way of showing that even small steps can create big change.'
Lakshita, a student and campaign participant, expressed hope for a cleaner future. 'We want to see Himachal as clean and green as it should be. We will avoid plastic in our daily life and educate others too.'
Environmentalist Pradeep Sangwan, who has worked extensively on plastic waste management in the Himalayan region, endorsed the government's DRS model. He called the campaign a crucial intervention and praised the Department of Environment, Science and Technology for introducing the scheme.
'In Himachal and the Himalayas, both rural and urban regions require integrated solutions for waste management,' Sangwan said. 'The DRS policy is commendable. It sets a formal collection and refund mechanism for every item that enters the state.'
He added, 'In Kedarnath and other parts of Uttarakhand, we're already running similar depository setups. We're collecting 6-7 tonnes of waste daily and recycling it 100 percent. Over 2,000 tonnes of waste has been processed and returned to circulation cleanly.'
Sangwan emphasised local community involvement, stating, 'Locals should guide tourists--this is my street, this is my hill, I must protect it. Carrying 200 grams of waste back isn't hard if they brought it in. We can preserve our beautiful landscapes with small daily actions.'(ANI)

Chopper To Kedarnath Makes Emergency Landing On Highway, Passengers Safe

Kedarnath: A helicopter, with five passengers onboard, made an emergency landing in the middle of a highway on today. The chopper, which was owned by Kestrel Aviation Private Limited, was en route from Rudraprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. The chopper took off at 12:52 pm from the Badasu (Sersi) helipad and landed immediately at the main road in Guptkashi, Rudraprayag district. It experienced a technical snag during take-off, with the collective control getting stuck. The pilot, Captain RPS Sodhi, landed the chopper on the highway adjacent to the helipad to avoid any mishaps. In the video, released by news agency ANI on X (formerly known as Twitter), we can see the helicopter parked in the middle of a road with locals rushing towards the site. A car was damaged in the incident. The pilot sustained minor injuries during the emergency landing and was taken to the hospital, district tourism development officer Rahul Chaubey said. All passengers are safe and unharmed, Mr Chaubey added. Speaking to ANI, Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority said that the rest of the shuttle services are proceeding as normal. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DCGA) has been informed about the matter, UCADA added. According to the DGCA, Kestrel Aviation's AW119 (Reg. VT-RNK) helicopter made a hard landing on the road. 'A team from DAS(NR) is being sent for onsite assessment,' the agency said. This is the latest in a string of helicopter-related incidents reported on the Chardham Yatra route in the past month. A few weeks earlier, an air ambulance helicopter made an emergency landing in Kedarnath due to a technical snag. The chopper reportedly suffered a malfunction in its tail rotor, leading to difficulties in landing. The ambulance had come to Kedarnath to rescue a pilgrim who was reportedly suffering from respiratory distress. The 'Sanjeevani' helicopter ambulance was operated by the Rishikesh branch of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), as reported by news agency PTI. Two doctors and the pilot inside the craft were safe, district tourism development officer Rahul Chaubey said. On May 8, six people, including a pilot, died after their helicopter crash near Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi. The chopper was flying from Dehradun to Harsil helipad. Five of the people who lost their lives were female tourists- Kala Soni (61), Vijaya Reddy (57), Ruchi Aggarwal (56), Radha Aggarwal (79) and Vedavati Kumari (48).

Women's police station gets a new look in just 69 days

Doddaballapur: Once functioning out of a cramped police quarters building originally meant for a single family, the women's police station of Bengaluru Rural district has now un-dergone a remarkable transformation. In just 69 days, the station has been fully renovated and was officially inaugurated on Thursday. Located within the premises of the Doddaballapur rural police station, the women's police station was previously operating out of a small residential unit — a setup that significantly affected police operations. There was limited space for receiving com-plaints, conducting counselling sessions, and interrogating suspects, which ham-pered the station's efficiency. The transformation began after Inspector M.B. Naveen Kumar took charge on March 13. With a vision to improve the work environment and public service, he initiated the renovation work by March 29. He was supported by police personnel Lokesh, Hev, and Sunil Godrale. The project was made possible through CSR funds and contributions from donors, resulting in a completely renovated station within just over two months. Remarkably, a legal aid and counselling centre was also estab-lished within just 7 days. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bengaluru Rural SP C.K. Baba inau-gurated the newly renovated station. Speaking to the media, he praised Inspector Naveen Kumar and his team for their dedication and efficient execution of the ren-ovation. 'They have not only renovated the station but also set up a special legal support centre. I extend my congratulations to them,' he said. SP Baba further shared plans for additional facilities to better serve the public, in-cluding setting up a library and a dedicated playroom for children visiting the station with their families.
