In first big rally, Delhi Congress to protest slum demolitions today; Rahul Gandhi may drop in
Sources suggested Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, may make an appearance at the protest. Gandhi, in Delhi for the Parliament's Monsoon session, has in the past dropped in unannounced at local party protests in the city.
'His appearance tomorrow would not be out of character… there is a huge possibility he might show up,' a Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office (DPCC) functionary said.
The demonstration is set to begin at the Sushruta Trauma Centre near Chandgi Ram Akhara and proceed to the Delhi Assembly, where the Monsoon session begins Monday.
Since the BJP came to power in the Capital, the Congress's Delhi unit has claimed that over 3,000 jhuggi-jhopri dwellings have been razed, displacing nearly 15,000 families.
Last month, Gandhi visited the Ashok Vihar slum cluster in Jailorwala Bagh, where hundreds of homes were demolished in June as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive. Videos shared by the Congress on social media showed Gandhi walking through the debris, speaking to residents who said they were left homeless.
In addition to demolitions, Congress leaders claimed the protest will highlight 'broader grievances' — law and order, drug proliferation, and unfulfilled BJP poll promises like the monthly stipend of Rs 2,500 for women and its promise to end the perennial monsoon water-logging woes in the city.
This protest comes at a significant moment for the Delhi Congress — after nearly a decade of marginalisation following the fall of the Sheila Dikshit-led government, the party has been attempting to regain the ground it lost to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Slum dwellers, who once were the backbone of the Congress's vote bank, had shifted to AAP after the Anna Andolan.
On Sunday, ahead of its protest, the party released a video compilation on its social media platforms, juxtaposing two statements made by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The first, from May, features Gupta assuring the media that slums in Delhi would not be demolished. The second clip is from her response to Gandhi's recent visit to the Ashok Vihar demolition site, where she remarked that the Chief Minister 'cannot protect illegal colonies'.
Posting the video, the Delhi Congress captioned it: 'How can we trust her promises now?'.
Several Congress MPs also raised the issue of demolitions in Delhi in Parliament.

Let Election Commission itself submit an affidavit, says Ashok Gehlot
Questioning the neutrality of the Election Commission, veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Friday (August 8, 2025) asked the poll body to itself submit an affidavit stating that there were no irregularities in the elections. The Election Commission had demanded an affidavit under oath from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi about his allegation of electoral fraud. Mr. Gehlot said at a press conference in Jaipur that the Election Commission had made an 'absurd demand' despite knowing the fact that Mr. Gandhi was working under an oath to uphold the Constitution which inherently included strengthening the constitutional institutions. 'Instead of making such a ridiculous demand, the EC should have initiated a fair investigation,' he said. The former Rajasthan Chief Minister accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of damaging all democratic institutions, while affirming that the Election Commission, once respected globally for its credibility, was being looked at with suspicion. 'Democracy cannot survive in the country when the EC colludes with the ruling party,' Mr. Gehlot said. Mr. Gehlot said the statements of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha about electoral fraud in Maharashtra and Karnataka were 'absolutely correct' and in the interest of the nation. Mr. Gandhi's presentation had proved that a dangerous game was being played in the country, he said, adding that threats were being issued to the Congress leader instead of addressing the issue. While the Election Commission was depicting a 'clear bias' against the Opposition leaders after changes in its appointment procedure, the BJP's manipulation of election results through 'rigging and money power' and its acts to undermine institutions for political advantage had posed a major threat to the nation's democracy, Mr. Gehlot said.

1.36L houses constructed under PMAY-U in 10 years: Data
1 2 Bhubaneswar: State govt has completed the construction of 1.36 lakh houses for the urban poor under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) under 115 urban local bodies in the past 10 years since 2015, according to data provided by the Odisha Urban Housing Mission (OUHM). According to data, a total of 1.84 lakh houses were sanctioned for the state under PMAY-U, out of which 1.62 lakh have been grounded so far, with Odisha completing 73% of its target. Housing data is required for preparation of the Odisha Economic Survey Report 2025-26. In terms of scheme components, a highest of 1.31 lakh houses were completed under beneficiary-led construction, while 3,650 were completed under the affordable housing project component, and 1,520 units were completed under the in-situ slum redevelopment component. "Financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh is provided to beneficiaries for the construction of new all-weather pucca houses. It has a provision of basic amenities such as water supply, toilets, electricity and sanitation. Assistance is provided for the construction of houses within 21-30 sqm," read the letter. So far, Rs 2,976.70 crore was disbursed under the beneficiary-led construction vertical, while Rs 39.55 crore was given as incentive for the early completion of houses. Under this component, beneficiaries were provided with grants for reconstructing their own houses. For affordable houses, the beneficiaries are identified through a transparent process, which is based on their annual income, and allotments are made accordingly. The beneficiaries make an individual contribution of Rs 1.5 lakh each, while the rest is provided by the govt. The in-situ slum redevelopment project involves shifting beneficiaries living in slums in urban areas to a transit house while the govt completes the construction of pucca houses for them at an identified site. "PMAY is indeed a game-changer, especially for the urban poor. People living in slums in cities are deprived of basic needs. A house is always a dream for them. The scheme helps realise this legitimate dream," social worker Alok Kar said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
