ChatGPT's new ‘agent' tool can be tricked by bad actors: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman cautions: ‘Cutting-edge' but 'experimental'

Time of India4 days ago
In the fast-unfolding world of artificial intelligence, OpenAI's latest innovation, the
ChatGPT Agent
, promises to redefine how humans collaborate with machines. But as CEO Sam Altman put it in his candid new post on X (formerly Twitter), this powerful assistant is as much a peek into the future as it is a reminder to tread carefully.
Described as a leap forward in AI utility, the ChatGPT Agent is more than your average chatbot. It can manage complex, multi-step tasks using its own virtual computer, functioning almost like a digital executive assistant. Want to book travel, buy a wedding outfit, and select a gift for a friend—all without switching tabs? Agent can handle that. Want a report prepared based on your data and transformed into a presentation? It can do that too.

'It can think for a long time, use some tools, think some more, take some actions, think some more,' Altman explained, emphasizing the tool's advanced reasoning abilities and continuous decision-making.
It's a blend of Deep Research and OpenAI's Operator models, but dialed up to full strength.

Altman's Clear Warning: "Treat It as Experimental"
But despite the allure, Altman is openly cautious about how users should approach the Agent. In his words: 'I would explain this to my own family as cutting edge and experimental… not something I'd yet use for high-stakes uses or with a lot of personal information.'

His tone is both enthusiastic and sober—encouraging users to try the tool, but with heavy warnings.
Altman's honesty isn't new. He's previously called out ChatGPT's own shortcomings, from hallucinations to sycophantic responses. With Agent, he takes that transparency a step further. While OpenAI has built more robust safeguards than ever—ranging from enhanced training to user-level controls—he admits that they 'can't anticipate everything.'
What Could Go Wrong?
Agent's ability to carry out tasks autonomously means it can also make decisions that come with real-world consequences—especially if given too much access. For instance, Altman suggests that giving Agent access to your email and instructing it to 'take care of things' without follow-up questions could end poorly. It might click on phishing links or fall for scams a human would recognize instantly.
He recommends granting Agent only the minimum access needed. Want it to book a group dinner? Give it access to your calendar. Want it to order clothes? No access is needed. The key is intentional use.

The risk isn't just technical—it's societal. 'Society, the technology, and the risk mitigation strategy will need to co-evolve,' Altman noted in his post. It's a rare moment of foresight in a space too often dominated by hype.

20L formal job additions reported in May; surge spans gender, sectors & regions: EPFO

EPFO India's organised sector witnessed its strongest monthly expansion to date in May, with Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) reporting net payroll additions of over 20 lakh, the highest since formal tracking began in April 2018, provisional data from labour ministry showed on Monday. The surge spans gender, sectors and regions, underscoring steady formalisation of the workforce. Union labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya described the milestone as "a testament to the growing strength of India's formal employment landscape". He credited it to "the direct result of PM Narendra Modi's visionary leadership and govt's unwavering commitment to pro-youth, pro-worker reforms", adding that "ease of doing business and economic empowerment is yielding tangible outcomes for a Viksit Bharat". Women's participation in the formal workforce also saw strides, with net female payroll additions reaching 4,25,000, marking a 7.5% increase over April and a 15% year-on-year rise. First-time formal job entrants numbered 9,42,000, up from 8,49,000 in April, driven largely by youth - workers aged 18-25 - who accounted for 8,73,000 net additions amid a 15.1% month-on-month rise. Job-switchers who transferred their EPFO accounts without withdrawing funds totalled 16 lakh in May, rising 2.1% from April and 14.3% from last year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo The ministry noted that such behaviour "safeguards long-term financial well being and extends their social security protection". Sector-wise, manpower suppliers led with around 4,63,000 hires, followed by expert services at 1,38,000. Industries spanning textiles, garments, security, contracting, engineering, cleaning and finance contributed significantly, collectively supporting the surge. Regionally, Maharashtra led the pack by contributing 20.3% of net additions, with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana each delivering over 5%. Together, the top five states and UTs accounted for nearly 60% of national payroll growth. May's historic payroll figures reflect more than seasonal hiring - it signals an evolving economic structure where formal employment, especially among youth and women, is gaining traction. The sharp rise in first-time entrants and account portability suggests enhanced job confidence and workforce fluidity. Still, sustaining this momentum hinges on ensuring the longevity and quality of these emerging formal jobs, requiring stronger skill development and social protection frameworks to translate job numbers into secure, resilient livelihoods across the economy. Tariff deadline Aug 1, US team to visit India in 2nd half of month

File photo NEW DELHI: Even as the Aug 1 deadline set by Trump looms, a team of US negotiators will visit India only in the second half of Aug with top officials indicating that India is looking at a bilateral trade agreement by Fall. The govt has not commented on the last week's talks in Washington, but by all indications, negotiators have failed to make much headway on the contentious issue of allowing American agriculture and dairy products, which have been clearly marked as no-go areas by India. Besides, India has been demanding that it should get a good deal in areas of interests such as textiles, footwear, certain auto parts and shrimps and is unwilling to settle for sub-optimal solutions. The US has been insisting on concessions for agricultural products such as maize and soybean, most of which is genetically modified, something that India does not allow. In recent days, Trump has claimed that a deal with India will be finalised soon. Although it is unclear if talks for a deal before Aug 1 deadline will take place virtually, it remains to be seen how the American president responds, given that he has been sending tariff letters to countries which have not signed agreements so far. In fact, the transparency in the deals being signed by Trump is another concern with govt, given that the US has finalised deals with Vietnam and Bangladesh, where the non-disclosure clauses are preventing them from being made public while the American president claims victory. On April 2, Trump had announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian products, only to suspend it till July 9 and announced Aug 1 as the new date for the higher levies to kick in. For India too, the stakes are high, given that the US is its largest export market. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
